Phillip Lindsay and Deon Jackson's Pass Protection

I was very impressed with both Phillip and Deon's pass protection. It was apparent from the live feed. It was nice to hear Frank Reich mention it in his post game press conference. This is an area a team usually misses the most when starting running backs go down. The Colts running backs were well prepared for this game. Scottie Montgomery deserves a lot of credit.

Things that do not hit the stat book, but win football games.

Glad to see you back, @BlueShoe

Yes, a totally underrated aspect of the game, RB pass protection. Peyton had it in spades with Edge and Addai. Luck had it good with Bradshaw and not so much with the other RBs. Given that Frank rarely devotes extra resources to help with chipping, the RB protection ends up mattering a lot for the numbers the offense can enjoy. Good job by the RB coach. Hopefully it will carry through to the Titans game.

ballard overpaid again

He has 2 years, 14 million left after this year right?

I’m sure we could get a team to take on most of that & send over a 5th round pick.

He would do great over in NE or as LAR change of pace back imo

Absolutely, this is something I have discussed several times in the last couple years.

Taylor is as bad as it gets in Pass pro. He's terrible at it and he probably is never going to be good at it.  The most important thing about pass pro for an RB is lateral quickness and mirroring.  Not going to be a strong suit for Taylor.

He's often in on 3rd and long and it's mind boggling, he just gets ate up when he needs to pick up a rusher most of the time.

Hopefully, it is obvious that Jackson is much better suited to a 3rd down roll than Taylor.  It will help.

Taylor might catch one and break one every once in a while on 3rd and long, but much more often he will hurt the team with inadequate pass blocking.

I really hope this is one of those obvious things that management will clearly see and adjust too.

I think we tend to leave whatever RB was already in the game in on third down most of the time.  They dont seem to like the concept of a third down back

Very well could be they pull Taylor on obvious passing situations  and put on Jackson. Especially on 3rd and long.

A lot of downs you want Taylor’s big play threat but on obvious passing downs he shouldn’t be in the game.  Everyone does this in the league.

JT is really really bad at pass pro.  And hasn’t really improved.  TN uses a 3rd down guy. It’s one of those weird things management does.

Hines is actually a plus pro guy and they didn’t even use him in that obvious way.

on first watch during the game it was great pass pro from backs all afternoon.  It was striking really.  Blisters were picked up.

Proof is in the pudding, the Hines contract seems like a bad idea in hindsight.

Playing Hines was always an iffy idea...we needed to invent plays for a small short light RB .

Now it is a bad idea...would rather see Lindsay in as RB3. Deon is RB2 of course.

Yeah Taylor maybe a great runner but u can't give him big money if he refuses to pass protect. It is so vital to have your #1 running back pass protect.

And that's why u can't give e him big money. Teams know that when they take him out of the game, it is usually because he can't protect and the defence can than surmise what the next play maybe.

Now watch, as soon as Hines is clear, Deon Jackson will be an afterthought

Afterthought on paper, I agree. On the field, it would be hard for Frank to ignore. Hines normally has that 1 or 2 good games a season he is good for. With Rivers, that 2 TD game with his somersault after a TD vs the Lions at home, and the road TNF game vs Titans he did really well when we won with him running (also had a special teams TD for the Colts).

That game is yet to come this season and hopefully sooner than later.

Teams have discovered that rushing with five is great in getting Matt Ryan to fumble and making poor throws.

They know he is accurate so their scheme is perfect. Against the Jags we learned how to pass protect agains 5, now it is very important we learn how to run against five.

Impressed with a lot of responses in this thread. I was kind of surprised to see Deon get all the praise for pass protection , which he deserves. He did very well. I haven’t rewatched the game yet, but from the naked eye, Phillip stood out in pass protection more. Some of those blitz pickups were outstanding.

    • You will held to account for your positivity, sir.
    • Ok, here's my prediction. Both Flacco and Ehlinger will be on the team this year.  And for similar reasons. Flacco is here expressly to lead the team to the playoffs as a seasoned veteran quarterback, in case AR5 gets injured again. Ehlinger is here in case both quarterbacks go down, if they just need somebody to play. Next year? Flacco will probably not be here, simply because of his age. Ehlinger will probably not be here, simply because there's no reason to give him a contract beyond his rookie deal. I predict that next year, we will sign yet another seasoned veteran quarterback.  To do the exact same thing that Flacco is here to do.  Lead the team to the playoffs in case AR5 is hurt. And I also predict we draft another mid-round quarterback.  For the same reason Ehlinger is here.  To be an inexpensive guy to play the position just in case both quarterbacks go down.   Who is my veteran quarterback for next year?  I'm guessing Andy Dalton.  No, he's not my choice for starter.  But if I needed a guy to back up AR5, who's a "been there, done that" kind of guy, to play just in case...  Yeah, I would think so.
    • This is footage from just one game. The big game be had against the Titans.   And this isn't about the catches he made that game. It's the missed opportunities of what could of been. Find time to watch this, worth it, well if you care to see how open he usually is. Not just deep either.     This is just one game, it is like this every game.(Maybe not to this extreme, this is bad)   This clip, shows just how open Pierce usually is and how Minshew held him back, as well as the whole team.   Pittman and Downs were short options, and easier for Minshew to get the ball out to, that's why it didn't effect them(negatively). It actually benefited them.     Not to worried about it, now the team is just even more explosive.   AR JT Pittman Pierce  Downs  Mitchell      On the field at the same time in some formations. I'm here for it. Can you imagine the running lanes JT would have? Hate to be these defenses and have to face this offense, with this OL.     Then able to add a 4-5 deep TE room to it. Another 4.38, 4.43 WR to the mix(Gould, Dulin)
    • Pierce wasn't  the best route runner , but Pierce was good at getting  open deep, but the deep ball wasn't  really minshew game that is why people  say Pierce was held back by minshew arm.
