On this list in FA ( assuming they do become FA's), we get:

Offense: Wallace or Bowe at WR, Blount as a FB

Defense: Resign Freeney, get Manny Lawson

Although we won't get that many people on FA, we will be quite busy in the draft. with a 7-9 record, we will have the 14th pick. we trade down to the 19th pick and pick up 2nd round pick. with the 19th pick select: barrett Jones.with the 2nd round pick we get Eric Fisher OT from Central Michgan (6"8). with the 3rd and 4th round pick, we would get Margus Hunt( DE from SMU) or Robert Lester (SS from Alabama.)

What do you think?

Zero chance we end up with any of them, and Freeney is only here now to placate the fans. Zero chance to pick up a second round pick your way.

We do need to get a speedy safety. I sure hope we don`t win 7 games.

Not a fan of resigning Freeney or signing Manny Lawson. We are pretty well set at LB even without Freeney. Hughes and Addison will hopefully continue to progress, and if they dont, a YOUNG pass rushing LB is needed through the draft, not a vet.

If we are to trade down and get OL help, Id rather get OG Chance Warmack since he is a beast. 2nd round I want to go defense in getting SS Kenny Vacarro from Texas, and 3rd we could target a RT like Alex Hurst from LSU.

Nothing improbable about your first round scenario, including Barrett Jones, other than getting a 2nd rounder in the trade - no chance of that. Easily can get a 3rd though, and still a good scenario.

I'm in the minority, but very much favor re-signing Freeney as well, and believe there is a plausible scenario in the works for him to finish his career as a Colt (that isn't the goal, but may be the end result). The Colts won't offer him market value for a HOF 4-3 DE, that wouldn't make sense here, but they very well may offer him a new 3 yr. deal as a pass rush specialist, rather than an every down player. I don't think he'll take it, and franchising is not an option, so he'll likely hit the open market. However, I don't think we'll see him command a $10 million per year contract in the open market. If the market viewed him as such as a 33 yr. old, he'd have probably been signed and traded by now. Thus, there is some chance that he'll accept the 6-8 million per year we are willing to offer instead of a similar # with a new team - and he'll get to spend nearly all of his time in the role that he is most familiar anyway. The only catch here is that players of his magnitude don't often accept what they perceive as a demotion - thought it really just means a little more rest.

As for Wallace and Bowe. I don't see a play for them here, even though we have the money. If we exit the season with Reggie Wayne as our only consistent producer at WR, then I may change my tune. I don't think that either of those receivers offer the performance delta relative to their market value. I'd rather have a Pierre Garcon than them, personally, because the QB makes the receiver more than the other way around....just look at the Colts, Patriots and Saints of recent years.

Let say we finish with a top 5-6 pick, you think its possible to trade down to say pick 20-22 and pick up a 2nd rounder in the process?

The Rams got a second in '12 for trading from 6 to 14, and the Cowboys thought it was a steal. Just don't fall into the trap of thinking that 8 spots in the first round = a second round pick. Look at the other trades that were made also.

Today: 1,3,4

+ conditional 6th (Davis) probably gone

+ compensatory 4th or 5th likely added for Garcon

Didn't we also trade a conditional 7th along with Thomas for Fokou and Lloyd. Lloyd didn't make the team, Fokou did. Dunno if we have a shot of getting that back or not. I wish we knew the conditions of these conditional picks.

Don't remember if that one was conditional or not, and certainly don't know what the conditions were. All we really know as fans is that we have 3 picks of consequence in the up coming draft with a good shot at a decent compensatory pick for Garcon. I'd give up Thomas and a 7th all day long for Fokou by himself....based on results so far - even though there is a chance we won't re-sign him. It reinforces how easy it can be to find solid support players even without late round picks.

We also lost without him, and next week we will lose if he plays or not. Your hate for Freeney is ridiculous. He still opens up the OL for other players. We lost a SB because we didn't have him.

Well... Dallas jumped from roughly 14 to 6 to take Claiborne and that cost them a #2.

So, I'd say willing to go from 6 to 20 will get a #2 and likely more. I'd prefer not to fall that far if it can be avoided, UNLESS we think there's going to be a player we LOVE who falls that far. But then, it's risky business. It only takes one other team to love that player as much as you do and if trade down too far you run the risk of losing the player you love.

When trading down you have to be willing to accept the player you have rated at that very pick. So, if you trade down to 20, you have to be happy if the draft breaks so that you get your 20th rated player. By the way, that's rarely how it works. Teams have different looking draft boards and the player they take is often rated somewhat higher than the pick they use to select him.

Hope that makes sense....

EDIT: I now see several others have made the point about the Cowboys trading up and paying a #2 to do so. But it was the ONLY first round trade made on the day of the draft where a team paid that price.

All the other first round trades on the day of the draft were for a #3 or a #4. There may have been other additional picks as well.

We will most likely lose Freeney to free agency. I'd prefer to look at a premium pass rusher in the 1st round rather than O line. I like the sound any of both Jarvis Jones from Georgia and Sam Montgomery from LSU. There is plenty of O line talent to be had in free agency and I trust Grigson to find it.
