Colts sixth round selection: John Boyett, safety, Oregon.

That is so different. Where all the draft websites had him valued at we could have waited until the end of the draft and got him as a free agent...

You don't automatically get any FA you go after, other teams have their priority lists.  It's not like we wasted an early round pick.

This was a no brainer.  Low risk, very high reward.

All i am saying is that we could have waited a round to draft him.

and u know that how?  because he was rated lower???  please look at your entire ratings list and compare and contrast how many players have actually went where projected.  Especially round 3 or later.

this is getting disgusting

Exactly. Kiper, mayock etc don't have nfl jobs because they obviously aren't great talent evaluators. How can people be complaining and questioning grigson's decisions after last year? How many starters did he draft? Lets see: luck, fleener, Allen, Ballard, Hilton? Not to mention chapman, who I think could be our starter at nose. Come on people, just trust our guys and stop crying because we didn't get such and such. Our defensive front seven will be monstrous this year. And the offensive line will be a far cry from what it was last year. I love this draft.

That team had no where to go but up??? Anyone could have started over the te's and wr's we had except Wayne...He hit on Jerrel Freeman, but missed on Satele and Justice...Hardly a genius and anybody and their mom would have picked Luck 1st..

Guys that miss their senior years will pretty much always get drafted rounds before where they might have gone. I'm reading that he played through injuries in 2011 to boot.

High reward? He is a short safty who doesn't have elite speed and had bad knee injuries.

You understand the concept of low risk, high reward, right?  This is a SIXTH ROUND PICK!

I'll give you an example - we drafted an unknown kid from a very small college in the sixth round in 2006.  Very low risk pick.

Think that was high reward?

When you get into the later rounds of the draft, guys with injury history seem to come off the board at a frequent rate.

That is the case with Boyett as he missed virtually all of his senior season with a knee injury.

Boyett is known as a hard-hitting safety and at 5’10″ and 205 pounds he brought physicality to the backend of the Oregon secondary.

As a three-year starter for the Ducks, Boyett led Oregon in tackles twice during his career in Eugene. In 2010, Boyett earned All- America honors after recording 78 tackles, 14 pass deflections and five interceptions.

In Oregon’s 2012 Rose Bowl Championship win over Wisconsin, Boyett tied a bowl record with 17 tackles (13 solo.

Boyett indicated on a conference call with local media that he played through knee pain during his junior season and did not miss a game in his career at Oregon until 2012.

He's very good depth for now, and could play very well on special teams.

For those saying that he's a replacement, I think he's just a depth pick for now. He's not even guaranteed to make the roster.

If Bethea is gone after the season (and praying he's not), they'll probably find a replacement that draft.

II watched TY Hilton's highlights last year and thought "wow".  I watched this Boyett's highlights for 2011 just now and thought "wow".  He really goes after it with reckless abandon.  Now, if he can just stay healthy after his knee surgeries, he will be impressive.

ESPN just did a piece on the Colts. Tedi Bruschi loves what Grigson is doing and said that we will win the division this year. Jaworski loved the Heyward Bey and Francois pickups. Bruschi said the Colts are here to stay the way we are building our team.

At this point I think it's difficult to label a pick as a reach. If it's a kid you like, take him.

No doubt.  I'd like to point out that we took a safety in the 6th round in 2006.  He was average sized but from a very small school.

As I recall, he turned out okay.

Boyett has great range and doesn't shy away from contact, even being a starter he still was on special teams blocked a kick and does kickoffs.

If he is ready as from watching his workout video that he will be ready, we might have a gem here(Bethea was in the 6th round). This guy can play with the best of them when healthy.

Imo, the best pick we've made so far.

Tough as heck, missile-like safety. Reminds me a bit of Bob Sanders - a bit too much perhaps, considering the injury problems.

Allegedly has an enormous football-IQ, and is a natural leader on the defense. Could prove to be a future Bethea-replacement.

Not allegedly, he was the QB of the Ducks' defense.

