Self inflicted wounds hurt the most...

Two of our last six picks have been backup wide receivers plus Johnson and Carter in FA.  Last year with only 5 picks we took one for the future.  Now we have another with our first pick.  One of my best buds is a New England fan (we have issues sometimes) and he wanted a wide out but then said "Belichick is too smart to waste picks on wideouts."  Then I watch as we take our 9th receiver and New England goes Bonkers over the 12th BPA going to the Super Bowl Champ which just happened to be our position of need.  Yes, Dorsett is a burner, we'll get to see how fast he can get back and forth to the water cooler because he nor Moncreif are even starters.  Maybe we can watch them race each other on the sidelines, Yea!  Grigson better pull the world's biggest 'WOW' the next two days for Defense.  Brown, Collins, Kendricks, Goldman, Gregory........Brady won a SuperBowl with incredibly average wide receivers and just ran the ball down our "monster" throat.

Definitely a lot of truth here. I'm not mad about the player, I'm mad they decided to go with that position in general. I don't want to pretend to know much about evaluating DTs, but when the patriots get Malcom Brown (who was rated a top 15 player by many) 3 picks later, it does hurt a little bit....

This is exactly the problem.  In the first round you usually want to get a difference maker.  What kind of difference is this guy going to make riding the bench?

He and Moncrief both of whom may be way too good to be #3 receivers on most teams are going to battle it out for the #3 receiver spot which isn't even going to be all that important when you consider that we have Fleener and Allen and we pretty much use Fleener as our #3 guy anyways while Allen plays the more traditional TE role.

And given that Moncrief has a year on the guy we just spend a first round pick on a guy who's going to be the #6 option in the passing game.

It feels like Grigson is more interested in helping Luck set records then winning football games.  And even then it doesn't make a lot of sense.  You can only put so many receivers on the field.

It's hilarious people still don't understand that a great QB can make average WR's look like Pro Bowlers.  Look at Russell Wilson (not trying to start a different debate).  He has a GREAT defense, but average WR's.  He's been to 2 Super Bowls.  (Not trying to start a different debate) Manning has been to 2 Super Bowls and only won 1 just like Wilson (in Indy), but the model of the team are very different.  Manning had a prolific offense and a much to be desired defense .  Similar to what management is building around Luck.  Patriots,Steelers, and Giants have a similar model and it's funny they all have won multiple SB's in the last 15 years?  Coincidence?  I think NOT!!

It's funny that you guys actually think we were deep at receiver going into last night. First things first, I don't think Duron Carter's making this roster, I hate to break it to ya, but the hype on this guy in this forum is out of control. He'll get a lot of preseason reps with the backups, and if he's productive (big IF), he'll either be trade bait or a practice squad guy, that's about it. Griff Whalen is useless, will almost certainly be cut, and if not, he'll just be a practice squad player as well. Andre Johnson might still have some fumes in the tank, but I'd be surprised if he's on the team after this season to be honest. And oh yeah, Reggie Wayne's gone.

So we're left with TY Hilton and Donte Moncrief. The addition of Dorsett makes this a very dangerous trio. I don't see the problem with this pick, especially considering there are still 8 more.

To me there is an awful lot of Hubris around "we stick to our board" so should we go WR witht he second pick too if he's best available or just QB if Petty is still there?

This is a silly post.  Name Brady's 6 receivers, did the Pack go wide out because those two teams need wide outs....NOPE.  Only us a WR rich team with three receiving tight ends (Fleener, Allen and Swoopes) and  Johnson, Cribbs, Hilton, Carter. Whalen and Moncreif.  Dorsett makes 10...TEN!!!!  And you don't think we have depth???  Could you show me an example of what depth looks like to you?  Then show me that depth at NT, S, OT and DT and I may concede the point.

Our receiver depth (I'm talking LEGIT depth, not just some names on a piece of paper), prior to last night, started with Hilton, and ends with Moncrief. Sure we have Johnson, for this year, but we all know how old he is and that there aren't any guarantees after this season.

A former college basketball player who's never played football, a CFL project who's only in the league because of who his dad is, an error-prone fumble machine KR/PR specialist, a 34 year old veteran, and a practice squad guy does not constitute good wide receiver depth. That's just my opinion though. Maybe they're the greatest group ever assembled, I kind of doubt it though.

And all those positions you named on defense, are still available in the draft. Last night was the first round of the draft, and Grigson has 8 picks left. So what's your beef?

