Art Jones on depth chart

Art Jones has been taking reps with the back-ups throughout camp thus far and is listed as the last DT on the depth chart.

I am assuming this is because he is facing a 4 game suspension to start the season, but I still find it a little odd.  For example, Brady's going to start the year suspended, but is still taking first team reps with the Pats.

I am probably over-thinking this, but does anyone else think Jones' listing on the depth chart and the fact he's not getting starter reps may spell trouble for him in terms of making the roster?  Obviously his health issues and his suspension are not good things.  I was thinking for a second 'maybe the coaches view him as a proven vet, so they don't need to see him performing with the starters or getting a lot of reps', but then realized he hasn't really proven much here (our defense is significantly better against the run when he plays, but he's missed more games than he's played in) and would think, if he's fully healthy, that the coaches would want to see how he's performing with the #1's....

They are slowly working him back up to speed.  He's been out for a while, so they want to ease him back in to things coming off that injury.

Who cares how the Patriots are doing things with Brady?

He's last on the depth chart the same way injured players like Geathers are last on the depth chart.

He's not getting first team reps because the guy who is going to be starting the 1st four games needs to get the first team reps.  And if that person does well, I would not be surprised if Jones does not get the starting nod at all, until maybe after the bye week.

That was another thought of mine... have you seen any of the coaches actually say this is the case?

Jones, who will miss the first four games for violating the league policy on performance-enhancing drugs, was not placed the physically unable to perform list, which means he’s been cleared to practice. Because he missed all of last season after ankle surgery, Pagano said the sixth-year pro will be brought back gradually.

“Anybody that’s coming in and coming off of something, we’re going to be smart in how we ease them back into things,” the coach said.

I think Art Jones was probably on the hot seat anyways. Add to that his suspension and the fact that he's still not going at 100% (which may be the coaches' decision), and it makes sense that he's not high on the depth chart. I doubt he plays on Sunday, even if he's not on the hot seat.

Right now, I think he's got about a 50% chance of making the roster.

I wouldn't over-think what his spot on the depth chart means.

He's either going to make the team,  or he's not.    And we'll know by how well he plays in the pre-season,  or he doesn't.

For a guy who is both injured and suspended for the first four games,  I wouldn't read to much into things just yet.

Maybe by week 4 or so of the Pre-season,   but not now.....

Part of me would like to see us just cut the guy and move on, but then I think about Anderson's injury and realize we'll need a fresh veteran to supplement our line even IF everyone plays well and stays healthy.  But he counts as a roster spot so we'll be extra thin somewhere due to his cheating (and that is exactly what it is.. he's forever a cheater, no better than any of the others...).

Agree 100% with Coffee and Superman on this one. He is in real danger of being cut I believe. Particularly because of he minimal cap hit http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/arthur-jones/

That would be true if Jones had a "minimal" cap hit.

But $3.6 Mill is not minimal.      We can all debate what the definition of a "minimal cap hit" is....

But I don't think $3.6 Mill would be in that discussion.

Nah I think he's a lock to make the roster this year.  But I think it's pretty clear this is his last chance to make an impact.

If he spends the majority of the year injured again he'll be sent packing before next season starts.

I've had him following the Donald Thomas route all off-season.  I don't expect him to make the team (two straight bad season-ending injuries in a row at his age is probably too much to overcome).  But if he surprises, he could make the team.  I got nothing against him, and I realize he was derailed by injuries, but he is out-of-the-money right now and his depth chart position seems right to me.

I do not think they will cut Art Jones unless he gets another significant injury.  If he's healthy he can play and he knows the system. Once we get into the season there's not going to be too many guys we can call upon who automatically know our defense.  Unless one of the potential PS guys like Delvon Simmons shows that they can play well enough to where we don't need Jones. Or maybe Kelcy Quarles comes out of the blue and starts playing lights out.  Doubt it!

They reduced his base to protect themselves if he gets hurt, so they aren't going to cut him just because they're worried he can't stay healthy. But I do think they'll evaluate him pretty aggressively.

Yah, him and that dirty Mathis!  Good grief!

We are stuck with his Dead Cap $$$ of $3.3M left from his original contract of course, no matter what.
And we can save Mr. Irsay $2,5M of cool hard cash, his real cost for this season, if we cut him. But you know this because... you are wise!

Whatever the number is,  I hope Jones makes the team and is a big contributor.

I think the Colts are better with a healthy solid Art Jones than they are without him.

Considering how little we've gotten from him so far,   I'd like to get 3 very good years from Jones.......

Agreed we can all debate what minimal is. To me it is minimal. To me it depends on what that years current cap situation looks like to an extent. I think once you get to 5 mill and of course above that then for me it becomes a difficult decision. To me I think if Jones is not cutting it the coaching staff will come together and say alright time to let you go and the 4 game suspension further hurts him I think. Do I think he will be cut? No but it would not surprise me. If he is not cut I am predicting this will be his last year though unless he just plays at a high level once he returns from suspension

    • So true. I was watching his presser yesterday as I wanted to get a feel for him after some of the negativity surrounding his personality on the draft day, and I LOVED how happy and excited he was. I had a little fear that some of the fan base would buy into the negativity prematurely and make it a rough start for him, but I don’t think so anymore.    I think he and Latu are both going to be playmakers for us, if not this year then very soon. Have a feeling they bring exactly want this team needed to finally take off. They bring a lot of faith to me, together with Richardson and Steichen. Can’t explain it, but the pieces to the puzzle is suddenly to see on the table.
    • Cubs beat the Pirates tonight but the Brewers won as well, what else is new lol. Cubs are now 23-16, Brewers are 23-15.
    • Couldn’t agree more! The chip on his shoulder is a very good look. That said, I have always valued the “clutch” gene in players.    It’s truly something that can’t be coached and can’t be taught. AD has IT! Period. Exclamation point! He has it. Name a better receiver in the college football playoffs/ championships ever…   You can’t teach that. He has it. He can be that guy. He is the 33-32 Colts over the Pats, 4th and 1, AFC Championship, game changer. He can be that guy… Will he? I have no dang idea. But does he have the ability to be? Yes! Resounding, yes!
    • I absolutely LOVE that Mitchell picked 10 as a constant reminder that 10 WR’s were picked before him.  That is a GIGANTIC chip on his shoulder.   So far I like everything I’m reading about the kid.  There may be speed bump or hiccup some day….  But so far so good.
