Our LBs started strong in the year, then cooled down a bit.

Blackmon has been on the ascend. Loving it from him.

Kelly and Raimann have been doing very good to exceptional, never thought I'd say Big Q is the weaker of the left 3 (must be the year everyone being paid $20 mil. decides to have a downturn, j/k :)). Our starting OT and C play has trumped our starting OG play till date.

Top 10

Improvement from prior week

Decline from prior week

Bottom 10

Offense:

QB:

Minshew - 44.3(NR), 71.6(16/33), 58.4(29/33), 58.4(29/34), 62.9(27/33), 52.3(30/33), 48.3(34/35), 50.9(34/36), 51(33/36), 56.6(32/38)

Ehlinger - *(inactive first 10 games)

Richardson - 49.3(27/32), 55.3(29/33), 55.3(30/33), 53.9(31/34), 52.2(31/33), 52.2(34/38) *IR

Will break down by groups:

Minshew got a great grade. Crazy to think, even so, he still ranks in the bottom 5 QBs(that qualify for grades)

Minshew has improved grade each of the last 3 weeks. Amazing what happens when you cut TOs down.

RB:

Moss - (NA), 63.6(30/51), 62.3(33/54), 62.1(35/51), 66.6(29/53), 66.6(31/55), 65.9(34/50), 68.1(31/53), 68.2(34/58), 67.7(39/59)

Funk - 63.5(NR), *(inactive weeks 2-10)

Hull - 65.7(NR) * IR

Taylor clearly has taken over the lead back roll with Moss only receiving 1 touch.

Taylor dropped 10 spots in ranking after 3ypc game this week.

Winfree - 54.1(NR), *(inactive week 2-7), 52.9(NR), 52.6(NR), 52.8(NR)

All our WRs grades went up this week.

Pittman at a high point on the season at the #41 spot.

Downs continues to impress, up to the #34 spot this week.

Wish Pierce would get a few more targets

McKenzie would probably rank in the 60-70 rank if he qualified, has to be close I would think.

Woods - * IR(first 10 games)

Ogletree has been grading out in the top 10 for the last 7 weeks. Need to get him even more involved, once back from injury. Missed this week.

Mo has been declining last couple weeks after being graded out around top 20 for a few weeks.

Probably would like to see more Mallory over Granson.

I think Woods is probably good to go, rough roster decision to make.

So the OL as a whole.

Wow.

#2 Center + (2) top 10 Tackles

(2) top 31 Guards as well

#62 Tackle too

What can be said?

Raimann is just a beast

Smith is as well, happy he is back

Freeland got some irreplaceable experience and I expect his development to show come next season.

French is 2nd worst graded Center

Do the DL as a whole as well.

Will be great to get Grover back in a couple weeks. DT is thin, no doubt. Only good thing with our roster build is, Dayo and Lewis can both slide inside if need be.

Ebukam has just quietly been grading out around top 20 all year.

Paye has had 4 straight weeks of grade improvement

Lewis grading out at #45 is nice as well, great story of battling through adversity

Johnson has almost hit rock bottom.

Bryan...ehhh.

Adebawore is just in developmental year.

Stuart - (NA), 60(NR), 56.7(NR), 56.7(NR), 30.1(NR), *(inactive week 6-10)

Speed has taken over as top rated LB currently.

Not much to say here. Franklin and Shaq grading out in bottom quarter of the league. Need to step their games up.

Stuart should never see the defensive side of the ball for us, Olubi is ok though, sparingly.

Flowers - 53.6(69/92), 59.6(60/98),  65.5(42/105), 66.4(45/109) * IR

First off let me say I am happy for Baker, for the first time all season, he is not ranked as the worst, or even in the bottom 10 CBs in the league.

Love Jones getting these reps. Has played ok I think.

Kenny has been beasting this year.

Ready to get Brents back.

Denbow - *(inactive week 1-7), 46.3(NR), *(inactive week 9-10)

Blackmon is trying to get paid, little worried about that contract year play, but he has been fantastic.

