2024 PFF Free Agents Rankings

Calvin Ridley is an interesting target. Can/Will Jacksonville make the move to extend him? If they do they have to give up a 2nd round pick to Atlanta, and they have to save cap space for Josh Allen.

Players I wish we would pursue:

- Jaylon Johnson

- Chase Young

- Xavier McKinney,

- Jonathan Greenard

- A.J. Epenesa

Players I can see Ballard going after:

- Jonathan Greenard

- Dorance Armstrong

- Javon Kinlaw

- John Simpson

- D.J. Wonnum

Some of those will probably not even hit free agency and will either re-sign with their current team or get franchise tagged... but oh well...

I think for me, I would focus heavily on the offense in the draft (though there are so many defensive prospects I like too and wouldn't pass on BPA if it were defense). So my free agency would be to stock up on defense, since I think there are a lot of good guys there too. And would target Brock Bowers, Powers-Johnson, and Will Shipley for the first 3 picks

Would love:
Josh Allen

Frankie Luvu

More Realistic targets:
Xavier McKinney

Maurice Hurst

Blake Cashman

Teair Tart

Resigns:
Grover Stewart

Tyquan Lewis

FWIW:   I think Kinlaw has a very questionable knee.   I think he had it when he was drafted.

I like:

Josh Allen, DE

Christian Wilkins, DT

Antoine Winfield, S

Jaylon Johnson, CB

Leonard Williams, DT

Bryce Huff, DE

Chase Young, DE

Frankie Luvu, ILB

Dalton Schultz, TE

Jonathan Greenard, DE

Xavier McKinney, S

Paterick Queen, ILB

Geno Stone, S

Noah Fant, TE

Most of them aren't realistic though.

I think Noah Fant or Dalton Schultz could be worth taking a shot at.

I think guys like Jaylon Jones and Xavier McKinney are a bit risky, because they've been considerably better this year than prior years and that's always a bit of a red flag when it's contract years.

Josh Allen is probably too expensive if the Jags even let him go. Same with Christian Wilkins and the Dolphins. I doubt the Jets let Huff go, but he's really intriguing. Can't see the Texans letting Greenard walk.

Luvu and Queen aren't leaving either.

If Ridley makes it to FA he could be the first player we sign.

Jaylon Jones, again who sits? Flowers looked great almost lockdown, Jones surpassed expectations and now is going in year 2. Moore is top 3 slot corner. Brents is only question. Baker is good at limited snaps.

Brian Burns, but who's playing time do you take?

Which FA does teams have to gameplan for? Or these just bodies on a team? I think the only positions that can be upgraded is LB(Speed is good, i think we can upgrade athletically at MLB), TE, RG, maybe S. Besides that depth at DT, OL, and a pass rush specialists.

Winfield maybe best upgrade.

I think it's about adding a quality veteran to the CB room. We kinda need that. Baker ain't it.

The DE is for the LEO position in my opinion. Get a guy like Josh Allen, stick him at LEO and move Ebukam to RDE. Paye is rotational level when it comes to passrush. If he wants to keep that spot he needs to up his game quite a bit. If he doesn't and we don't add a guy this offseason I could see us try playing Lewis over Paye. Maybe Lewis at LEo and Ebukam at RDE.

And Winfield is one of the best FSs in the league right now. Even if the Bucs let him walk he'd cost us $15+m and I seriously doubt Ballard pays that.

Was thinking about Allen but he gets his sacks in chunks and doesn't put constant pressure, and will require alot of money. I still think they'll ride with Paye another season, but I agree with you on him. Veteran presence in the CB room, maybe Snead. Baker is cheap, and worth another look.

His sacks may come in chunks, but his overall pressure is pretty consistent from the stats I can find.

The guy has more total pressure than Garrett on fewer snaps - how bad can he be lol.

Didn't realize, I do know most of his sacks came in 2 games. If we sign him that prolly means end of Paye experiment. Money won't be there to take his 5th year option, but this does take away a threat in our division.

Essentially, it was Kinlaw for Buckner.  What a GREAT trade by Ballard!

edit:  Although one might wonder if Tristen Wirfs, Justin Jefferson, CeeDee Lamb, Jerry Jeudy, or Jordan Love might have been more key, long term. But at the same time, with Costanzo and Smith at OT, so no realistic need for Wirfs there.  TY Hilton & Pittman at WR, so maybe not glaring, but still.  & Rivers was signed for that year pre-draft, though one could argue Jordan Love as an understudy might have been wise.  I still say great trade, though, even retrospectively.

