Getting Down to 90.......

Scott Pennock

Recommended Posts

Currently the roster is sitting at 102 players and that has to be down to 90 by Training Camp.

So 12 players will have to be released in the coming weeks.

Given the churning of the roster that has taken place in the last 18 months since Grigson has taken charge...........are there any holdovers from the previous regime (Brown, Reitz, Ijalana, Linkenbach) that are likely to to be cut still, or some players that the current regime (McGlynn, Hickman, McKinney) that could be cut prior to TC Starting - or after the Rookie Mini-Camp?

What are you thoughts?

Stupid question maybe, and I apologies if it is, but how can they * a player abilities before Training camp starts. I guess I'm referring to some of the UDFAs we signed, would they really cut them before getting a handle on how they play?

Or can we expect them instead to shift some of the dead wood that they have a fair idea of where their ceiling lies.

i hope we keep ijalana and McKinney they're solid players who if they recover could be really productive i also like nigel malone out of our UDFA to replace vaughn who is just garbage and a total joke im also not sold on shipley sjhort arms and cant get to ball to lucks hands when he snaps heis a dissapointment to me and many might disagree but i think holmes slides in at #2 center satele will be excellent if his knee recovers but vaughn mcglynn and shipley bye bye also excited about dan moore maybe get rid of one of our less exsplosive backs although i like most of our running backs

So Technically our roster isn't at 102. We got alot of UDFA's that we just invited to the rookie minicamp here at the beginning of May. From there we only take 90 into Training camp.

I'm not 100% clear on this, but I think there is a reason that you haven't seen the Colts list of UDFA signings in a formal article yet.  The roster cap is limited to 90 already, not just the start of camp.  In year's past, we have had our UDFA's written up formally already.  Today, we have room for 13 since the draft picks aren't signed yet, maybe 14 if McNary doesn't count yet.  Not sure if the league counts the unsigned draft picks against your off-season roster limit or not.

First off, anyone from the Polian era has to be considered a person who could get the boot (just as a general rule).

Secondly, stack up our positions by depth. The players that are in positions that have the most depth should have their head on a swivel.

Thirdly, undrafted Free Agents are always candidates for early retirement.

And of course Donald Brown; as "the greatest player in the history of the franchise" he is always on the bubble....or should be.

You may be onto something there...........we have 102 currently with 7 draft picks and 1 Reserve/Military so that means there are 94 left.  After the Mini Camp there will have to be decisions made as to whether they will cut someone currently on the roster, after they see the UDFA and First Year veterans in the complex to get down to the 90.

It's pretty safe to say that McNary and the 7 draft picks will be a part of that 90 so that leaves 20 players not named McNary, Werner, Thornton, Holmes, Hughes, Williams, Boyett and Justice Cunningham that will have to be let go.  We only 'signed' 18 UDFA, so I think it's a fair guess that there are a few guys feeling the heat right now to not even make it to TC!??!

This article is probably the right way of looking at our UDFA's.  Any UDFAs not on this list is a longer shot to ever get a contract, and 1 of the kickers get's removed when McNary goes live.  Of course, we added and subtracted UDFA's multiple times between the draft and training camp last year.  So, some of that will go on.  Plus, a few of the UDFA's not on this list probably have an understanding that they will get to stay with a contract once we trim others here and there.

Ijalana hasnt had a fair chance he was hurt alot id say give him another shot as for mcglynn id cut him he was horrible last year  Brown he has been a bust idk id give him this year but if not just let him walk  Mckinney is a good DT i wouldnt let him walk

I dunno. I'm thinking McKinney'll be fortunate to survive the first round of cuts. We're stacked with talent at the position and let's be honest, he was brought in as a stop-gap (literally & figuratively). I'm not sure he makes the final 53. We'll see.

Right, I really doubt any of our signed players will be cut before the OTAs or minis. 12 of those UDFAs won't be invited back.

Mckinney is a cab ride to get around, but his problem is he can stack and shed.....but he is limited to a 3-4 foot radius to lunge. Not the kind of lateral movement we need, especially when we play a Shanahan type run game.