Thomas, like Baker , has battled his way out of the bottom 10 Safeties with better play over the last 4 weeks.

Cross would probably grade out in the 40-45 range if he qualified. Would like to see more reps.

Gay - worth every penny

Sanchez is grading out bottom 10, but I think he has been punting ok lately.

Am I reading something wrong or did Ogletree get a grade in a game he was not active in ?

Reading it wrong.

Grade just carried over from prior week.

That is still his up to date post week 10 ranking, despite not playing.

Edit: also, mine is not the individual week score. It's the current weeks score for the season total grade.

So week 1 was grade after week 1

Week 2 is season grade after week 2, not for the week 2 game, and so on and so on.

OL is fine.

DL is pretty solid as well once Grover gets back(speaking of shot in the arm)

I'm not going to be posting any grades save maybe just a few on stand-out players.

I'll try to rank grades as follows:

  • Elite 90+
  • Great 80-89
  • Good 70-79
  • Above Average 65-69
  • Average 56-64
  • Below Average 50-55
  • Bad <50

For reference the baseline grade is 60.0 - the average. To make it easier for me I've made some PFF-grade intervals for each of the above categories (see above). Fewer grades under average because once you get into that area under "Below average" there's not much point in grading it - it's just not good enough.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Stand-out performances week 10:

These are premium grades. I'll post links to where they can be found. If you find these PFF grades as interesting as me I highly recommend you subscribe.

Julian Blackmon - Overall 82.5 - 69 total snaps (35 Rdef, 34 Cov) - No penalties. (Defense)

-- Run defense - 58.7

-- Tackling - 81.6 - 1 missed tackle, 6 Tackles, 1 Assist, 3 Stops.

-- Coverage - 82.3 - Gave up 1/4 targets for 9 yards (Y/REC 9.0), 1 INT, 1 Pass breakup.

Great game by Blackmon!

Josh Downs - Overall 82.3 - 14 (13 Rec, 1 Rblk) - No penalties. (Receiving)

-- Receiving - 79.1 - Caught 2/3 targets for 40 yards, ADOT 19.3, YAC/REC 5.0, No missed tackles forced.

-- Drops - 68.3

-- Fumbles - 64.0

-- Run blocking - 60.0

Limited snaps, but he still makes a difference!

Bernhard Raimann - Overall 82.2 - 57 total snaps (26 Rblk, 31 Pblk) - No penalties. (Blocking)

-- Pass blocking - 86.5 - 1 Hurry.

-- Run blocking - 75.7

As usual! Mr. reliable!

Braden Smith - Overall 80.8 - 56 total snaps (25 Rblk, 31 Pblk) - No penalties. (Blocking)

-- Pass blocking - 76.8 - 1 Hurry.

-- Run blocking - 80.1

Smith back with a great performance!

Rodney Thomas - Overall 80.7 - 69 total snaps (35 Rdef, 1 Prsh, 33 Cov) - No penalties. (Defense)

-- Run defense - 36.1

-- Tackling - 29.7 - 1 missed tackle, 2 Tackles.

-- Passrush - 59.4 - No Sacks, Hits or Hurries.

-- Coverage - 89.4 - Gave up 0/0 targets, 1 INT.

Grade carried entirely by his INT.

And now, the biggest surprise of all --- drumroll please ---

Gardner Minshew - Overall 83.9 - 57 total snaps - No penalties. (Passing)

-- Passing - 83.6 - Made 18/28 attempts (64.3% - Adj% 75.0) for 194 yards, YPA 6.9, 1 INT, Big Time Throws 2, No turnover worthy plays, 2 batted passes, 9 dropbacks under pressure (32.14%), Time to throw 3.42.

-- Rushing - 57.1

-- Fumble - 78.1

I... what? I mean... what? How? Why?

Blackmon has had a good season. Settled in nicely at SS. Rodney Thomas' best performances coincide with his INTs. Without them he's below average to bad. Even with few snaps Downs makes a difference! We got two solid tackles on the roster! I don't know why Minshew's here. Seriously, I'm calling this a mistake by PFF...

