No because you can't contractually obligate someone to commit a crime.  Any contract of that sort is null and void by legal definition.

 

However talking to the media isn't a crime.

The man is supposed to be a professional. Dealing with the media is part of a player's job, because that helps make the league money, which makes the owners money, which makes the players money. It should be about professional courtesy, not a ridiculous display of defiance. Just give boring answers like Belichick, unless it has to do with deflated footballs, and they will go away.

No I agree that talking to the media is not a crime but forcing someone to talk is unethical at least. Players who sign contracts with that language do it to themselves. The NFL is going a little overboard with fines for shoes, socks, and conversation and fines for them are on par with cheating whether it be steroids, aderal, or video taping. I think they have it all backwards. When you think about it criminals have the right to be silent but football players dont

I don't know if it's unethical, I would just say it's unnecessary.

 

The biggest problem I see is that not every guy can get up and formulate a nice PC answer for every question.  If you know you arn't that guy then you are sort of put in a bind.  Don't speak you get fined, speak and say something not PC and you get fined or worse.

If you wanna act like a football player in the 1950's then you should get paid 8K a week like a football player in the 1950's. The media has helped grow the sport over life of it and every player is legally obligated to speak to the media to continue this cycle but he just wants to thumb his nose at the rules and grab his crotch at the refs. He's the wannabe stone cold steve austin and it's getting old. That being said if he wants to be a jerk then he can be, but I wish the media would stop saying "LOL listen to what lynch said/didn't say this time!"

You have to have rules because you have Belichick and Brady doing crazy stuff with the rules in place already. No rules, you have anarchy. The league, owners, and players get paid for uniform endorsements to companies, and that these companies paid for the players to wear a certain brand. It business , and these guys as paid professionals should understand this.

Yeah those obligations are part of it and I think they get paid enough for it. Just do it- its no big deal.

IMO he is being a disrespectful punk and should be fined for behavior unbecoming in fact since he is a multiple time offender the penalty should be escalated - suspend him without pay if that doesn't work send him walking!

I've noticed many reporters asking really stupid questions ("you just won the Super Bowl, how does it feel?").  If I were being interviewed, I would give very direct answers.  How does it feel?  Good.  Stupid questions deserve stupid answers.  But "I'm only here because I won't get fined" is a stupid response to every question that was asked of him.  Be smart with what you say and you won't run into trouble with them twisting your words