The forums #1 choice for that draft was Kinlaw. We really needed to improve the 3T spot that offseason. Word was we were ready to take Love but GreenBay traded up to make sure they got him.

I am starting to lean in on

Bryce Huff  OR D Hunter

The Jets and Vikings are cap stretched, and both have an excellent chance to not be franchised. (The Vikings will probably use the tag on their WR)

This defense will sink or swim based on the pressure that we are able to generate

Bryce Huff played less than 50% of the snaps but was 3rd in the league on pressures and had 10 sacks. He is also 25

I do think that we need to get another CB and a playmaking FS in the draft, but it won’t matter unless we start to get pressure on the QB

This team had a decent amount of sacks but near the bottom on number of pressures

IMHO, we waste a full year if we don’t address this glaring hole on the roster

if we do go DE in round 1 it will take 2-3 years for the kid to develop

I hope that CB recognizes this and makes his splash at DE

Since we have our LT and QB on rookie QB deals we have a short amount of time

The time to act is now

I know the chances are slim to none but being able to take Josh Allen off the Jaguars would be amazing. Danielle Hunter would also be an amazing signing but there's no way in hell Chris Ballard would ever cough up that much money on a player in FA. Jaylon Johnson, Brian Burns & Antoine Winfield Jr would all be great signings IMO.

Agree 100%

But..... there will be teams that dont have much cap space

Such as the

New York Jets - 2024  - 7.5 M Cap space

I don't see a way that they can resign Bryce Huff DE, rookies , and their other FAs

 Minnesota Vikings - 2024 - 20M Cap space

I dont see a way that they can resign Justin Jefferson, and Cousins (Both will be +20M)

AS well as D Hunter DE

Also, keep an eye on the Chiefs, they have a little bit of room this year, Mahome has a mind boggling salary impact

Will they sign Chris Jones this year ?  25-28M, know that they will have to resign many stars in 2025?

I believe that CB WONT go sign 4 or 5 FAs......  thats not his MO

But

He DID go after cheap and mid level FAs in the past

IMHO, just ONE FA splash at DE could make an enormous difference

We were lucky to play a crap schedule this year, Wins will be much tougher this next year if we are again 27th with the number of pressures

Free Agents am looking to upgrade and add quality depth are:

On Defense:

  • FS Xavier McKinney (NY Giants) - top-10 marks in 2023 and a solid tackler better forcing incompletions
  • DT DJ Reader (Cincinatti) solid both pass/rush game
  • DT DaQuan Jones (Bills) again solid pass/rush game
  • DT Maruice Hurst (Browns) dominate both passing and rushing game
  • Edge Carl Lawson (Jets) - go back to when he was dominate in Cincinatti with Reader but Lawson wins at pass-rushing
  • LCB Jaylon Johnson (Bears) - projected to be franchised and probably a reach but could see the Colts bolster their Utah connections.  (Blackmon, Zack Moss, and our next backup QB Tyler Huntley)

On Offense:

  • SWR Parris Campbell (NY Giants) - former Colt provide depth behind Downs, proven history of low drop rate.
  • WR-X Olamide Zaccheaus (Eagles) - another low-cost signing that had a better career with Steichen.  Small size reminds me of Hilton and again low drop history.
  • WR-X Brandon Powell (Vikings) - similar build to Zaccheaus (Hilton) with low drop history.
  • RG Greg Van Roten (Raiders) - Will be 34 years old still playing very well and bounces around year to year would be a great addition to camp compete with Fries.

Forgot to add Tight End Adam Trautman

Frankie Luvu has done well for himself. I went to a Jets preseason game to see Teddy Bridgewater play for the Jets.  I sat next to a group of people that were wearing Luvu jerseys. The man to my left and I wondered who Luvu was. We figured he was an undrafted free agent rookie and that was his family rooting for him. I thought he would be cut after training camp and would not play much in the NFL. haha. It was August 2018 (the first year Teddy was no longer with the Vikings). I'm surprised to see Luvu still playing and being a coveted free agent.

Speaking of free agents, if I had my pick, I want CB Jaylon Johnson.

I don't think we will be signing Cousins unless he gives us a discount. I hope to keep Hunter.

All these players are really good players. Getting any of them would help the Colts a great deal.

Regarding Johnson….  He would seem to check every box, except one.  He’s got the height, weight, speed and quickness.   And he’s backed it up with production.

But the one thing he doesn’t have may be a deal breaker….  He doesn’t have 32 inch arms.   His are 31 3/8ths.   Typically that has been important to Ballard.   Will it be in mid-March?
