Mini Camp Day 3

Per Phillip Wilson and George Bremer -

Working primarily in the red zone, Andrew Luck was 23-for-39 and threw five straight TDs in one stretch.

Luck took nearly all the reps today, with both he and Arians saying he needs the practice time to catch up.

Former Purdue DB Brandon King was among the defensive standouts. He dropped a potential interception and broke up another end zone pass.

LB AJ Edds, a Greenwood native, also played well with a couple of pass breakups.

The star of the day, however, was rookie TE Coby Fleener. He made a great adjustment for a back shoulder catch in the corner for a TD.

Fleener's best play was a leaping grab just past the outstretched hands of LB Justin Hickman.

WRs Donnie Avery and Reggie Wayne also stood out today, with Avery in particular making a nice TD grab in the corner.

Robert Mathis also made his best defensive play of the minicamp, leaping to bat down a pass at the line of scrimmage.

There was a hold-your-breath moment when Wayne got tangled with a defender coming off the line of scrimmage. Both players fell in a heap.

Wayne took a few minutes to get up, stretching out his legs, and then took a couple of plays off before returning for the rest of practice.

Aside from squeezing a pass into Fleener past Hickman, Luck also rifled a pass through 2 DBs to Avery for a TD.

Austin Collie also made a nice catch on a throw just over a DB's shoulder. Luck threw 10 TDs in goal-line and red-zone play.

Other notes: S Tom Zbikowski joined the punt return rotation, and RB Darren Evans wore a boot on his right foot.

Wilson:

Andrew Luck says he still had too many INC passes today, but concedes it's a learning process.

Andrew Luck took about 95 percent of reps today in final minicamp practice. Coach says plan is to speed up learning curve.

Andrew Luck's best throw today was perfect sideline pass, just over LB, TE Coby Fleener made a great diving catch for TD.

Luck did struggle early in 11-on-11, completing 2-of-7 passes. Got better as day went on. #Colts rookie concedes it's a learning process.

QB Luck: "It's definitely nice to complete passes in the red zone, maybe a little too many incompletions for my liking ..."

On getting most of snaps today, #Colts QB said, "I need the catch-up time."

Star colleague Mike Chappell says #Colts QB was 23-of-39 in 7-on-7, 11-on-11 simulations, 10 TDs in red-zone/goal-line situations.

RB Delone Carter says he hurt his right thumb on one of first plays of OTAs, during bag drill. Showed off scar from surgery.

Carter says he's about 80-85 percent now, will be back ready to go for #Colts training camp when players report July 28th.

Andrew Luck is now set to spend the next two weeks working closely with Clyde Christensen and Bruce Arians.

I like hearing about the O and all but I really like to hear about a defensive player making a nice play on the ball. Sounds like Mathis is converting just fine. I am also hearing that Powers is making some nice plays.

I'd like to hear about some of that too, don't worry, I didn't filter it out and only post O stuff, I just re-posted everything they said. Obviously Luck is, and should be, the biggest story but we could do with hearing about the other side of the ball too! Freeney claims to have made an INT in one of the pre-Luck OTAs, which is good I guess?

Oh I'm not saying you left anything out. I was just stating that I'd like a few more reports by them on how the D is playing coverage.

I follow all of those guys too so I was reading it as they were tweeting it.

Thanks for putting it all together for us.

Dan...... great job.... thanks so much for providing so much info. And, I think today's practice is what you referenced in another thread when you said 'today'.... I had no idea practice had already come and gone....

Guess I had better get used to the fact that you folks really are 3 hours ahead of me! Yikes!!!

Thanks again...

Did not see Powers today but yesterday he was excellent in man to man coverage. Maybe he deserves to be our new spokesman...lol Guess we will see come September.

I don't know if this is why he wasn't there today but he tweeted that he was moving today.

Arians has commented on Luck's incompletions saying he's not worried about it. He threw plays that Luck wasn't very familiar with in today, and timing is still developing, obviously, because this was only the third day together, and as Luck's game relies on timing it's no worry that he's not getting perfect practices, and the timing will come.

I think the important things to remember about Luck right now are :

1. He's not Peyton (no duh lol)

2. This is really only his sixth work out with the team (3 day rookie mini camp right after the draft) so I wouldn't worry too much about all the incompletes. He's behind and I am sure he'll catch up and as he does those will go down. Not that anyone is freaking out over him yet.

Glad to hear that Andrew is perfecting the fade... it was my biggest RZ concern... Every source I've seen says that Avery is back up to full speed, also, but that Collie has been lining up on the outside... So many unanswer(ed)(able) questions....

yea that surprised me too that collie is playing outside. my guess the colts dont want him taking those big hits slot wrs take going over the middle

I figure they'll both see time in the slot and lining up outside. That's what we've been doing with our WR's for at least a few years now, and it makes it tougher for a defense to match up consistently. It's the same logic behind why it's harder to defend a legit 3-down RB than it is a 2 down back and a 3rd down specialist- you have to tip your hand because your personnel isn't versatile enough to keep them on edge. If a defense knows exactly who's lining up where every play, it's much easier for that defense to make the correct adjustments.

The distinction between slot WR/outside WR is usually one the fan or media focuses on moreso than coaches. There may be some guys who are pure slot WR's and pure outside WR's, but a well rounded player should be able to be effective lining up in both situations. Even the poster child for slot WR's, Welker, has done a good deal of damage over the course of his career when he's lined up outside.

