Arians on end to season: 'Nice that our fans are *'

What we need to take away from this, is that Bruce Arians likes fans who aren't satisfied with just making the NFCCG, the rest is all opinions on the matter.

I think that is the flaw in your argument. Acknowledging some level of success does not mean that the fans are "satisfied". They want to win just like you do.

Yeah that's not even close to the same thing.  Calling something an achievement is not the same as saying it's an award.  Making the playoffs is an achievement.  Making the divisional round is an achievement.  Making the championship game is the achievement.  None of these, however, are the ultimate goal, nor do you receive an official award for any of them.

Yeah, it doesn't warrant celebration; and I wish the Colts would take that banner down.

Ok let's not use the word achievement, if I go to the bathroom right now and drop a deuce, that is an achievement too.

People here talk about making the AFCCG like it's some great thing that happened in the season, in reality, it just means you were the 3rd or 4th best loser.

I don't think the bolded is a prevalent viewpoint, not literally. Maybe figuratively, as in 'we weren't even supposed to be contending yet...'

To me, it was a good thing that the Colts made it as far as they did in 2014. It obviously would have been better to go further, but three years after hitting the reset button was a quick turnaround that most people didn't expect back in 2012. To me, that's a noteworthy achievement. Doesn't mean we need to throw a parade, and it doesn't mean I'm satisfied or content with just making the AFCCG in 2014. To me, it's nonsense to even suggest that.

well, the problem though is that "achievement" literally is the correct word to describe it. lol

It is a great thing that happened.  Only two teams from the AFC make it that far. They thoroughly beat the Bengals AND the Broncos and made it to the Super Bowl of the AFC with a chance to go to the actual Super Bowl. It's also nice to know your team, that just completely blew up their roster and cut a living football legend, made the right decision, and is making clear progress each year in such a short time. Only one team wins the Super Bowl and there is a lot of luck involved. So really, this progress comforts fans and lets them know that the franchise is headed in the right direction.

You have to search long and hard to find a Colts fan who agrees with that banner.

I didn't say Colts fans. I said the Colts. As in, the team runners. Who decided a semi-finals appearance was worth hanging next to championship banners.

That's a lot of banners...

I don't understand why it has to be all or nothing. Obviously, the ultimate goal is to win the Super Bowl. But when your team stumbles into the playoffs and and winds up going the title game, it's okay to say 'it's good we made it as far as we did.' That doesn't mean you're not hoping for more.

There is one ultimate achievement in the NFL. There are plenty of lesser achievements that should be acknowledged. No, you don't have to drop a banner for those lesser achievements, but there's a world of difference between making the AFCCG and going to the bathroom.

I thought we were talking about fans in this thread, not the people running the team. If Irsay wants a runner-up banner, there's going to be a runner-up banner. None of us have any control of that, and it's not a reflection of how most Colts fans feel.

But that's not what happened? The Colts won 5 of their last 6 games. And their only loss was when they had nothing to play for.

I think the attitude of saying 'it's good we made it as far as we did.' is what makes other people and teams think this team and fan base are soft. Complacent with mediocrity. I don't know, you don't have to agree, but I think it says something that Arians is happy that his fan base isn't satisfied with the end result of the season, and is fired up about it.

That would be the 2015 Texans or the 08 Cardinals. The Colts have not been stumbling in to the playoffs. The expectations are a bit higher.

But I think you were just using that as a prime example to express your point, right?

I don't even know how a fan base can be soft (unless we're talking literally...as in too many hotdogs at the game)...nor why it would matter if they were.

It obviously matters to those posting about it, right? Why? I guess lunacy.

Meh; those five teams they beat averaged 5 wins in 2014. They snuck out of Cleveland with a one point win. The Colts weren't playing well down the stretch, with the exception of the Washington game.

Based on how the Colts were playing at the end of the season, many people expected them to lose to the Bengals. Most people expected them to lose to the Broncos.

I'm fine with rephrasing that, but it's not really the point.

Nobody expected the Colts to lose to the Bengals, a team they had literally shut-out in the regular season.

