Post Combine Free Agency and Draft

Recommended Posts

I’m gonna do my best to be the assistant to the GM here, and provide my analysis on what I would do after watching some of the combine.

Free Agency (37 mil cap room)

Cut C Samson Satelle- saves 4 mil

Resign - CB Vontae Davis, RB Donald Brown, S Antoine Bethea, K Adam Vinatieri, P Pat McAfee, CB Josh Gordy, OT/G Joe Reitz. (Davis/5  years, 40 mil) (Brown/2  years, 6 mil) (Bethea/2  years, 6 mil) (Vinatieri/ 2 years, 5 mil) (McAfee/ 4 years, 8 mil) (Gordy/ 2 years, 1.5 mil) (Reitz/ 2 years 1.5 mil)

Sign free agents – OG Geoff Schwartz, DT/DE Linval Joseph (Schwartz/ 3 years, 10 mil) (Joseph/ 4 years, 16 mil)

Remaining  Cap Room – 14 mil

NFL Draft

2nd- Indy trades 2nd rounder to Cleveland for their two 3rd round picks

3rd(via Cle)- OLB Marcus Smith (Mathis can’t play forever, and Smith and Werner could be a good duo of OLBs for the future.)

3rd(via Cle)- CB Stanley Jean Baptiste (Need a talented press corner to eventually replace Toler)

3rd- WR Donte Moncrief (I believe this is a #1 WR with size in the making)

*Indy trades RB Vick Ballard for 4th round pick*

4th(via trade)- FS Ed Reynolds (Could start in his 2nd year)

5th- C Bryan Stork (Good competition to challenge Holmes)

6th- ILB Prince Shembo (Converts well to a physical run stopping ILB)

7th- Best RB available (Helps replace Ballard)

Still have approx 10 mil of cap space to carry over to 2015.

Its early in the offseason, so anything here is subject to change...

I like what you have done with the players who were on the team last year.

I like the signing of Joseph. I haven't figured out the Center position yet, so but I'm leaning towards signing Hawley from Atl, or re-sign McGlynn.

For drafting, I don't mind the trade down (if you could actually get two thirds for a low 2nd) I think a 3rd and 4th is more likely.

3. Christian Jones, ILB/OLB Florida State.

3. Our third...trade down, pick up a 4th and a 5th

4. Deandre Coleman, DT/DE, Cal.(Yes both Lival Joseph and Coleman this offseason; they replace Moala and Matthews in the DL rotation).

I don't think you could get anything for Ballard, coming off the knee.

4. Andre Hal, CB Vanderbilt..takes Vaughn's spot on the roster, but the dude ran a 4.4 at the combine, so he'll probably be gone by the 4th. If so, some other CB or a S like Kenny Ladler, Vanderbilt.

5. Justin Ellis DT/NT Louisiana Tech. Replaces Franklin in the DL rotation.

5. Michael Schofield, OT, Michigan. Developmental OT to replace Link or Reitz.

6. Spencer Long, OG Nebraska. Probably would have been a top 100 pick but tore ACL during the season. Would have to be PUP'ed like Chapman was his rookie year.

7. Some RB/WR with lateral agility. I miss watching Terrance Wilkins back in the day.

Ballard is worth at least a 3rd though. But if they trade him, I'd think they would package him with the 2nd round pick and try and get Darqueze Dennard in the 1st.

I was thinking that too but he's also coming off injury.  If healthy I would say he's worth at least a 3.

Personally I see no reason to trade him at all.

We have 3 OLB's already on the roster. We could use one for depth maybe in the 6th round but not that early. I think WR is a bigger need then OLB but that's still 4th or 5th on the needs list after ILB, S, DE, and CB.

Three on the roster and only one of them is a difference maker.....and he is 33

And why is that? We improve at our positions of need with this scenario and get younger on defense in the process.

You didn't address one of the biggest issues ... the Center position ... and no assuming Holmes is the guy, and bringing in Stork does not address our need IMO.

The Ballard trade is horrible on multiple levels