Comments on grades for Offense, Defense and ST, week 10

(55.2/74.7/53.1) - Overall Offense

Week 10 - Good - Bahahaha, what?!

(49.3/80.6/49.2) - Passing

Week 10 - Great - I want whatever the PFF crew were smoking when they came up with this.

(65.3/70.9/68.3) - Pass blocking

Week 10 - Good (near Great) - 2nd best performance all season from our big guys up front.

(62.3/63.2/57.1) - Reciever routes

Week 10 - Above Average - Solid performance from almost everyone.

(61.4/67.4/38.8) - Run game

Week 10 - Average. The Patriots played the run and it showed.

(45.4/82.9/62.3) - Run blocking

Week 10 - Good -  One of our better run blocking performances.

264 total yards on 57 snaps on offense and the team somehow got a Good grade... how?

Defense - (week3/week2/week 1)

(57.7/62.3/78.9) - Overall Defense

Week 10 - Average - Again, mainly due to excellent coverage this weak.

(43.1/74.4/83.4) - Run defense

Week 10 - Bad - Worst Run defense of the season by a good margine.

(39.0/51.8/66.4) - Tackling

Week 10 - Below Average - The teams' achilles heel.

(67.4/72.5/73.3) - Passrush

Week 10 - Above Average - Another week of solid performance from our front 4 on the Dline.

(62.1/50.0/66.2) - Coverage

Week 10 - Great - Jones struggled for the Patriots and Blackmon and Thomas had INTs.

Best defensive performance of the year!

Special Teams - (week3/week2/week 1)

(54.7/69.8/78.3) - Special Teams

Week 10 - Below Average - Another poor week from the ST unit.

All of our DIs had trouble with the run game. Buckner did bring the heat in the passing game though. Decent game by the DEs but some questionable run defense from Martin, Lewis and Dayo. Dayo did have 3 sacks! Leonard had the worst game of his career, which is unfortunate after he saif he wanted more playing time. It's worth noting this is his worst game of the season BY FAR. Speed had a good - his 3rd best of the season. Franklin had his 2nd best game of the season mainly due to elite coverage. Baker had the best game of our CBs. Blackmon and Thomas both had INTs - the INT carried Thomas grades.

What's is happening? What a weird game grades-wise. Gardner graded out great. Baker was our best CB and Franklin was elite in coverage.

How does 3 sacks only equate to Good pass rush? Does he need more pressures?  As someone who has pointed out his whiffs on the QB in the past, he had an excellent game in my eyes on the pass rush.  Now we just need consistency.

He did tip it, you can't really tell until you freeze frame it and go click by click. He barely touched it because the trajectory of the ball slightly went to the right after he tipped it. I have looked at that play at least 20 times now on youtube because I didn't want to post this unless I knew he did.

Yeah, the ball took a little dive after he tipped it. I watch it a bunch as well.

@Solid84

Does it breakdown the split grades, let's say for Dayo, at DE vs DT? Same with Lewis?

Don't need grades just let me know if there is a major difference one way or the other.

I’ll have a look-see later today.

Edit: They don't show grades by postion. All I can get you is the snaps per position.

I think it’s because the sacks was all he had. No pressures besides those.

That's ok, it's premium content, was just curious if there was a big discrepancy between the grades of both

Clearly Minshew evading would be tacklers and completing 3 big plays uplifted a number of grades. False positives, as we were overall stinkaroo.

I just think it’s weird his decisions to bail from clean pockets hasn’t dinged his grades more. He did that lot against the Pats.

More and more I just don't get PFF. They were always a bit questionable imo, but I don't get their scores and I seem to be saying that more and more.

PFF is the opium of the masses.  Those who are not skilled enough to see through the veil of ignorance to the truth beneath, and who are not bold enough to venture forth on their own and share their superior knowledge with the serfs who toil in the darkness.

I appreciate that Solid84 puts the grades here and look forward to seeing what he posts

PFF can be a useful tool, if you don't assume their evaluation is absolutely accurate...