I guess that's not really the point, but you really phrased that to make it sound more (i guess) sympathetic than it actually was.

I don't really care what other people and teams think about the Colts or the fan base, nor do I think saying 'it's good we made it to the AFCCG' makes the team or the fan base soft. It's simply acknowledging an achievement.

That's nonsense. 'It's good we made it this far, now how do we get further' isn't complacency.

Doesn't really make a difference, though. Colts fans are no more satisfied with our blowout loss in 2014 than Cardinals fans are with their blowout loss in 2015. Colts fans are no more complacent than Cardinals fans are.

They not only beat the Bengals before, but had home field advantage against a Bengals team with out their #1 receiver in the Playoffs; the Colts were definitely favored

Oh how right you are Mr Arians! As it turns out he likes to see fire from his  fan base, and he likes that they are * that they didn't make the Super Bowl. I had to post this, because some here say they are happy when the colts just make the AFCCG or happy when we make the playoffs and call the rest of us "spoiled" when we complain that we didn't get another ring. As it turns out, some NFL coaches like when the fans get up in arms....

Arizona has a much better team than the Colts.  I would've been plenty **** if my favorite team was decimated by Carolina in the NFC championship game.  I was pretty up and arms with the Colts atrocious year, as I think many others were.  I like Arians a lot, and I'm glad he feels that way about his fans.  More power to him.

I'm assuming you don't literally mean 'nobody.' Plenty of people, especially in NFL media, picked the Bengals, despite the fact that the Colts shut them out in the regular season. Maybe those people expected AJ Green to play when they made their picks...

I think Arizona has a much better Defense than we do but I have never been sold on Carson Palmer. I think Andrew is much better when he is healthy. Carolina winning was a foregone conclusion. I didn't think Arizona would get blown out but figured they would lose.

I remember almost everyone on ESPN picked the Bengals to beat us. It's funny how many times those guys are wrong over there haha

Yeah, lots of people were picking against the Colts. AJ Green wasn't ruled out until game time, so maybe that was part of it; he didn't play in the regular season game, either.

Not that it means anything; even successful professional bettors are wrong a lot.

Nope, you got me man, I literally meant nobody.

Most people expected the Colts to win. The Colts were favored by 4 points, at home, playing a team they already shut-out in the regular season,  who hadn't won a playoff game in 20 years, and was without their #1 WR.

The Colts neither stumbled into the playoffs, nor were they expected to lose to the Bengals.

Both Superman & SH are exactly right. A fan base has a right, dare I say a duty even, to appreciate the teams we beat that nobody outside of INDY expected us to. And NFL Fan was also right on the money in stating that "Acknowledging some level of success does not mean that the fans are "satisfied". They want to win just like you do."

But, I also concur with SH & Dustin, if a team & it's fan base begins to take pride in knocking at the Lombardi door as opposed celebrating kicking in the door & winning the trophy yourself as a franchise; you will constantly fall short & stumble on route to acquiring another ring.

Yes, I fully admit that I place more value on rings than I probably should. It's like NFLfan said it boils down to what a fans level of 'satisfaction' is. Me, I don't give a hoot about passing yards, touchdown completions, or consecutive starts just getting to & winning SB Championships & I make no apologies for that either. It's how I'm wired.

Yeah I don't gamble on games regarding money but do love to make predictions as you know. The only time I gamble is when I go to the casino's and I play slots. I usually lose but it's still fun. When I went to Vegas in Feb of 2010 I could've bet on the Colts/Saints game, it's legal to bet on games there but I stayed away from that even, thank God because we lost. I was there for SB weekend that year

I said many people expected the Colts to lose to the Bengals. I didn't say most. You said nobody did.

Being favored by just 4 points, at home, against a team you shut out earlier that season, with their #1 receiver questionable to play, is kind of an indication of popular opinion. Just four points at home, against Andy Dalton, possibly with no AJ Green? That's saying something.

And plenty of people, fans and media alike, picked the Bengals. http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2015/1/3/7480851/colts-bengals-2015-picks-predictions-nfl-playoffs-wild-card-round
