Its saying we have the 3rd most space with roughly 46 million.

Im not quite sure how we dont have the most space since the only player Im aware of that we're paying big money to is Mathis next year. I know Bethea is making decent money too but its probably only around 6 mil a year.

Yeah, I seen Cleveland and Cincy has more money than us and I can not figure out how that is possible. Maybe they have a ton of free agents that need to be resigned and the numbers don't reveal that. I haven't taken the time to look at how many free agents each of those teams have, but something don't seem right to me.

Reggie is going to make decent money.  Adam makes big money for a kicker but that's really not much when compared to other NFL Players.  Brown probably has some money coming his way since it would be the last year of his rookie deal.  Not a tone of money but decent money none the less. Same with Redding, Davis, Luck, and Castonzo.  Those are "expensive" players right now.

Of that 46 mil we will probably end up re-signing McAfee and Moala out of that and it seems like some around the Colts feel like they might keep Powers as well (got that off the Star article yesterday)  So that will eat up some money but none of those guys are "big" money type guys and other than McAfee could easily be replaced if they think they are big money players.  McAfee is a punter though so much like Adam we could pay him big money for his poistion and really not have it impact the cap greatly.  Don't be shocked if he gets our tag this off-season if we don't get a deal done with him by then.

Bill Polian? :burnout::hide:

Honestly Polian was a master of the cap for a lot of years.  This year played out the way it did because Grigson blew up the team and started over.  That was not Polian's plan I am sure.  He would have kept the vets and probably extended a guy like Freeney to make the cap space they needed.

Yeah...he did okay keeping us highly competitive for a long time....but I wouldn't call him a "master" of the cap.

Polian's main problem was that he had such a hard-line stance against free agents that he spread our available cap dollars rather stubbornly and too heavily amongst players he drafted.

Now....its pretty normal for a team's own drafted players to receive the lion's share of cap dollars when contracts come up...but Polian took it to a point where when it might have made sense to delve into free agency to acquire 2-3 key pieces that could've helped us win another SB or two the cap dollars were rarely, if ever, there.

No one bats 1000 when it comes to salary cap management....I understand that.

But going year after year falling just short of winning it all for pretty much the same reasons and not having a dime...or evidently, the desire...to TRY and fill some needs thru free agency cancels Polian out as any kind of salary cap "master" IMO.

It is good that we now have some money to bring guys in.

I could see us possibly keeping Powers just for depth reasons, but I doubt he will be cheap and will probably walk.

Also I see Freeney walking to a more 4-3 team. He didn't have the stats to justify him as a solid OLB. I would much rather go with the cheaper, younger Hughes.

I don't know why it's hard to believe that other teams have more cap space than us.

The Bengals have a lot of players on rookie contracts, and a lot of free agents in 2013.

They could be a major competition of ours in the offseason since they are the only good team that have as much money as we do..and here I thought it was gonna be a walk in the park where we could have almost any FA we like..

Well, for one thing, it was widely reported that the Colts would have far more money to spend than any other team in 2013. Another thing is that I said they could have a ton of free agents that they will resign, but with all the money that we got rid of this season and with all the dead money we played with this season, I don't see how any other team could have more money coming off the books than the Colts.

When looking at who is competition for FA, since many will want to go to a winning team, then I think you look at other attributes to determine who may have an edge. If you look at Cin. and competing with them, although their image has drastically improved the last two years, Mike Brown finally hired a GM I believe, and I believe they finally built a practice facility for themselves, those two things I just mentioned are the stigma attached to Cin. Very tight with $$. I don't know how the new CBA rules will impact Cin. because I don't know as some posters have said  the loopholes within it, and i am sure there are some. I do know any owner who won't build an indoor practice facility, until the past year, in a cold weather town, is not a team many want to go to.

Brown, just can't say right now because of the change in ownership, but if we look at it from a historical point of view, and the division they play in, still a tougher sell.

The Colts, winning history the last 10 years, an owner willing to spend to win, and now a coach who many have said "players would go through a wall for". I think our head coach is going to help in the recruitment of FA's and although I am far from partial, I think the Colts really are a good destination for players with a choice of teams IMHO.

    • Thank you. You guys are too kind, but I truly appreciate the support.    Perhaps I am being too hard on myself… But my point still stands that anyone who makes it to the NFL, whether practice squad or starter, has achieved something prestigious that only a rare few ever achieve.    Over a million high schoolers play. Of those only 7.8 percent move on to play in college.    Over 80,000 people play in college. Only 0.4 percent make it to opening day in the NFL.    Only 2,016 players make it to NFL rosters.
    • Davis had a very good rookie season after being drafted in the 2nd round out of Ohio State (I believe).   Graded in the 70’s against both the run and pass.      But his last three years have been disappointing, as he’s graded in the mid-50’s.   The reason I’m so interested in this signing, is (A) I’m sure it was heavily influenced by the new DL coach, Partridge.   And (B) we’re paying him 2/14.  I don’t recall that kind of money ever being given to a basic backup before.   Don’t think Davis is here to push Stewart, the Colts just signed him to 3/39.  That tells me the Colts defensive staff sees him differently.   I don’t know what the plan the staff has come up with for Davis, but I’m looking forward to watching it play out.
    • What I’m reading on him the Pacers did get good value. Looks like he will need time to develop but he is in the right situation to do that. The pacers are stacking some quality young players that will prove to be more outstanding depth or assets if they choose to make a trade. Very exciting time for the team right now.
    • I’m not a religious person, but since you’re an educator I think you’re doing Gods work!   In these crazy insane times we’re all living in you’re doing one of the toughest jobs on earth.  And you’re teaching perhaps the most difficult generation to deal with.     From a distance it feels like you’re being very unfair to you.  I’m hoping in time you’ll see yourself in a completely different light.    Someone highly thought of.  A leader in the community.  A protector of young minds.   I couldn’t admire a teacher more.