Dan...just want to say a very nice report on the minicamp. One thing I saw is that Justin Hickman was doing a great job in coverage. As we know he was a standout in the CFL. In fact Hick had been "all over" Fleener on that great catch and got turned around. Keep up the great reports!!!

    • Don’t know if it really says a lot about anything? I mean he’s neck and neck with Veach who’s won 3 Super Bowls in 7 seasons. Also, I’m not sure Veach should be credited with Mahomes - it was Dorsey who drafted him.    I do think a lack of star power has been a trademark of the Ballard era though.
    • I ran across this analysis on Reddit showing Ballard having the second-lowest rate per year of drafting Pro Bowl players among NFL GMs with a tenure of at least five years. I was kind of surprised by it, but it fits the narrative of him putting together a solid team, but one that's mostly lacking in superstars. I hope this improves with the results of our promising 2023 and 2024 drafts.      The GMs Chris Ballard, Colts (7 seasons) All-Pros drafted: Quenton Nelson, Shaq Leonard, Jonathan Taylor (3) All-Pros per season: 0.4   Eric DeCosta, Ravens (5 seasons) All-Pros drafted: Justin Madubuike, Patrick Queen, Devin Duvernay, Kyle Hamilton (4) All-Pros per season: 0.8   Jon Robinson, Former Titans (7 seasons) All-Pros drafted: Jack Conklin, Derrick Henry, Kevin Byard, Jeffery Simmons, AJ Brown (5) All-Pros per season: 0.7   Brian Gutenkunst, Packers (7 seasons) All-Pros drafted: Jaire Alexander (1) All-Pros per season: 0.1   Brett Veach, Chiefs (7 seasons) All-Pros drafted: Patrick Mahomes (thank you u/darcys_beard), Mecole Hardman, Creed Humphrey, Trent McDuffie (3) All-Pros per season: 0.4   Brandon Beane, Bills (7 seasons) All-Pros drafted: Tre White, Matt Milano, Josh Allen, Wyatt Teller, Taron Johnson (5) All-Pros per season: 0.7   Jon Lynch, 49ers (7 seasons) All-Pros drafted: George Kittle, Fred Warner, Nick Bosa, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Talanoa Hufanga (6) All-Pros per season: 0.9   Chris Grier, Dolphins (8 seasons) All-Pros drafted: Xavien Howard, Jakeem Grant, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Jason Sanders (4) All-Pros per season: 0.5   Jason Licht, Buccaneers (10 seasons) All-Pros drafted: Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Devin White, Tristan Wirfs, Antoine Winfield Jr (5) All-Pros per season: 0.5   Les Snead, Rams (12 seasons) All-Pros drafted: Janoris Jenkins, Greg Zuerlein, Alec Ogletree, Aaron Donald, Todd Gurley, Pharoh Cooper, Cooper Kupp, Kyren Williams, Puka Nacua (9) All-Pros per season: 0.8   Howie Roseman, Eagles (14 seasons) All-Pros drafted: Brandon Graham, Jason Kelce, Fletcher Cox, Lane Johnson, Jordan Poyer, Carson Wentz, Jalen Hurts (7) All-Pros per season: 0.5   John Schneider, Seahawks (14 seasons) All-Pros drafted: Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, Richard Sherman, Bobby Wagner, Russell Wilson, Tyler Lockett, Michael Dickson, DK Metcalf (8) All-Pros per season: 0.6   Stephen Jones, Cowboys de facto (14 seasons) All-Pros drafted: Sean Lee, Dez Bryant, Tyron Smith, DeMarco Murray, Travis Frederick, Zack Martin, DeMarcus Lawrence, Byron Jones, Ezekiel Elliott, Dak Prescott, Leighton Vander Esch, Cee Dee Lamb, Trevon Diggs, Micah Parsons, DaRon Bland, Tyler Smith (16) All-Pros per season: 1.1   Kevin Colbert, Former Steelers (22 seasons) All-Pros drafted: Antwaan Randle-El, Troy Polamalu, Lawrence Timmons, LaMarr Woodley, Maurkice Pouncey, Antonio Brown, Cam Heyward, David DeCastro, Le'Veon Bell, TJ Watt, Diontae Johnson (11) All-Pros per season: 0.5   Mickey Loomis, Saints (22 seasons) All-Pros drafted: Jamaal Brown, Reggie Bush, Jahri Evans, Carl Nicks, Malcolm Jenkins, Thomas Morstead, Jimmy Graham, Cam Jordan, Terron Armstead, Michael Thomas, Alvin Kamara, Ryan Ramczyk, Trey Hendrickson (13) All-Pros per season: 0.6   Bill Belichick, Former Patriots (24 seasons) All-Pros drafted: Tom Brady, Richard Seymour, Asante Samuel, Dan Koppen, Vince Wilfork, Logan Mankins, Stephen Gostkowski, Matt Light, Jerod Mayo, Matthew Slater, Sebastian Vollmer, Devin McCourty, Rob Gronkowski, Marcus Cannon, Chandler Jones, Dont'a Hightower, Jamie Collins, Nate Ebner, Joe Thuney, Jake Bailey, Marcus Jones (21) All-Pros per season: 0.9
