Salary cap expected to be about $130 million (merge)

Sources tell ESPN's Adam Schefter that the NFL is projected to raise its 2014 salary cap to $130 million.

Many observers thought the cap would be around $126 million. Instead, it's a massive five percent increase off last year's $123 million and gives teams a little more breathing room. According to Overthecap.com, the five teams with the least amount of cap space right now are the Cowboys, Steelers, Seahawks, Chargers and Rams. The Raiders, Jaguars, Browns, Colts and Dolphins have the most space.

Good to know. Gives us a little more flexibility, a long with everyone else.

Shows that spending doesn't necessarily mean winning with the Cowboys, Steelers, and Rams all missing the playoffs and the Chargers almost missing.  Also pretty awesome that the Colts are the only team out of the bottom 5 to make the playoffs.  Going to be very interesting to see what the Seahawks do in the next few years once their mid round draft pick starts cash in.

They've got tough decisions to make right now. They're right up against the 2014 cap, they have a number of FAs that played significant roles in their Super Bowl run, and they need to maintain some flexibility in future years so they can re-sign Russell Wilson, Earl Thomas, and their other young playmakers.

They will cut a couple of players like Miller and Rice who would save them roughly 5 and 7 million a piece and I predict they cut Clemmons too that would save another 7.5 million if they can bring back Bennett. I also believe they will trade back out of the first rd to limit the salary of incoming rookies and rely on those great scouts in later rds. The cap relief will really help them to hold onto some of their guys like Bennett and Tate. As you can see those 3 moves alone save them almost 20 million...and all of those guys are rotational/cogs. They are just so deep on defense that their rotations wont be a strong but I would still put them the favorites going into 2014. There is a couple guys though like Chancelor, Wilson, and Sherman that will end up breaking up this team when they are due. They will end up making some tough decisions like the Pats had to do when they had lot let go of Meloy, Law, Mcginnist etc. The great thing is Wilson has shown he doesn't need elite receivers and should only be more deadly and having a full season of Harvin will help that offense be more explosive like we saw in the SB. Seattle isn't going anywhere. Its funny with all the small late rd contracts for starters the fat contracts belong to guys that are solid players but not stars..and they will be shed to fit their elite players in. IMO...the core team of Wilson, Sherman, Chancelor, Smith, and Thomas will all stay and they will rebuild around them as they go.

The fan of the poor team hopes that the free agency period will allow their team to rise and the fan of the Super Bowl team hopes that they can avoid losses and improve enough to remain on top. I always enjoy the off season stuff. Everyone can be hopeful to some degree.

Heck, this does allow teams that have their franchise QB on a rookie contract to compete better, IMO.

Brady, Rodgers, Big Ben, Flacco, and now Russell Wilson all won their first SB before their first mega contract. I don't think it is a co-incidence. That is why the 49ers and Colts have the best chance to make noise if they play the offseason right.

I don't think that is material at all.  They just happened to lead a better team than the one they were playing in the Super Bowl at that time.

I was just talking yearly salary. Mack getting $10MM a year makes him the 2nd highest paid center in the league on an annualy basis, not double the next guy.

I was going by base salary according to the statistics listed on the site.  I didnt know what you were meaning by how his structured contract would look like.

Not really, cause then that is less than mack at only $8.1M a year. My point was Mack wanting $10+M a year is ridiculous

It's not twice as much as the next highest paid center. Not even close.

I agree that $10m/year for a center is too much. I wouldn't want to pay the $8m that Kalil is getting. But the word is that Mack will be the highest paid center in the league. I don't know about $10m, but $8m+ is likely.

    • Titans will end up in the Cellar, sorry Paul you are wrong and a hater. If you read this, I will bet you a steak dinner the Colts end up with a better record than the Titans! AR is better than Bo Callahan and Taylor is far better than any weapon the Titans have. Paul is just jealous because since the AFC South was created, we have been to 4 AFC Title Games = 2003, 2006, 2009, 2014/2 SB's = 2006, 2009/Won a SB = 2006. By the way C.J. Stroud is talking smack as well, he better remember that the Colts were dominating his team and him in the 1st meeting when AR was healthy. We were up 14-0 at Houston before AR went out. The Texans were a sweet story last year, barely beating us with a backup QB to win the division but guess what, they did their usual losing early in the playoffs. They have 0 AFC Title Game appearances in their 22 seasons of existence, YES, A BIG FAT 0.    When it comes to Jacksonville I can only laugh. It seems like they have picked in the top 5 for the last 20 seasons and have nothing to show for it except 1 AFC Title Game appearance.    Going by history, Colts still are the best team in the AFC South since its invention. Facts hurt! The others have some catching up to do and we haven't been dominant since 2014. We have spotted these other teams 10 seasons, and they still haven't made a SB or win 1.   Since the AFC South was created (2002), Division Championships: Colts 9 Texans 7 Titans 4 Jags 2
    • Sometimes opinions really are like …..   Not only does everyone have them, but some stink more than others.
    • Reds are only 2 games behind the Cubs. The whole division is bunched up, beating each other.
    • Paul Kuharsky, who covers the Titans and has become a homer for them, was on the radio today saying he expects the Colts to be bad and possibly a top 5 drafting team. I think he just hates Richardson and thinks the roster is average at best. Funny that he thinks higher of the Titans roster as he has them doing better next year. Shows how much Titans fans and even media are delusional with their own team and outwardly as well with the Colts.
