Is there any chance Luck's new deal...

The NFLPA will not say boo to Luck if he takes less. They didn't say a word to Brady when he signed his ridiculous extension two years ago that will pay him $7 mil in base salary next season.

Luck can do whatever he wants and if he is like Brady and would prefer to leave money to build a winning team, more power to him. I love what Brady has done for the Patriots over the years.

It might not say much about one instance but if it senses a trend of players taking less then their market value, I have a strong suspicion that it will step in somehow.

They don't want any salaries being artificially lowered by several top players taking significantly less then market value.

Especially with a player like Luck who is young and likely to set the market.  Him taking a low-ball offer would severely hurt the value of every QB after him.

I don't know how much they can do, but they wouldn't really take something like that laying down.  Now again I don't think it's going to be a problem, it's his first contract after his rookie contract so he's most likely going to be looking for full market value.

I don't see it being a trend or Luck even doing it. Brady is really the only high profile QB in the cap/FA era to do it.

Whats Brady get paid again? Ultimate team player. There's a reason y those guys are so good yr after yr.

He signed a 4 year $72 million contract extention right before the 2010 season which made him the highest paid NFL player at the time.

Now his new contract yea.

Question.

How do you know what the NFLPA said to Brady?

Seriously.    You think that stuff often gets reported?    It doesn't.

It sometimes gets reported, and that's how I know.

You may be right.   But you don't know.

I think it's a dumb assumption to say that Luck WON'T take any less money and only care's about himself. Sure Money is important...but he wants like anyone else to win the SuperBowl (multiple times). If that's the ultimate goal then you want to make sure the team can spend money to put those people around you to get you there. But sure...he wants $$$ like anyone else.

IF I was Luck I'd say...sure I'll take less money as long as you take my "free money I gave you" and invest it in a DAM*** O-Line to protect my a*!*@ because I care about that just as much as money!

Sure. But think about it. What is the PA really going to say or do to Brady or the Patriots? It is between him and the team. There is no CBA rule that says a player has to play for top market dollar.

Obviously, but I hope there is some give with Luck and his agent and some negotiations on the team's part.

There's room for negotiation, but there's just no way Luck's agent will settle for less than what Colin Kaepernick got-  6 years, $110 million and $61 million guaranteed...

With a couple years before the deal upcoming and revenues rising, it will be for more than that.  And even then (depending on final value) could still be less than Luck's true market value.

We'll just have to wait and see.

I doubt he'd ask that in the first place, and very much doubt any team would promise to take his discount and spend it the way the player wants in the second.  Nice thought, though.

This kind of thing happens in all sports.

A player like Tony Gwynn gave the Padres a home town discount,  and he shared the the Baseball players association called and yelled at him and yelled at his agent.

This kind of stuff happens whether we hear about it or not.

Baseball has a MUCH stronger PA than football.

But again, what would be the point? The NFLPA has no leg to stand on when it comes to contracts between players and teams. If Luck decided he wants to take 20 percent less than what he could command, I can't where the PA would influence him at all. They can yell at him and his agent but so what.

Luck is under contract through 2015. We have a 5th year option for 2016, which is going to be worth around $15m. Then, we could probably tag him in 2017, if necessary, for around $20-22m.

Before 2017, Rivers, Roethlisberger, E. Manning, Brees, Newton and Wilson might all get new top ten average contracts.

Before 2017, the salary cap might be higher than $150m/year.

Before 2017, Luck might have an MVP, a Super Bowl, maybe a couple of NFL leader spots, etc. He might also have a bad season or two (less likely, I think).

There's no way to forecast Luck's next contract. It will probably be well north of $20m/year. It probably won't be more than 1/6 of the cap. We'll definitely have to draft better. Whatever happens, whenever it happens, there's no reason to worry about it now. We'll probably start the 2015 league year with $40m+ in cap space, and a full assortment of draft picks. Let's maximize that, and worry about Luck's deal when the time comes.

All anyone is saying is that Brady probably heard from the PA, not that they have any real authority or say in the matter.

No, that is not what was originally said. This was:

I once thought he'd be giving the Colts a modest hometown discount because he's simply not money driven.

But, as the number one pick in the 2012 draft and a player perceived to be among the top-10 quarterbacks by almost everyone and a top-5 QB by many, I think he'll be under huge pressure to to take a full value deal.

The NFLPA will tell him he's got a responsibility to protect other players.    That if Luck takes less,  owners will tell all other players to take less as well.     The pressure will be enormous and relentless.

So,  I'm now expecting something like 6/150 (25 per)  or maybe even something like 8/200 and make him the first 200 million dollar NFL player.

The team can afford a 25 million dollar contract.    There will be a new TV deal soon and that will push the team salary cap way up.     Currently,  it's about 132 Mill....    The projections are it's going up to 150 and 160 and 170 within a few years.