He doesn't have elite measurables but rarely makes mistakes and has a nose for the ball. Great pick.

Allegedly as in "this can't possibly be proven". Also, I'm not a big fan of the word "football IQ", as it's basically just a reference to instincts and muscle memory when it comes to football.

Hurt all year....no way he holds up at Safety in NFL much like Melvin Bullitt...

You really have a knack for proving yourself uneducated. He had a single knee injury in the first game and was lost for the season. Missed one game his first three years of playing, leading the Ducks in tackles twice.

    • Okay, I know this is a Mr. Obvious post, but bear with me.  What else do you have to do during the dead season, lol?   As a Buckeye, I appreciate how good CJ Stroud is.  In MHO CJ had better WRs and RBs when he was at THE OSU than he has in Houston.   So how did TTUN beat us (bad) two years in a row when he was in Columbus?  Simple, their Offense was way better than our Defense.   Bottom line - the Colts D doesn't have to be great.  Average will be good enough - IF the Colts offense is as good as we think it could be and play ball control, has extended drives, and limits the other teams possessions.  And maybe that's the plan considering Ballard not being too concerned with improving the DB rooms.   (Sure, it would be nice to have a great D.  No argument there)
    • Hey Everyone,   So, I just caught wind of Goodson's apology letter after dropping that short pass from Minshew against the Texans last season. Here's my humorous take on the situation:   "Dear Fans, Coaches, Teammates, and Supporters,   I'm writing to apologize for buttering up that short pass in the most critical moment against the Texans. Look, I know I'm the backup running back, but hey, I'm usually good for catching those short throws - emphasis on 'usually'. My bad for turning a routine play into a blooper reel moment.   To my teammates, sorry for making you wonder if I was secretly playing for the other team. Next time, I'll practice catching more than just footballs thrown by the water boy.   To the coaches, maybe let's reconsider throwing short passes to guys who have hands that are more slippery than a greased pig at the county fair. Just a suggestion.   And to the fans, thanks for turning my drop into a meme. I promise to work on my catching skills so I can make highlights, not lowlights, next season.   Sincerely, Goodson (aka the running back who should stick to running)"   Okay, maybe I exaggerated a bit, but you get the gist. Let's hope Goodson has been hitting those catching drills hard this offseason!
    • I remember looking for highlights of TJ after we drafted him.  I kept finding videos of him following OJ Howard into the endzone.  Not sure if Howard was his responsibility, but it didn't paint a promising picture.
    • Ballard,   So, yeah, about that whole "bust" thing—I guess the cat's out of the bag. Turns out, I'm more of a popcorn fart than a thunderclap. My bad.   When you drafted me, I thought I was gonna be the Colts' next big thing. You know, sacking quarterbacks, making highlight reels, maybe even getting my face on a cereal box someday. But instead, I've been about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.   I've watched the tapes, Coach. I've seen the memes. They're comparing my NFL career to a hangover—starts off with high hopes, and ends with regret and a lot of Gatorade. And honestly, I get it. I'm like that guest who shows up to a party uninvited and ends up eating all the chips.   So, here's my mea culpa. I apologize for not living up to the hype. For every missed tackle, every missed sack, and that one time I accidentally tackled our own quarterback in practice (sorry, Philip). I'm like the guy who brings a guitar to a party and insists on playing Wonderwall—I'm annoying and not nearly as good as I think I am.   But hey, I'm not giving up. I'm hitting the gym, studying film (mostly bloopers at this point), and practicing my touchdown dance for when pigs finally fly. I promise to work harder and maybe, just maybe, I'll redeem myself and earn my place in the Hall of Mediocrity.   Thanks for believing in me, and letting me live my dream for 4 years straight whilst simultaneously producing nothing for your team. I'll make you proud yet, even if it's just by being the team's MVP of Bust Central, and we aren't talking bronze heads.    Sincerely, Ben "The Bust" Banagous (Not sponsored by Gatorade yet, but a guy can dream)
    • if you scream MODS! in anything I write,  I might get in trouble. hahaha
