Might do a 1st Quarter Positional report this week as well. Weird having 17 games, but we're officially not past the 1st Q.

Will try to keep this going every week with updates so we can follow along performance peaks and valleys

Bobby Okereke's and Khari Willis' performances this year have been most disappointing. All the vibes from this summer was that they were going to emerge this year and be leaders. It kind of makes me wonder a little about the coaching. I mean, when they first entered the league, OK they had issues to fix, but they had a solid base/potential to work off. Ballard needs to be asking these questions to himself, why are they players not developing/taking the next step in their career... why are they regressing. Maybe its just talent, but I think coaching is part of it too.

I feel like Walker/Autry leaving (and Houston to a degree) impacted our D more than expected, across the board.  Seems everyone has regressed.  Bazillion injuries and no pressure doesn’t help.

Just don't get what is seen in Bobby O by the staff but whatever. I'm sure they think he's turning the corner.

And I know Rock has been out but where is all the vast improvement stuff coming from? Is it that he's just been better than a bad bunch of teammates at DB?

I look at players like Strachan and I'm baffled how he hasn't seen the field more. Has arguably the second best catch of the year, and mad two huge 1st down rec on 3rd down all against Seattle. And gets benched. While Campbell drops the ball everytime a guy breathes on him. Strachan fights like a dawg for the ball. I'd like to see Rochell get an increase in action...I like Stewart but the rest of the DTs blow... cut Stallworths, Banogus, and Williams, Woods counts... we could honestly cut Woods for another position. We need to randomly line Buckner up across the line just to disrupt player assignments for the opposing o line..Donald does it

Strachan will get his time. That gong isnt the one to be banging right now, not after that game in Baltimore where all the pass catchers and the QB showed up. Can Strachan play ST? Or defense? His time will come.

Might do a 1st Quarter Positional report this week as well. Weird having 17 games, but we're officially not past the 1st Q.

Will try to keep this going every week with updates so we can follow along performance peaks and valleys
As always, if you don't like PFF... just don't click..

Keeping it simple

  • Rounding up
  • Under 50 - Red
  • Over 70 -  Blue

Format

  • Player - comments
  • Snap count % (per game)
  • PFF grades (year to date, not per game)

Top 5 this week

  • Mark Glowinski - 85.5
  • Chris Reed - 78.3
  • Jack Doyle - 76.4
  • Xavier Rhodes - 69.2
  • Tyquan Lewis - 69.0

QB Note -

  • C Wentz QB - 4th game in a row of 70+ grades. However you want to look at it, he's arguably been the best player on offense so far.

Well we should throw him out a little more in the Redzone atleast. Was I the only one seeing what the kid was doing...it wasn't everyday catches and he does it consistently and got a lot of outside the organization notice..we will end up releasing him to go light the league on fire somewhere else...

Again, after the last game, i'm not sure this is the time to be complaining about a WRs usage. I get the excitement about Strachan but generally this staff operate with a host of pass catchers featuring on any given day so he may get his time yet. Though after seeing how it went for PAtmon last year, i wouldn't bank on that. Just be happy he's on the 53 then wait and see.

Walker yes, Autry no. If we still had Autry then Lewis wouldn't be getting the snaps which he has played well.

Glowinski's grade was higher than I expected, and Blackmon's is lower than I expected.

One player I feel we haven't heard much from and really needs to step up is Kenny Moore, coming into the season he was ranked the best nickel corner in the league and he has disappeared.

I think it's a few things for both.

Okereke  - has just never been great vs the run going back to college. He worked out decently in the time share playing later/passing downs, but now he's out there all the time, and teams are picking on him. His coverage was never great/elite IMO either. Not sure you can develop run D skills that were never there in the first place. Now you could argue he's regressing a bit in pass D, and that's fair, but I'm just not sure he was ever that good. And now he's not coming in fresh every few downs, he's out there all the time. To me, Ballard just rolled the dice letting Walker go, and it simply didn't work out. We'll see how things go the rest of the year, and if Ballard is stubborn and doesn't address if things don't improve. I'd be looking for a MIKE from any team interested in Mack to be honest. If not, a FA or in the draft next year. Our middle is definitely suffering right now.