The Colts can afford this.   Grigson and his staff have prepared for this.    We'll be able to keep all the players we want to keep.

It is the bolded that I took issue with. The PA may something to him but the pressure will not be enormous or relentless IMO.

Leg to stand on?     Who said anything about a leg to stand on?

They have no legal standing -- period.   And I've never said otherwise.

What the NFLPA does have is a responsibility to all of their players to help them all get the best deal.    And I'm confident someone at the NFLPA will make a call to Luck's agent and maybe even to Luck himself.

What I don't know is how they'll respond?   There are lots of different things that they could say.   Ultimately,  it's Luck's call.

But I do think he'll be somewhat influenced to take the position of rest of the players strongly into consideration.   He's not only a recent first round pick,  he's the heir apparent to being one of the 5-10 best players in the league.    He may feel responsibility to protect other players -- including those in his own locker-room.

If you're all lathered up about my comment that the pressure will be enormous and relentless -- fine.

I withdraw it.

I don't know. You said the PA didn't say anything to Brady, and NCF said you can't know that. I don't think the point is that the PA can force anyone to do anything, but that the PA will try to exert influence.

Another thing, I don't know whether Luck's agent has any other NFL clients, or wants any. I believe it's his uncle. If he has any ambitions as a player agent, the PA could make things difficult for him.

I think it's all going to be overblown, personally. Irsay doesn't have any problem paying his best players like they are the best players. And with the cap going up, and the team not having a lot of obligations so far, I don't see anyone trying to get Luck to sign for less than what the market dictates. The only issue might be if his people come in asking for prime+, which I don't think they will. I think his deal will eventually get done, and everyone will smile and shake hands, and that will be that. I'm much more concerned with the other thousand personnel decisions that need to be made between now and then. The QB is here, and will continue to be here.

No kidding. Luck you know is WORTH the money. It is everyone around him that will decide how well the team will compete. I don't think he should take less. Not in football when you are one play from being done.

I would think there would be an extension before he even gets paid off the 5th year option yet alone a franchise tag in 2017. Usually these are win-win deals that save the franchise some cap room while affording the player an earlier payday with a bunch of guaranteed money. Where you see deals go to the "end" are the Cam Newton's not the Aaron Rodgers .

That's another angle, though. The deal won't be fully guaranteed. We're mostly talking about yearly average, but regardless how that shakes out, I think he'll probably have the highest amount of guaranteed money of any player in league history. He won't do one of these staggered guarantee deals like Kap or Dalton, or even Manning (which was mostly about his recovery). And that makes sense, because if he's on the field, the team is on track, and if he's not on the field, it doesn't really matter what else we do.

So, that being the case, I could see him not setting a new high for yearly average, but getting a staggering amount of fully guaranteed money. Whatever happens, it's not really worth worrying about. He'll get paid, and the team will have to do a good job of keeping talent around him. I think Grigson has already started preparing for that. If we keep rolling money forward, we can frontload the heck out of his new deal and get the pain out of the way with more reasonable cap hits going forward.

Most likely. I'm just pointing out that there are a lot of variables. Also sort of countering the idea that's popped up in other threads that Luck might choose to go play elsewhere if the fans' idea of a dynasty franchise isn't realized within the next 15 minutes...

I'm having a hard time remembering any QB's that left their teams after being offered market value. Somehow Luck doesn't strike me as a guy that would say "get me a better O line or I'm gone." On a different note , it's interesting to note that both Dalton and Kap seem to be struggling after signing those "lower type " guaranteed deals.

I think Dalton has been what he's always been, just without AJ Green. People started grading him differently after he signed his new deal, but most of his numbers are pretty well the same. TDs are down, but Green has missed half the season so far. Completion percentage, interception percentage, yards/attempt, etc., all right in line with his career. And his role on his team is the same. He might be steering the boat, but he does very little paddling.

Kap, I think, is dealing with a lot of different things this year. The defense isn't quite as good, the division is better, and he still doesn't have a great cast of receivers. And the coaching seems to be unclear about whether they want to continue being the power running team they've been, while giving Kap the ability to make plays with his legs, and transitioning to a more QB centric, traditional pocket passing offense. He has a lot of work to do before they can rely on him as a pocket passer, and that's always been the case. (Ironically, there's another thread here about how much better Harbaugh would be as our head coach, yet the Niners are having an identity crisis on offense.) Similar to Dalton, I think expectations changed for Kap; I don't think his play has changed too much.

On topic, it's rare that good QBs change teams. Manning, Brees, and that's pretty much it. Favre had a renaissance for a year, but he was pretty awful before that. Maybe McNabb, but he was traded. Long story short, Luck ain't goin' nowhere...
