INDIANAPOLIS COLTS MAKE COACHING MOVES

The Indianapolis Colts today have named Bruce Arians the team’s new offensive coordinator and Harold Goodwin as the team’s offensive line coach. The team also relieved tight ends coach Ricky Thomas and assistant offensive line coach Ron Prince from their responsibilities.

Arians holds 37 years of coaching experience, including 19 years in the NFL. He spent the last eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and served as the team’s offensive coordinator from 2007-11. This is Arians' second tenure with the Colts having previously served as the team's quarterbacks coach from 1998-2000.

In five seasons as the Steelers’ offensive coordinator, Pittsburgh compiled a 55-25 record, which is tied for second-best in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers. The Steelers also won three AFC North Division titles, two AFC Championships and were the victors of Super Bowl XLIII. Arians was also part of Pittsburgh’s Super Bowl XL championship as the team’s wide receivers coach in 2005. The Steelers averaged 345.7 net yards per game and 227.2 passing yards per game from 2007-11. Last season alone, Pittsburgh ranked fourth in the AFC in net yards per game (372.3) and third in the conference in net passing yards per game (253.4). Arians also guided quarterback Ben Roethlisberger during his tenure as offensive coordinator. In the last five seasons, Roethlisberger averaged 247.4 net passing yards per game, which ranks eighth in the NFL and fifth in the AFC. He also earned Pro Bowl selections in 2007 and 2011. In 2009, the Steelers’ offense became the first in team history to finish with a 4,000-yard passer, two 1,000-yard receivers and a 1,000-yard rusher in the same season.

Arians originally joined Pittsburgh in 2004 as the team’s wide receiver coach. He guided Hines Ward who, over the course of the last seven seasons, was named Super Bowl XL MVP, was selected to two Pro Bowls and became the team’s all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown receptions. In 2010, Ward also became the first receiver in Steelers history to reach 11,000 career receiving yards.

Prior to joining Pittsburgh, Arians served as the offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns from 2001-03. In 2002, the Browns scored their highest amount of points in a single season dating back to 1987. Cleveland also improved in every major offensive category from the three years prior to his arrival.

Arians joined the Colts staff in 1998 and was instrumental in the development of quarterback Peyton Manning. In 2000, Manning totaled 4,413 yards and 33 touchdowns to break his own club season record. Manning’s 33 touchdown passes in 2000 established a then-Colts’ franchise record previously held by Johnny Unitas.

In 1997, Arians was the offensive coordinator for the University of Alabama following a one-year stay as the tight ends coach for the New Orleans Saints (1996). That season, Saints tight ends combined to total 521 yards and one touchdown.

Arians earned his first offensive coordinator position at Mississippi State from 1993-95. Prior to his tenure with the Bulldogs, he made his NFL debut with the Kansas City Chiefs coaching running backs from 1989-92. Arians guided Christian Okoye to two 1,000-yard seasons (1989-91) and Barry Word to his lone 1,000-yard campaign in 1990. In 1989, the Chiefs ranked fourth in the NFL in rushing (2,227) and in 1991, ranked third in the league (2,217).

Arians was the head coach at Temple from 1983-88 and compiled 21 wins during his tenure with the Owls. He made his first appearance at Alabama as the school’s running backs coach from 1981-82. Arians was the running backs and wide receivers coach at Mississippi State from 1978-80 prior to making his coaching debut at Virginia Tech as the school’s running backs coach (1977) and graduate assistant (1975-76).

Goodwin came to the Colts from the Pittsburgh Steelers where he was the team’s offensive assistant from 2007-2011. He assisted the coaching staff with game preparation, video analysis and scouting of opponents. Goodwin spent three seasons as the assistant offensive line coach with the Chicago Bears from 2004-06. Prior to joining Chicago, he was the offensive line coach at Central Michigan from 2000-03 and added the assistant head coach title in his last season.

Goodwin spent the 1998 campaign as the tight ends and offensive line coach for Eastern Michigan. He began his coaching career at the University of Michigan as the school’s student assistant (1995-96) and graduate assistant (1997).

Ricky Thomas spent 10 years with the Colts organization (2002-2011), the last eight as the team’s tight ends coach. He holds 15 years of NFL coaching experience.

Prince served as the club’s assistant offensive line coach for two seasons (2010-11) following 18 years of collegiate coaching experience. From 2006-08, Prince was the head coach for the Kansas State Wildcats.
