Trade value in Coby Fleener

Sorry, missed highlighted part. Ask yourself, why would we pass up a DE/OLB in Upshaw when we are changing to a 3-4 hybrid, then pass on a good O-lineman in Glenn when we needed O-line help, to draft a 1 dimensional TE in Fleener. Grigson is always looking the good players every where, but let 2 slip by that fell into his lap.

In my mind, that was the only reason that made sense. Let us not forget, that Fleener was passed on by 2 other run first Offenses in the 1st round (Tampa and NY Giants).

What has Upshaw and/or Glenn done in the NFL thus far? Neither have produced more for their respective teams than Fleener has for us so who really got the short end of the stick out of those 3 players?

Glenn has been very good. Better than fleener

Actually,  while Upshaw has been a bit of a disappointment so far, Glen has been better than advertised.   Better than Coby.

 

Doesn't mean it will always be this way.....   but so far, Glen has.....

However, I think Fleener is a good pick as well. He struggled as a rookie (surprise! most rookie TEs look like dizzy kangaroos), but played better in 2013. And with Allen coming back, it allows Fleener to be used as more of a flex TE, which is what his attributes suggest he should be.

Agreed.

 

I think none of us have seen the best of Fleener or Allen.    And we haven't seen what our offense can be when they're both healthy and used properly. 

 

A two TE offense with Allen and Fleener used right can really cause a defense some serious trouble.

 

I'm thinking a poor man's version of what Gronk & Hernandez did for the Pats....

 

Only, the Colts have the WR's that New England doesn't have.

I even started a thread before the second day of the draft suggesting Cordy Glenn could be our version of Carl Nicks and that we should draft him, I wanted him badly.

 

A couple of years later, we are still drafting for OL. With Peyton, we knew we had an established OL before investing in a flex TE in Dallas Clark. It was not the case for Andrew however and you couple it with Arians' system, Luck was often running for his life. No Winston Justice, no money spent on Cherilus either and we could have at least had our RT, if not OG on his rookie contract. I realized the cupboard for skill position weapons was a bit bare but I leant OL all the way there.

 

But then, we probably would have had no idea that Allen would still be there at the top of round 3 to make that position a luxury. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20 .

Glenn, I believe went to the Pro bowl last season.  Upshaw has been a solid player.  Fleener has been average for where we drafted him at.  If Dwayne had not got hurt, IMO, we would have seen less of Fleener this past season.

If Upshaw has been solid, then so has Fleener.  I would not say that Upshaw has outplayed Fleener by any means, in fact if I had to rank the 3 based on production since coming into the league it would be:

 

Glenn > Fleener > Upshaw

 

I liked both Glenn and Upshaw in that draft as well and I understand what you mean about not having any proven 3-4 OLB's at the  time.  But as others have said, we had NO quality TE's on the roster.  Eldridge was the only one under contract at the time.  

 

Looking back, if anything I think we got a bit of a steal getting Fleener at the top of round 2.  In a different draft, he could have easily gone at the back-end of the first round.  Eiffert went 21st overall and I think Fleener was better coming out than Eiffert was...not by much mind you but still I would put Fleener ahead.

I don't understand why people are so hard on Fleener.  In his first two years in the league he has more catches for more yards and as many TDs as Dallas Clark had his first two years in the league.  Actually Fleener had more catches last year than Clark had in all but three of his years. Actually it wasn't until Clark's 5th year that he topped 50 receptions.

 

Fleener had a bit of a disappointing rookie season with some big drops but that wasn't a problem last year at all.  He really seemed to be settling into the role and it appeared the game slowed down for him a lot in the 2nd half of the season.

I'm not sure I'll ever understand why there is so much negativity about Fleener on these boards.  He's been pretty damn good so far.

His numbers doubled across the board from his rookie season, including yards, receptions, TDs. And I don't care if it was only because Allen was out, that's not his problem. He went out and played, did everything that was asked of him. If he does have one weakness, it's run blocking. But I didn't hear anyone complain about run blocking when Dallas Clark was our TE.

They can be better than those 2. Gronk hasn't played a full season in 3 years, and Hernandez is in prison for killing like 40 people. I'll take our guys all day.

I'm not comparing them to the injured Gronk, or the murdering Hernandez......

 

I'm comparing them when both were at their peak.

This is still a thing? Look at the injury to Ballard and Brazil picking weed over football and realize we haven't even played a pre-season game yet and you will see why it doesn't matter what kind of value Fleener might have the Colts aren't trading him.
