Hybrid players in 2014 draft

Recommended Posts

Cato June was a former safety at Michigan, who played LB for the Colts.

Kam Chancellor is a safety in a linebacker's body, it looks like.

Dontae Johnson in the 2014 draft class is a cornerback in a free safety body, it looks like.

Who are your best players that you think are versatile/good enough to play different positions than what they played in college from this 2014 draft? What rounds? Who do you like best for the Colts?

Discuss.

I don't like this guy for us, but I believe Telvin Smith could transition to strong safety. He's 6'3 218 and has good athleticism.

I was thinking of Prince Shembo and Christian Jones. I do believe both of them have some usage in 3-4 Ds too.

Kevin Pierre Louis of Boston College, he fits coverage LB to a tee because he is not built for all down defense in a 3-4. If, for some reason, 4-3 teams pass on him and if he is there in round 6, I would not mind someone that late in a specialist role.

What about Denicos Allen?  He's a LB, but he's pretty small (5'11", 218 lbs).  I'm not sure how fast he runs or how well he moves, but I really like him.  He comes across as a natural football player in that he makes plays despite his size.  I would love to get him in the 7th round or an undrafted rookie

Telvin Smith is a guy that's intrigued me for a while. I think he's athletic enough, and has good enough coverage and tackling skills to play Safety in the NFL. It'll just depend on what the team that drafts him wants from him.

I wouldn't mind him as a later round pick. Either you get him to bulk up and play ILB (especially on passing downs) or transition to safety. Its a bit ballsy, but could really pay off for not a huge cost.

Another guy is Carl Bradford. He's an OLB who I think will move to ILB in the NFL. I also agree with Kjyb on McGill. I actually see McGill moving to FS. I wouldn't mind if we drafted him to play safety.

I wouldn't mind trying McGill at free safety either but it might be expensive with a 3rd round pick without a 4th round pick.

Bradford at ILB? Not at all. Not sure what you see in him that projects to ILB. He's a pass rusher with some versatility. To me, he's a Sam backer in our scheme.

He lacks size, speed, and athleticism to play OLB in the NFL in my opinion. He has short arms, so he struggles to shed blocks at times. You never know though. He could make it at OLB, a lot depends on who drafts him.

Agree about the Sam backer bit, but I don't think he'd be a very strong pass rusher.  Not initially at least.  Has a tough time getting off blocks and needs to really improve his pass rush moves.  He could develop into a good pass rusher though, even though he is limited by his length (which isn't to say he is doomed to be an average pass rusher).  I dol ike his explosiveness though, which gives me hope that he could be a decent pass rusher.

He's a straight-line pass rusher, not a lot of wiggle. But he can get around blockers, and can shed TEs. He's no Robert Mathis, but he'd be better than Walden as a pass Rusher. That's fine at Sam, but would be a problem at Rush. I definitely don't see him as an ILB, though.

I feel the same way about him not being an ILB.  He'd get so burned in coverage it's not even funny.  And yeah, straight line rusher, absolutely.  I think he could develop into a nice pass rusher with a good repertoire over time, possibly taking over full sam duties in the last year or two of Walden's contract, giving us the latitude to cut him if necessary.