As none of us really know, how much effort they put in to analyzing each and every player, on every down, in every game.

Week in, week out, I watch the Colts game live, then I usually will watch it again on NFL+ replay. where I can pause, rewind, etc.

Personally, trust my own two eyes much more than some website, telling me who played well and who played poorly.

I don't get the Minshew grade, at all. Good performance from the Oline with only Raimann and Smith as stand outs. Downs, Pittman and McKenzie had good games. Ogletree had a good game as the only TE. JT and Moss didn't get it going, but, the Patriots focussed on the run game and it showed.

Baker was our best CB and Franklin was elite in coverage.

ur doing the board a real service by posting this each week man. if i could swear i would while congratulating you.

I do the samething. I don't pretend to be an expert, but I'll trust my own two eyes.

I can safely say that I don’t see Leonard being on this team in 2024. All of us that watched the game saw how bad he was, but those grades confirm what the eye test showed. Doesn’t matter if it’s scheme or him just being washed because of injuries, he isn’t playing up to his contract at all.

These PFF score things are confusing... Is my Colts doing good or not???

I personally have never been a fan of things like PFF, Passer rating, or QBR. All of those are simply flawed. If anyone has watched football for at least 30 years, they know who is better than who if they have a great football mind. Who has the leadership, who makes his team better, who comes through in the clutch, who wins, EYE TEST. None of those things are measured on any made-up formula statistical measure. I have been watching since the 1977 season, so that gives me 47 seasons of knowledge lmao .

i completely agree with you! So why would you say that Levi’s had an awful game and just post his stats from the last game?

Because stats are still important to a point, they just aren't everything and don't tell the whole story. You can't just totally dismiss stats if a QB throws INT's or fumbles costing his team. I just thought his stats at Pitt weren't that good hence that post. The real reason why I posted that I thought Levis played average was because of his final 2 drives. The drive before the INT, he had a great chance to take Tennessee down for a winning drive. Milk the clock way down starting from the 48 and they went 4 and out. That drive bothered me more than his last drive. He had hurry on his last drive so mistakes happen. I never said he played bad, I said average. If you by the stats, it looked bad. I did take into account he made some tough good completions, and he is a rookie. He also took a lot of hits. So that is where stats are a non-factor.

In general I agree they all have serious flaws. Tenured fans on this board may remember pff scoring was practically dismissed during Quentin Nelson's rookie year because he was receiving so many mediocre grades!

I think they have they all have their uses(including eye test) but no single method should be relied on completely. But to echo a previous post, I appreciate the grades being posted, makes re-watches interesting.

It's hard to explain in writing, because I can't talk about it in person. Stats are meaningful and do show things, but they aren't the tell all. For example, what if a QB throws for 300 yards, 3 TD's, and only 1 INT but that INT cost his team points, or he fails to score on his final drive to win the game. Then the opposing QB only throws 215 yards, 2 TD's, and 1 meaningless INT but wins the game based on being smarter in certain situations. The 1st QB will have a higher Passer rating and QBR which is where it is flawed. I can come up with 100's examples like that.

So, I’ll add my opinion about PFF.

I value PFF a great deal. It’s not the end all be all, but I’ll take the opinion of a professional crew who watch every single play of every single player over the “eye test” of fans who generally just remember stand-out plays (good or bad). Fans tend to focus on the result of a play instead of what an individual player added to the play.

I’ve used AR’s first TD pass to Pittman as an example before. AR threw laterally to Pittman for 6-8 yards as a screen pass and then Pittman did all the work. But, the statsheet shows AR 1/1 for 36 yards and a TD.

But again, it’s not the end all be all. I like their methodology, but I don’t always agree with what their algorithms spit out. I VERY much disagree with Minshew’s grade this week for instance. I think his decisions to run from clean pockets on non-designed plays should be dinged much harder in the passing grade.

Also, if a person had studied the all-22 and formed an opinion vastly different than PFF I’d definitely take it serious.