Including Swoope is a complete joke. He's taken about 7 total snaps in the 4th QT of preseason games. He is still learning and if he still shows potential, he will stick around on the PS at worst. Dorsett has no bearing on Swoope.

Cribbs is trash we all wanted gone, Griff is just a guy, Carter is an unknown.

I understand you're trying to make a point and God knows I was baffled by the pick (I yelled "Whyyyyyy?" at the TV about 50 times), but Dorsett is no where near the 10th guy. Half of that group won't be on the final roster.

Just so I'm super clear, you discount Andre Johnson as a legit player this year?  Two tights ends and very serviceable backups....yeah, pencil me super duper (no pun intended) with that depth chart, I'm even ok with Whalen all things considered.  Next if this is so flimsy, name me one team with better depth in their receiving core.....don't waste your time, there isn't one.  As our own Reggie Wayne said "this is by far the most talented group of receivers I've ever been around" and that was prior to Cribbs (who was a pro bowler) and Andre who's just a Hall of Fame guy you seem to completely discount.  Heck, if you take that line of thought why in the world did we sign that guy!!!!  My beef don't flirt with disaster and don't be such a troll to your own board that you can't apply 'need' logic to it.  Are you ok with 2 of our last 6 picks going to back up wide outs while signing Johnson and Carter to FA contracts while having one starting safety, no depth at ILB (did you see the kid from Clemson that was available) and a problem getting run over by NE while guy like Brown go by....that's my beef brother.

yeah I'm just shocked by how many actually like this pick. Its like you said we literally just spent a 1st rounder on a 4th string/3rd string WR. Like I said to superman in another thread you would think you would like to have your 1st round pick actually be able to help us as a rookie.

He's not the 10th in quantity, though. Half of that group wouldn't have made it through preseason regardless of Dorsett.

You may as well have added Kadron Boone, Vincent Brown, Josh Lenz, and Ryan Langford to your list (nobodies/has beens). Guys who had little to no shot making the squad before Dorsett. Now Dorsett makes 14!!!!!

great point I haven't seen brought up since wee took Dorsett. When you have a QB like Luck you don't take WRs in the 1st round especially in a deep as hell WR class

I'm not discounting Andre Johnson, I'm just being realistic, as we all know he's in the twilight of his career. I see him being productive next year, but after that is a huge question mark.

And by the way we do have 2 starting safeties in Mike Adams and Dwight Lowery, while that's not enough, it could be a lot worse. And as far as being a troll, I think I'm being pretty sensible and even-keeled. I'm not the one on the board throwing temper-tantrums because I didn't get what I wanted with the first-round pick, which admittedly puts me in the minority.

RBs will always be on the field (just about) and don't effect WRs/TEs playing time, so you can throw out Gore.

But, like I said, I certainly was not happy with the pick. I was yelling for defensive line and safety with everyone else, but Dorsett is young with all the talent in the world. If he turns into a good WR, he will contribute to this team not just this year but for years to come. We all want immediate satisfaction at the "need" positions but sometimes you have to look at the full picture and realize these guys will impact your team for more than one year and sometimes the best players for the long term might not fill the biggest immediate "need" positions. Plus, there are still 8 more picks, I know nobody wants to hear it but it's true and we have seen very good players come from the 2nd on.

In all fairness, Andre is older than all of those guys, and there are still 8 more picks to go. So I apologize if I'm not as angry about the pick as the forum thinks I should be. But I prefer to wait until the draft is over before I form an opinion, rather than fly off the handle because we took a guy who will immediately contribute.

moncrief was basically the fourth wr last year too(less targets slightly more yards than nicks) thats not a bad role for a late third round pick.  fleener and allen play different roles anyway we dont need them on the field at the same time.  allen is the blocking TE and redzone receiver, fleener is the receiving te in the open field.

everyone agrees that dorsett is excess or luxury, but the same was true for reggie wayne when he was drafted.

you dont know that. our top three receivers next year could all be WRs.  i can see the ranking being

1. ty

2. AJ

3. dorsett

4. fleener

5- everyone else in role player positions

When Reggie was picked we didn't have a legit number 2 and we wanted a larger guy opposite Marvin...VERY different.  Oh well....I'm too invested in it.

Is it? Hilton and Dorsett are small and scrawny. Moncrief showed promise as #3, TY still hasn't proven in big time situation as THE goto #1. Just food for thought.

yes we did, and reggie was hardly any bigger and didnt contribute much until his second and third years.  it was a very similar situation where everyone wanted defense but the value wasnt there so we took the best wr on the teams board.

