Will Robert Mathis be a hall of famer?

He should honestly. But he has been overshadowed by Freeney, and even when he's the most valuable defender in the league and leads in sacks nobody speaks about him at all. So sadly he could get screwed.

that's not even a little bit true.  His name was involved in every discussion I watched or listened to about DPOY.  He was one of the finalists for the award, he just didn't win it.

If you look at the list of all time sack leaders Mathis is 20 & Freeney 22... Of the 22 top sack leaders 9 are HOFrs... also in that list are 7 players that are still active or not yet eligible for the HOF & another that just became eligible this offseason, so that only leaves 5 retired players in the top 22 sack leaders not yet in the HOF...

Assuming Mathis can play at a high level for another couple of seasons, assuming he passes Abraham for career forced fumbles, and assuming he gets another pro-bowl or two, (and another ring next year!!!) Mathis should have a very realistic shot at being a HOF candidate...

at least that's the way I see it...

Once again, I think you forget that those in the Hall were also good against the run. Freeney and Mathis were never good against the run, they just rushed the passer on every play..... Very one dimensional and I don't think either one gets in no matter how many sacks they end up with.

He is the all-time leader in strip sacks -- so in some ways you can say he 'revolutionized' the game.  He will need to have 2 more years with 15+ sacks or 3 more years with 10+ sacks to get in, IMO.  It used to be that 100 sacks was the 'magic number' to be considered for the HOF, but with the way the game has changed that is different (we are seeing the same game changes affect WR's and soon will affect QB's -- putting up gaudy numbers in a pass-first league doesn't have as much merit as it used to).  I think now around 140 is the 'magic number' for consideration, especially for pass-rush specialists.

In some ways, Mathis' career reminds me of Simeon Rice's and Simeon is not in the hall (at least not yet).  Simeon was undoubtedly elite for his first 10 seasons, then he had a major drop-off -- Michael Strahan did not have at any point in time as good of a 10 year run as Simeon, but he broke the sack record during his best years during towards the end of his career. Mathis has a chance to go out in a similar fashion as Strahan (may not break the sack record, but a few monster seasons like last year towards the end is ridiculous nonetheless).

Another couple all-pro years, another superbowl ring, and a lot more forced fumbles and I think Mathis is a lock.  If his production declines dramatically over the next couple seasons, I think he's on the outside looking in.

A few areas where Mathis has an advantage over Freeney are:  (1) he seems to be improving as years go by, whereas Freeney has seen major declines in production towards the end of his career, (2) Mathis has excelled in 2 totally different schemes, whereas Freeney couldn't make the transition from 4-3 to 3-4, (3) Mathis, although not great against the run, is much more of an every down player (especially now that he is switched to LB) than Freeney was, and (4) Mathis never got the injury bug as bad as Dwight had it.

    • Richard….    JVan and I aren’t agreeing on much recently, but on this issue I believe he’s right.   But there’s more….      I believe as the story goes Ballard shared that Morocco Brown and other scouts were confident that Smith could play RT effectively.  Ballard was worried because Smiths arms are very short at 32 1/4 when Ballard wants at least 33 1/2 if not more.  So Brown and the scouts convinced Ballard Smith was athletic enough to do the job.    And they been right.
    • maybe not a starter but I think dulin will be a pleasant surprise this season
    • All of the following is my opinion…. I think 2024 is the last year for Ryan Kelly and then Bortolini takes over in 25.      I think Smiths last year is 2025, and I think the Colts will draft a RT to replace Smith in 25 and the kid will start for the Colts in 26.      I think Goncalves might take over at RG for Fries, but almost no one realize Fries graded in the top 40 percent of all guards, so there will be good competition at the spot.     I think the Colts are using the next few years to rebuild the Colts offensive line for the near future…
    • Once again showing your ignorance .  Just like in your Peyton vs Brady arguments.   Russell and his fellow Celtics were clearly the best basketball team of the 50s/60s.   if that’s the case (and try following the logic), that would stand to mean that if they had the same advantages as those 80’s teams had in terms of training, true professional training facilities, etc, then they would have just been just as good as any 80’s team.   It’s the same when young people today say that Magic/Larry, etc, would have no shot against kids who have played AAU and been groomed since 10 years old.  Of course they would have, given the same opportunities.
    • Two players make a championship team?  Two small forwards, in fact? again, you’re showing your basketball ignorance.