Willis - has done pretty well in the box, and has been iffy outside it. Pretty sure the 3 TDs (or at least 2) in the first two weeks were in C2 and he was picked on outside of the box. Purely my opinion, but he simply needs to stay in the box lol... Houston has two speedy WRs in the 4.3s that could torch him if we use him in C2. And like Oke, just not sure he's ever been great in deep halves or other deep coverages. I'm not sure if we're playing more C2 this year, or teams are just versed on our film and specifically go vert whenever they see Willis in certain coverages. Either way, I think this just goes to Flus for personnel usage and scheme/coverage calls. I still think they need to move Blackmon to SS and find a true FS.

Yeah I completely agree. I think a MLB who isn't good in run defense and a DB who struggles in coverage were always going to be tough issues to fix. I think nonetheless, we'd like to see more development and improvement each year. I don't think Willis and Okereke really are all that much improved in Year 3 compared to Year 1.

Like for example, take Braden Smith. He was almost always a guard in college (a little tackle experience granted) but if he was struggling in 2018 to convert to T in the NFL, I think we'd understand. But maybe.. Braden was exposed to great coaching that allowed him to succeed in the NFL as a T and block the NFLs best DEs (as an aside note, I think firing Dave DeGuglielmo was a terrible decision).

I think overall, Ballard's draft picks have developed much better on the offensive side of the ball compared to the defensive side. I think, with the exception of Leonard who was and All-Pro rookie, maybe just Grover Stewart was the only player I can point to that showed continued growth and development each year. I think its a big issue for Ballard, as he decides to build his team almost exclusively thru the draft, he therefore has to be hitting on his 3rd and 4th round picks.

Have a feeling changes are coming soon in many spots

WR-Hilton coming back and Patmon soon after....D.Harris will be gone from P.S. as he can not be elevated again so taking a spot since no avenue for him to get a roster spot. Patmon may be waived and tried to sneak through.

D Line- We have too many bodies and many arent playing or arent playing well. Stallworth,Williams,B.B. expect at least 1 cut maybe 2 with Woods being brought up (Not that he has played well either). Expect Khalil Davis to start getting reps soon he is fast (4.75 40 which was 6th fastest for all D Lineman at combo).

Linebacker-With Oke struggling we need someone to start getting snaps, could be Speed who has been invisible so far, could be Malik Jefferson who seems best suited to fit the bill. Glasgow eligible to come off I.R not sure he makes it back to regular roster however.

DB's- Jordan Lucas may be brought up as early as this week if Sendejo isnt ready to go. Tell could be brought up as well, not sure hoe deep in the doghouse he is though could be deep.

RB's- Dont really want to see Mack go as I think he is what we need depth wise and seems back but understand he wants a shot at being a lead back or 1B at the minimum. Not sure what mystery illness Wilkins has (Kidney stones ?) but if a spot opens we may not fill it and use that spot for another position in peril. Deon Jackson would be the call up from P.S.

Glowinski may have had a high game score from PFF but it was his fault that field-goal got blocked. He never came out of his stance. I believe it’s in the contract year and probably not resigned

So what.   Players make mistakes.  Even great players do.  He is in his contract year and he could easily be resigned.  He fits well on our line.  Ballard can see that.  I expect Ballard will make him a offer and it will be up to Mark.

Dude he didn’t even come out of his stance on that field goal that’s not really a mistake that’s a mental blunder and it cost us the game

So players make mental blunders all the time.  Probably more so than mistakes.  It’s part of the game.  Believe me.  The team has moved on to Houston.

I think there's a difference in looking at upsides for guys like Smith vs Willis and Oke. Oke and Willis played the same positions more or less in college they are playing now. And both had the same limitations then as now. So just not sure you can "develop" what probably was never there. Oke had always been suspect vs the run, and his strength and ability to navigate traffic were always flags. Willis IMO simply doesn't have the speed and athletic traits to a vertical coverage guy. So I just didn't expect much improvement from either. I thought maybe Oke could hit the weights and learn to shed a bit better, but even that was a tall ask.

And Smith had the size and athletic traits. He was primarily a OG (and a good one), but was always going to be a mystery at T. He was known as a mauler with prototypical size and measurables. Folks thought he might not have the ability to slide out in pass pro and pick up the rushers, but IMO, that's a technique type of thing that can be learned/developed. His combine measurements were pretty darn good all around His strength, vert, long, jump, etc were all very very good when compared to top OTs. So in short, Braden I think always had the raw ingredients. The others, not so much.
