its 20% What were you expecting?

IO was expecting that they would restructure..and get maybe $10 mil..(off of his $21 mil projected 2015 salary)

..pushing that money ahead to a third year that both sides knew s unlikely to happen.

a 'live for today' thing...

...$4 mil (actually $6 off the projected 21) sounds like there's one free agent they have lined up to siogn OR

....Peyton wants Julius Thomas to stay and John Elway said..'help us pay him'

So you were expecting a 50% pay cut? You were just setting yourself up for disappointment.

This would be foolish. Julius is clearly in it for money, and not football. Best let him go, and get someone who will put himself on the line to win.

I agree with you (JT proved unreliable) but some Broncos web sites are saying that Peyton wants Julius to return

They were going totake $10M from 2015 and push it to a year he was never going to play. Aka a $10M pay cut. Call it whatever you want, same principal.

Nope.....push it to 2016 or 2017 when other deals would be restructured (Clady.Ware have 8 figure deals up next year)

There's cap money and cash flow...

Ross Tucker says it could free up $10m in 2015. That would be a pay cut and restructure. We'll see.

This was pointed out to me by someone else via PM, by the way.

If Peyton takes $4M paycut as part of a simple restructure he'll be giving Broncos $10M+ in cap space

That makes more sense. But how do you get a 10 mil savings? Where is the other 6 mil coming from?

He had a 2015 base of 19 mill. We know now it's 15 mill. So they extend his deal another year , which would make it 3 years remaining . Then they turn say 9 mill of the remaining 15 mill 2015 salary into a signing bonus. That's paid to him now and for cap purposes would count 3 mill per year in 2015 , 2016 and 2017. So his hit is reduced by another 6 mill in 2015.

So he is actually getting a raise then.

No he's taking 4 mill less and the Bronco's would be pushing 6 mill into 2016 and 2017. Even if Manning didn't play he is only losing 4 mill. Try this.....

He was due to get 19 mill in 2015. He gets 15 mill instead. So that's a 4 mill pay cut . He losses 4 mill .. pretty much gives it back to Denver. Now they owe him 15 mill for 2015. They pay him like this..

Base salary for 2015 ...6 mill.

New singing bouns of 9 mill and contract extended from ending 2016 to 2017. The base salaries in those years don't mean dog poop as they won't be guaranteed.

So Pm collects 15 mill in 2015 .. the 6 mill base and 9 mill new signing bonus.

Cap for Manning in 2015 is now 9 mill instead of the 19. thus saving 10 mill. But remember that he now as a 3 mill hit to Denvers cap in 2016 and 2017 even if they cut him.

I left out other pro rated bonuses he has hitting Denver's cap and just illustrated how he took 4 mill less and how Denver saved 10 mill against the 2015 cap So if you look up his 2015 cap cost it will be higher than the 9 mill you see above by about 2,5 mill for bonus prorated when they signed him.

So in a nutshell , PM took 4 mill less and Denver pushes 6 mill into future years

If the reports are true it could be a cut and restructure like dw is saying.

They owe him, $40M? Cut that to $36M and push it two the years. That's $12M a season, and $10M almost in cap saving.

Thanks DW49 & Fx. I suck at numbers/ contact fine print stuff so I appreciate your assistance here in that regard.

Off topic: Any update on Manning's thigh injury rehab? Probably not. I just want 18 to end his NFL career on a high note next season. I know I give Peyton a hard time sometimes, but I'd like his swan song to end with a deep playoffs run at a bare minimum.

I do respect his intellect, his humor, & his longevity in this league.

    • And I’m sure frank, trying to be the good little solider in the new job, said “sure, I can work with Young, but I’d rather have Stroud. We all would, in fact”. It would have been a bad look for frank to go in there after just 2 months on the job and say “I can’t make that work” to anything, especially concerning the choice of QB when one of his calling cards was being a QB guru of sorts. He wasn’t going to delegitimize himself to his new boss by vehemently opposing Young. The best he could do was go with the flow and hope for the best because tepper in all his inexperience had already made his mind up based on what the talking heads had filled his ears with for months on end. Frank could have said he wanted to draft Jim Plunkett and tepper would have just nodded, pretending to listen as daydreams of Young danced in his head.    Frank Reich with free will would have taken Stroud over Young every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
    • Yep, definitely not Werner, Turay or Paye. Ian Cummings - Pro Football Network - : "Latu is an impact pass rusher on Day 1, with one of the deepest pass-rushing arsenals in recent memory. And at 6’5?, 265 pounds, he compounds his elite hand usage with similarly exhilarating bend capacity past the arc."
    • If the Colts are thinking of trading up, I think the 2nd is the time to do it. I fully expect the Bills to take Mitchell, but there is still 1st round talent available. The two players I would trade up for are Iowa CB Cooper DeJean and Texas A&M LB Edgerrin Cooper, both players are first round talent. I think DeJean is falling because of his injury and some teams see him as a safety not a CB and Cooper is a LB where it's very rare for teams to take LBs in the first round yet he is one of the best overall players in draft in my opinion. If we can somehow trade up for one of these two players, it would instantly improve our defense and our coverage ability.
    • McConkey is versatile... he can lineup everywhere. I don't think the fit with downs is that big of a problem.
