"the Colts completed a three-year, $14 million contract to keep Joseph Addai"

for those of u keeping track that is:

1.67 mil more a yr than ceddy benson

1.16 mil more a yr than darren sproles

2.16 mil more a yr than marion barber

3.93 mil less a yr than deangelo williams

brahshaw just signed so well c how much less he was than addai tomorrow

Compared to all of those guys we got a steal. A score for Polian! I am glad he is on our side.

Jamaal Anderson DE

A 6'6" 290 pound run stopping Defense End works for me. If he's in the game on running downs, Mathis and/or Freeney stay fresher and running becomes more difficult. I'm for anything that makes running on our boys more difficult. His height is an assett too, it is tricky to throw over or around a big wingspan. A batted ball can be a game changer. I think I like this move.

You should be disturbed...at how great of a deal we got. Addai came to us for the perfect dollar amount; especially since he is 100% better in the passing/blocking aspects of the game than anyone on that list. None of those guys would run any better either, given the state of our line (as of last year).

You haven't posted much lately but your post makes more sense than most I have read lately. Sounds like this was a good signing after reading your post. Thanks for the good post.

This seems to be a fantastic pick up, but no one is talking about it.

I'm guessing it's because the average football/Colts fan doesn't know more than a handful of DT names...

This guy could be a 1st down, run-stuffing DE or DT, and a situational guy to bait something out of an offense. He's large, strong, has huge reach, and has a penchant for sniffing out the run.

bigger doesnt always mean better

a lot of DT + DE play revolves around pad level

Yeah, and that wingspan makes it easier for him to capture the attention of more than one offensive lineman freeing up the edge.

This is a good pick up.

http://falcfans.com/scouting-report-jamaal-anderson-2682

"Has good size and has the ability to get leverage vs. the run. Can make the stop at the point of attack. Shows some burst upfield, to press the pocket and make plays in the backfield. Showed more maturity and intensity as the 2009 season wore on. Has a nice motor. Can line up inside or outside."

He hasn't lived up to the expectations of being a 1st round pick and he isn't a strong pass rusher, but he has played DT and is decent at stopping the run, exactly what we need. Good pick up!

We just got a former top 10 pick DT unrestricted free agent coming into his 4th year and no one is freaking out yet?

I am SOOOO pumped up by this! Finally top 10 talent at our DT position!

When is the last time we signed a former top 10 pick other than Dwight or Peyton?

He's definitely a worthy replacement for Muir eh?

Oh? Not exactly what commentators were saying on the radio today. What makes him a bust?

Well, let's see. The colts just signed him, a former 8th overall pick, for probably close to nothing. That doesn't exactly make him a superstar, does it?

That being said I do have faith that he can be a solid run stopper for us.

Colts commentators? They're probably just excited that Colts have signed a free agent, as I am too. I'm just stating the facts, he's a bust, he was drafted #8 overall and did literally nothing for the Falcons. Here's to hoping he gets it kick started here! :dancing:

No, it was the guys on Sirius, they weren't overly high on him, but definitely were not talking in terms of him being a bust.

Well, either way, perhaps there is something there that Polian sees, and our coaches can mentor to success.

According to his Arkansas bio he played DE in high school and college. He played DE for the Falcons too, so that's got me thinking he's a DE first and foremost, although lining up Mathis, Nevis, Anderson & Freeney on a 3rd and 9 makes me smile a bit. :burnout:

From 21issuperman's article, http://falcfans.com/scouting-report-jamaal-anderson-2682:

"Anderson will continue to be a starter at end in their base package. Which means mostly on first and second down (run situations) he’ll play outside at left defensive end. When the Falcons switch to their nickel package, usually on third downs or any other obvious passing situations, Anderson will be part of the mix and kick inside. He is a more effective pass rusher when he lines up inside since he is typically facing a less athletic blocker in an NFL guard. But he still isn’t a guy that is going to record many sacks."

That's how the Colts will most likely use him as well.

One mans trash is another mans treasure, ain't that what they say?

I know nothing about this guy. Have to wait to see for myself but I suppose I'll trust Polian on this one.

I think he'd be better suited playing DT and adding some bulk this offseason and he'd be a great DT. If he moved him he'd have good speed at the position since he was playing DE as a pass rusher, and adding a bit more bulk would help plug up the middle. I think its a good pick up and hopefully he can help out in the middle. Now if only we could get some linebackers.

I have been reading that he is good against the run, so maybe he can clog up the middle if we use him as a DT, which is what we need. He can't be any worse than Dawson. I'm willing to give any unknown DT a chance... I'm that desperate for DL talent.

I can see that working...I have a friend that is a big Falcons fan...I am going to see what I can find out about him.

I'm not sure how no one is talking about it, there were 2 or three threads about it yesterday. It's not all that exciting because he's considered a bust in Atlanta. He has excellent size but he's not that strong and I'm not sure where a penchant for sniffing out the run came from. He's was drafted to be a pass rushing specialist who has 4.5 sacks in 4 years.

I think he will be a pass rushing DT and in certain situations be that "power" end that Coyer likes.

Addai is better and less trouble than Benson.

Sproles is nothing more than a 3rd down back...Addai can do what he does AND play every down

Marion the Barbarian is broken down and close to being done.

Deangelo Williams deserved the money he got. Glad he showed loyalty to the Panthers

Bradshaw can't seem to hold on to the ball right now, anyway. Addai doesn't fumble often.

For the price, knowing what kind of team we are, I'd take Addai with his contract over any of these.

As for the topic...Hopefully we can make this guy work out. Could be the answer for some of the problems on defense if we can unlock his potential.

I always get this confused guys so please straighten me out. The article quoted above says he will be "left defensive end" on running situations. Which position is left defensive end? I can't remember if the perception of left is from the linebacker's perspective or the opposing QB's perspective. In other words, will he sub in for Mathis or Freeney? I'm excited either way, but I'm just looking forward to what I will be seeing in the pre-season opener in a few days.
