Compensatory Picks

if this is nfl draft then move it there, but do we get any for saturday, tamme, anderson, and pollak

The NFL office will offset those loses with gains: Avery, Redding, Zbikowski, McGlynn.

The league will calculate not only the quantity, but the quality of loses and gains for each team.

And if there is a net loss, will provide a compensatory at the appropriate level and time.

Next year it counts. We only get compensation if we lose more players than we sign. If we lose more players, which is probably what will happen, the Colts should get some real good picks next year.

Signed: Donnie Avery, Mike McGlynn, Cory Redding, Samson Setele, Reggie Wayne, Tom Zbikowski

Lost: Kerry Collins, Ryan Diem (Do you get compensation for retired players?), Jerome Felton, Pierre Garcon, Anthony Gonzalez, Jacob Lacey, Quinn Ojinnaka, Dan Orlovsky, Mike Pollak, Jeff Saturday

There's still quite a few players that are still on the FA market. We will get a few extra picks next year.

The lost players only count when they sign with another team so no Diem and Collins dont count.

You can add Jamaal Anderson (to the Bengals) to the list of unrestricted free agents that the Colts have lost - they are the only ones that are factored in when the league decides on the compenstion picks, not players released - for a total of 9 lost and five signed. I don't think that Reggie counts because he was one of our players but I could be wrong. I won't be surprised if we sign one or two more players - maybe a TE and a D-line - but once the dust settles I would expect the Colts to receive three or four picks next year based on the value of the contracts and the anticipated performance of the players we've lost.

I think it's already been announced that we'll get a 6th and 7th this year with the possibility of another 6th. I'll have to look into that to be sure though.

Looks like it will be a 4th or 6th rounder. The fact that we signed Kerry Collins will cancel out either the Clint Session or Charlie Johnson losses. It has yet to be determined which pick we'll get. Thanks again Chris Polian for all that you've done for us...

That is correct, it is handled by the "NFL Weigh & Balance Committee for Compensatory & Fair Player Movement"

That's unlikely. Collins played 3 games and was minimally productive, and that factors into the equation. Clint started 6, was relatively productive in those 6, and signed a big contract. CJ started all 16. It's all figured in.

I doubt they will lose out on one. It's possible, but I doubt it.

I assume that works the same for re-signing Reggie? I mean he shouldn't count against us next year when they tally up gains and losses, right?

What about Bob Sanders? Was he cut or lost in free agency?

players released dont count. only players that left via FA. since jeff, tamme, pollak, and anderson left via FA we might get picks depending on certain weight ins, but guys like peyton, brackett, addai, bullitt, and clark guys we released we dont get anything in return

I don't see us getting much this year. Probably a 4th and 6th. Next year with the loss of Garcon especially I think we will likely get at least a 3rd or 4th. The rest I don't see us getting much for or at least being a wash for what we picked up. If Jeff and Tamme play a lot and are productive we possibly get something else but Garcon is the only one that will really net us something next year.

Here is a separate question. The NO Saints lost their 2nd round pick...that pick according to the players association has to go somewhere or be accounted for. So how will the NFL address that. Will some teams get a compensatory pick.....how about Minnesota, Arizona, and us for them targeting qbs in 2009 lol. But seriously that means compensatory pick/s for somebody.

All teams will essentially slide up one slot for the rest of the draft when when the draft reaches the Saints 2nd round pick. I don't think any compensatory picks are being given to the teams who were a target of the bounties.

I know those targeted wont that was kind of a joke but there has to be some sort of compensatory picks because the NFL has to ensure that the money and job that would have come from that pick goes to a player somehow. I am not sure exactly how it works but essentially the players union the NFLPA will say that it isn't fair to eliminate a "players" job over the scandel. I would think that would mean say like 3 or 4 later round picks handed out to equal the pay of the lost 2nd rounder. I could be wrong because I see no word on this out there but it doesn't make sense to me that the NFL will void a players chance to be a second round pick because they are punishing the Saints and not put in some compensatory picks to offset the lost money to players.

Like in the Patriots case for Spygate and the Broncos 2005 lost 3rd rounder over salary cap infractions, it will go off without a hitch. The Player's Association didn't make the argument before and likely won't do it now. They also won't hand out extra picks in that manner, because the draft has a preset amount of picks within it. There are 256 picks in any draft, making up 8 rounds of 32. These include lost picks (like the 255 plus the Broncos lost pick in the 2005 draft) and compensatory picks (such as the 254 picks in the 2011 draft, along with Josh Brent and Harvey Unga being supplemental picks in the 2010 draft, moving their selection back a year.)

The hypothetical '8th round', by the way, is from Compensatory picks. After they hand out how ever many they decide are deserved, they then tack on more picks at the back end of the 7th round in normal draft order. So if any less than 31 picks are handed out, the Colts will get an extra pick at the end of the 7th.
