The starters are showing why they were picked.  Mewhort learning his new role. Holmes played solid, so did AC.  Beng it was the Rams defense,it makes it more outstanding. ...... 0..that's 0 sacks.

But our real issue looks like the Guards Herrimans and Louis.  They could not keep their guys out of the backfield on run plays if they payed them to do it.....

Those who been saying 'freeRietz'....you mean let him go? Him and Harrison were positively awful.

Holmes did very well last night.  Harrisson stunk it up.  Reitz at RT wasn't very effective either but it was against a good Rams defense...

I can't stand Louis in there at LG.  I would like to see Reitz in there at LG next to AC.  They always worked well together and I think Reitz is a better G than T.

Harrisson needs to go bye bye though.  He is worthless.

You're right, and I'm not making excuses for them, but the Rams could have the best (okay, second best) DT in the game. He abused Herrimanns. Pep should take some of the heat, those plays were telegraphed, and the Oline had no help.

You'd think that in a preseason games, they'd run a misdirection or rollout down there. So what if we get a safety or INT? It would make other teams think twice when they have us backed up like that.

Correct and me if I'm wrong, but they are paid, very well, to do exactly that!

As for Reitz he's a very solid guard, better than either starter, but he's far from a good tackle.

I don't know why. But I have a feeling Reitz is about to be a beast starting at guard this year. Hopefully Thomas will be his old self this year too. I don't know about Herremans. I have high hopes for him. He was a really good run blocker, but he may be done. So we may be looking at this...Castanzo-Reitz-Holmes-Thomas-Mewhort. Then who knows maybe Thornton still has a chance to turn into that mauler everyone thought he'd be but I'm not counting on it.

I don't agree with most of what's been said in this thread. I've slow motioned every snap this season and see it this way:

Louis got beat on a play at the 5 yard line and it ended up as a no gain. However, he's been by far the best interior lineman all preseason. The left side with Castonzo & Louis has been the highlight of O-line play.

Herremans on the other hand has been the worst interior lineman by far. The near safety at the goal line two plays later was Herremans getting blown up. The number of times Herremans has been beat is now excessive & aggravating, and he can only be described as the weakest link in the O-line. Thornton could do no worse. The best option is to get Reitz over there until Donald Thomas is ready and can prove he's better.

Holmes and Harrison have been in a competition that Harrison is winning, not Holmes. Holmes did have his best game of the year so far, but Harrison, who had his worst game of the year, still played better, again.

The best 5 players and the best group at this point is: Castonzo, Louis, Harrison, Reitz, Mewhort.

Put this group in and give Mewhort help until he gets his feet under him at tackle.

Interesting how people can have such diverse opinions.  I did not study the O line like you did, and I came away thinking that Holmes played better than Harrison.

You're correct that Donald was abusing Herremans, he threw him around like a rag doll.  Not to make excuses but he does that to a lot of players.  I fear you're correct though, Herremans appears to be the weak link so far.

Overall, the line did a pretty good job on pass protection and Boom had a few decent runs.  Again, against a very solid D and no gameplanning that I could see.

Personally, I don't think the situation is dour.  The O line isn't that bad.  I don't think they want to play Reitz because he's our best backup OT.  With his injury history, if he goes down while playing G, we could be hosed if an OT goes down.

Anyway, appreciate your opinion.

He looks to be developing into a solid player.  I don't think he'll ever be the second coming of Jeff Saturday but I think he's solid none the less.  If he pans out that gives Grigson three solid starters on the line going forward.  Still not completely fixed but it's a far cry from the one he had when he took over.

My high hopes for Holmes are dampened, but he can get better.
It took Saturday several years to get much respect.
Our team is filled with young guys that need time.

If you throw out last seasons 4 wins against Expansion quality teams we were 7-5

and 0-5 against the good teams we played.
With a QB that has a LONG way to go throwing quick, accurate passes. He is going to LOTS of practice at it this season!!!!!!!
And a D-Line that has young guys that must improve with experience.
JMO but something has to give at the ILB position. Ugh!

I meant if Herrimans and Louis paid the rams defensive line.... they still could not stop them.

And Rietz has not looked very good this preseason either.

Our line sucks once again and if we have an injury to a tackle we are sunk.  Why they didn't bring in Mathis to play right guard (4 mil 1 year in Denver) is beyond me.  We don't even have a starting lineup let alone depth.  Next year we need to draft 2 stud guards and protect our QB.  I'd spend 2 picks there and 2 on the D line... I love Anderson and Parry, but we need to replace Jones and we need another solid DT.  Also, we need inside LB's as ours are long in the tooth and one is slow as mud.
