Get your pass rushers early

I am curious to see how many pass rushers are positioned as first round talent.

Most draft pundits tend to think Bradley Chubb and Arden Key both are blue chip pass rushers. To me both have their flaws, Chubb is probably only fits in a 4-3 and Key has injury and motor issues but should probably test really well. After that it drops considerably.

Sorry I should specify.  Once the combine and pro days conclude...I wonder who they have as top talent and 1st round prospects.  This will be when you see some completely different names jumping up the board, and have others Noah Spence as example, dropping down.  Not a huge fan of Walter Football as many others aren't either.

Arden Key might have some off the field issues and he will have to answer a lot of questions about that and his love for the game and getting better.  Injury issues are non-existent.  One shoulder injury does not consider him injury prone or having any injury issues in my book.  By draft day he will have a lot of questions answered.

Chubb is a player who fits the mold of DE in the 4-3 scheme.  After we see him test in stand up drills as an OLB rush guy you will again have a lot of questions answered.  He will be good but spending an early 1st rounder on someone, you need to be dynamic.

I get you, combine will tell where guys will really fall. I don't care for Walter football either but those were the only links I could provide that aren't behind a paywall right now like the ESPN draft coverage is. Key also just missed several games with a broken hand or finger so he hasn't played much this year at all despite having a big 2016.

I will also say a guy I feel like might move into the top of this list is Clelin Ferrell from Clemson.  Big body at 6'5" 260 pounds.  He has a great motor and creates a lot of issues for the other team.  Now he has a lot of talent around him but I think he tests well.  Just a guy to put on the radar anyways.

Yea i get that, I do not pay for ESPN crap either.  Key, I believe will prove to be a top pick after the process.  If he falls it will be purely due to interviews.

Yes, I do like his motor and bend. Lot of pass rushers get washed up against the run, this guy seems to have more to him. If we decide to drop down just a few spots and still remain in the Top 10, I would not be upset with him.

However, Quenton Nelson might be the most sure thing for a prospect, IMO. I would be thrilled if we get him in the Top 10 as well.

I have no complaints with Nelson at all.  To me he is a future pro bowler and all-pro.

A guy who might be more in play for us in the third round or so who - Ogbonnia Okoronkwo of Oklahoma. He's a smaller edge rusher, more in the mold of a Robert Mathis than a Joey Bosa. If he tests out decently at the combine (which I believe is actually somewhat important as a pass rusher) I'd be all aboard taking him in the early 3rd at least. A lot of teams won't like his lack of size (expect him to measure just over 6 foot and around 240 lbs). This makes him a better fit for a 3-4 base defense like ours.

I wouldn’t touch a pass rusher that small. Guys like Mathis and Dumerville are rare exceptions to the rule. There are more Khalil Mack’s then there are Robert Mathis’. About 2 years ago there was a guy just like Okoronkwo, and he went to the same school. His name was Eric Striker. Some people had him as a 1st round pick as an edge rusher (and he had decent production too). Then he measured in at 6’0” at the combine and I couldn’t even tell you what’s happened to him, only that he isn’t tearing the league up.

Comment? (if you guys want we can turn this one into a general thread to discuss the passrushers in this draft)

I would be thrilled if Ballard backed up his talk and built the trenches with a play-maker on either Line with our 1st rd pick.  And 2nd, and 3rd, and...

Whether it's an edge-rusher, a good interior pass-rushing DLineman, or a solid OLineman like G Quenton Nelson.

The defensive picks kind of depend on who is going to be the coach and what defensive scheme we will be running next year, whereas a G like Nelson will probably be All-Pro in almost any offensive scheme.

And he was only like 215lbs... He was a heckuva college player though

If this is now the pass rusher thread, I like unchenna Nwosu from USC in the 3rd/4th Round.

Yeah, he's been very productive in all areas but sacks. I'm not sure what this is due, but he's been impressive in the several USC games I've seen.

Here's another one to pay attention to - a small school prospect Marcus Davenport from UTSA. I cannot find a lot of film on him but I've been hearing draftniks swoon over him. Here are some highlights:

It's real early but so far after a couple small glances I've liked the way this guy moves

Kansas_logo.gif Dorance Armstrong Jr.*, 3-4OLB, Kansas
Height: 6-4. Weight: 241.
Projected 40 Time: 4.60.
Projected Round (2018): 1-2.

11/18/17: In 2017, Armstrong has 53 tackles with eight for a loss, one sack, three forced fumbles and a pass batted. Sources have said they continue to be impressed by Armstrong. He is a fast edge defender with very good athleticism. He also sees lots of double teams with plays going away from him.

    • I thought someone might ask "who" I would want him to swing for the fences for.....and its tough to explain, but I will try. I would have loved Marv Jr. for nostalgia but knew that was unrealistic at any cost.....Liked the idea of Brock Bowers, etc. but its not really "WHO" for me, it was the effort, risk it....and this applies to FA as well. Go out on a limb for a difference maker, I think they are more qualified to determine "who" that is than I.....and maybe there wasn't one. but over the last 7 or 8 years there have been opportunities in FA and draft. So maybe my disappointment is more cumulative than this instance specific......Dunno if that makes sense, he has played it safe for years and does well with what he has had, guess I am saying (my opinion) at some point you gotta say "I am pushing all in" for this player as we need that over the top player now......and he never seems to reach that boiling point.
    • Nice to see you so positive Doug. I like the pick as well the more I think about it. Hopefully we have our QB in AR, our RT in Raimann, and now our Edge in Latu + Buckner is still All-Pro worthy on the D.Line. Pittman is a good possession WR but I still wish we had a legit deep threat to really open things up at WR. I guess if Taylor runs the ball at a pro-bowl level it could open things up more, hopefully Nelson stays healthy. I do like Downs a lot. Pierce to me, is on a prove it to me level.
    • This is how I feel as well. It’s frustrating to see other teams in our division build around their young QB and we’re left watching. Seems like a broken record but year after year we enter the draft with SO many holes. The Texans basically went worst to first and will even be better this year with the moves they made. At some point I hope we can get out of the mud. AR needs another weapon and sadly the ones that could make an immediate impact are gone.
    • I think Latu is exactly that kind of player, who is said to be the most special edge rusher in the draft. Only concern with him was neck injury, but he recovered from that 2 years ago and his awesome tape shows the kind of special player, far from injury concerns. Without that injury history, he'd have been top-10, if not top-5, player in this draft easily.    So, what more swing-for-fences move you refer to? Which player did you have in mind?