The fact that you exaggerated your list with nobodies/fringe players in order to make the pick seem even worse? Yes, it is exactly the point.

Tell me about our amazing depth at other positions since we are so woefully inadequate with our pro bowlers and hall of fame guy.  You like us big time at S, MLB, RT, rush edge...no you're right, we're marginal at WR, we should get another in round two.

Nope, now you're missing the point. Try reading my other responses. Phillip Dorsett wouldn't have been my first, second, or third choice but neither would have Reggie Wayne in 2001. Most people around here were also pretty happy with Bjoern Werner 2 years ago because he filled a need and he was at one point considered a top 10 pick (even top 5), that turned out well. Right?

Dorsett may not seem like a great pick right now because of other glaring needs but; 1) the team has 8 more picks 2) Just because you draft a position of need player who is highly touted in the first round does not mean he will automagically succeed (see Bjoern Werner, see hundreds of other examples).

Werner was another example of a horrible first round pick, on that we agree.  Werner wasn't even a scheme fit after they came in and cleaned house in the name of running a new scheme. Nothing about that pick made sense, little about this pick makes sense but the kid is fast I grant you that.  I look at last years draft and this years draft, stockpiling wide receivers is madness. We had a meager 5 picks last year and opted for a back up WR that we took because he would have been first round talent this year.  Then we spend a first-round pick this year on another WR....I'm a bit too logical perhaps which is why Grigson is driving me mad.  Letting your pick rest on whatever name rests on top of your board is lunacy without reason. Be sure to watch the press conference.  So, don't put words in my mouth with Werner, there's plenty of talent available at our pick as apparently you agree.  I like your "glaring needs" comment, indeed true, welcome to the light.  The next eight picks will apparently be a product of whatever happens to be on top of the pile.  Perhaps a kicker?  P.S.  We needed a second receiver in 2001 opposite Marvin, it was a widely known desire.

So just to be clear, you didn't like the pick?

    • Does the same dynamic and conflict exist when it's a positive report, based on unnamed sources?    What if a reporter just generalizes this information, without offering quotes? 'People I've talked to have concerns about this player's maturity...' Is the standard the same in that case?   I think if media didn't share these anonymous insights, the stuff we love to consume during draft season would dry up, and we'd be in the dark. There's a voracious appetite for this kind of information. That doesn't mean the media has no responsibility and shouldn't be held to some kind of standard, but I think your standard is more strict than it needs to be. JMO.   To the bolded, I think that's the job of the scouts, and it's one of the reasons there's a HUGE difference between watching video, and actually scouting. That's why teams who have access to film and independent scouting reports still pay their own scouts to go into the schools, talk to the coaches, talk to family and friends, etc., and write up in-depth reports on players that they'll likely never draft. I'm confident the Colts got sufficient answers to those questions, which is why I'm not concerned about it. If the Colts didn't have a reputation for being so thorough with stuff like this, I might feel differently.
    • Not sure. To me a lot of those (not just about AD) read very gross and icky, especially coming from people who have things to gain from perpetuating a narrative. IMO unless it's factually supported, you probably shouldn't print it(this is specifically about character/attitude things... things that we cannot see with our own eyes on the field - about those... go wild... print whatever you want, unless you are concerned with looking foolish). Or at the very least you should make everything possible to corroborate it with people who are close to the situation - for example, your anonymous scout tells you AD Mitchell is uncoachable. You do NOT print this unless a coach who has worked with him confirms it. Your anonymous scout tells you that when AD Mitchell is not taking care of his blood sugar levels, he's hard to work with. OK, this seems reasonable enough. But does it give an accurate picture of what it is like to work with Mitchell? In other words - how often does that actually happen? Because Mitchell's interview with Destin seems to suggest that he's been taking the necessary measures to control his blood sugar levels. Did it happen like once or twice in the span of 3 years in college? Or is it happening every second practice? Because when you write it like McGinn wrote it and then suggest that he's uncoachable, what's the picture that comes to your head? And the fact that your scout also told you "but when his blood sugar is ok, he's great", doesn't really do anything to balance the story here.
    • Got it. But what do you think should be done about this?
    • I mean that anonymous scouts and anonymous execs work for some team in the league. Those teams have interests very separate from the interests of the reporters giving them platform...
    • ope, well without any of @AKB post this thread seems silly.
