Makes sense, Panthers have been looking good this year and with Jaycee Horn out for the year, bringing in Gilmore seems like the perfect short term fix

Gilmore isn't playing and they have a strong CB room, not to mention he wanted a new contract which the Patriots weren't gonna give him.

This trade ends the Gilmore talk but I still think adding Jaylon Smith was more likely especially with the Flus connection.

Yep, and he also went to a division rival with 2 games to go against the Bucs. It will be interesting.

I’m not one of those “let’s get …” as soon as a player is available, but Gilmore was low cost - both draft pick and salary.  Not to mention it’s a position of need.

 

We’ve traded with them before, so I have to wonder why we didn’t go after him.  In my mind, he’s a lot more valuable than Smith, who everyone wants.

He's getting paid a ton, wasn't playing and is a FA after the year. The Pats should have held him and let him go as a FA, they would have gotten a 3rd round pick as compensation.

Deforest Buckner would like a word.  I agree with the rest of your post but this part is absolutely not true.  Ballard spends when it's smart to do so.  The rest of the reasons you laid out in your post explain perfectly why spending big on Gilmore would NOT be smart.  it has nothing to do with Ballard being a big spender or not.
