Another WR to consider

Recommended Posts

There have many names thrown about on the forum on who we could get at WR for Reggie. Ranging from Josh Gordon to Hakeem Nicks to Steve Smith to Kenny Britt.

But here could be an interesting name. Stephen Hill.here's why:

1. He ( like Gordon, Luck and Richardson) is in his 2nd year, so he won't likely be just a short term game in comparison to someone like Steve Smith or Britt/Nicks( last 2 in their contract years)

2. He is raw, but that can be argued to be a good thing. Pagano and Co can try and specialise him for their schemes etc.

3. He has great measureables. A 6'4, 215 lb wr who can run a sub 4.4, can be a great advantage.

4. The reason he probably hasn't performed well, is because HE'S IN NY where Mark Sanchez was and Geno Smith is their QB.

Any thoughts?

We should definitely hedge our bets in case Reggie can't return next season, but any FA WR we sign will be a liability for most of the remainder of this season. They would have to learn the playbook and develop timing with Luck... sometimes that can take an entire season and offseason.

I like the idea of making a move for Stephen Hill or even Josh Gordon, but I think that a move for Britt or Nicks would be a mistake...  Any FA WR that we pick up should be in the plans for the future, not a stop gap for this season. I think that Nicks is on the decline and was never that great. Britt has his own set of issues. I do really like Steve Smith (Car)...  He's too old and small to fit nicely into Indy's plans, but he has shown no signs of slowing down. He plays hard on every play and has a good attitude for the team. He'd be a great mentor to our shorter receivers (Brazill and Smith are built very similarly). He is also playing very well this season. It would have been great (and creepy) if we would have traded for him before this season began...

I've brought it up in several threads but Vincent Jackson.

Pretty unlikely as the Bucs would have to eat about 8 mill in cap hit. Plus not sure Grigson wants to fit a 10 mill per year (starting in 2014) into his cap.  Plus that.. why would the Bucs want to dump their best WR when they are starting a rookie QB ? Don't you think they would want to give him as many weapons as possible ?

Plus I don't want to trade draft picks for a guy in the second half of his career.  I want a "win now" trade that is also a building block.

Jackson's cap hit this year is only $840,000 and his contract was front loaded the first two years. I don't see the contract being that big of a deal. Jackson's age and contract could make him a lot cheaper than other options due to Bucs rebuilding again.

His base salary is only $840,000. His cap hit is $3,272,000.

Bonuses would stay with TB and we'd only be responsible for 9/17 or 10/17 of his base salary.

Then that would be another reason they wouldn't trade him. It doesn't make sense. It's not like his contract is expiring or anything. They're not going to trade a top 10 WR in the middle of the season when they have a rookie QB, for a 2nd round pick to a contending team and continue to pay the majority of his salary on top of that.

It's a pipe dream.

Not only that, but with a ~$10.5m dead cap hit and less than $7m in cap space, they'd actually have to cut others just to trade him.

They are in full on rebuild tank the season mode at this point Dustin..I would rather have Steve Smith if we are gonna go the vet route, but VJ is actually cheap now and TB will have a new coach and maybe GM next year so i wouldn't be opposed i think he would help a lot..Gordon is my number 1 tho even if it means a late 2nd this year and next..

Cleveland ate T Rich's signing bonus...  giving Indy a GIFT.

I personally do not think Grigs should do anything.. but    where there is smoke .. there is usually fire.

Lets hope, this year is wide open and as you know Super Bowls don't grow on trees..

Justin Blackmon would be my number 1 but I would love to have Gordon all the same.

Ehh, Blackmon has talent but also has off the field issues.

I'm aware. The kid has real talent and potential though. Since Reggie is out he could help train Blackmon to be not just a better football player but be more professional so he could improve life decisions. DHB at the 1,  TY Hilton at the 2 (on the outside, a la Dasean Jackson) and work Blackmon out of the slot. Also, whats the deal with Sam Montgomery? I wouldn't mind sticking him on the practice squad.

Yeah Blackmon has great potential and he'll never break through and become that elite receiver he was drafted for playing in Jacksonville. I'm sure he would like coming to a team with a winning culture and a real QB. The off the field issues are a concern though. If he could turn it around that would be great.

I agree. It would be great if the Colts acquired him. I proposed this on another thread, our 2nd, 3rd, Kavell Conner, and maybe next years 4th for Justin Blackmon and Maurice Jones-Drew.

The Bucs other receiver, Mike Williams, would be a better (and more realistic) option

I like Williams....but unfortunately he tore his hamstring and is probably headed for the IR.

All this after he inked a 40M deal with TB before the season.

Ouch

I think we're gonna have to ride out the WRs we have....hopefully Brazill steps forward with some big plays.
