PFF Scores week 8

Solid84

Recommended Posts

I'm not going to be posting any grades save maybe just a few on stand-out players.

I'll try to rank grades as follows:

  • Elite 90+
  • Great 80-89
  • Good 70-79
  • Above Average 65-69
  • Average 56-64
  • Below Average 50-55
  • Bad <50

For reference the baseline grade is 60.0 - the average. To make it easier for me I've made some PFF-grade intervals for each of the above categories (see above). Fewer grades under average because once you get into that area under "Below average" there's not much point in grading it - it's just not good enough.

Stand-out performances week 8:

These are premium grades. I'll post links to where they can be found. If you find these PFF grades as interesting as me I highly recommend you subscribe. Trying a new format for this part of the write up.

DeForest Buckner - Overall 87.1 - 51 total snaps (27 Rdef, 24 Prsh) - No penalties. (Defense)

-- Run defense - 61.7

-- Tackling - 69.6 - No missed tackles, 1 Tackle, 1 Assist, 1 Stop, 1 Forced Fumble.

-- Passrush - 91.4 - 1 Sack, 1 Hurry.

Bernhard Raimann - Overall 79.5 - 71 total snaps - No penalties. (Blocking)

-- Pass blocking - 80.3 - 2 Hits, 1 Hurry.

-- Run blocking - 74.7

Kwity Paye - Overall 76.3 - 50 total snaps (28 Rdef, 22Prsh) - No penalties. (Defense)

-- Run defense - 77.5

-- Tackling - 75.4 - No missed tackles, 6 Tackles, 2 Stops.

-- Passrush - 60.9 - No Sacks, Hits or Hurries.

Josh Downs - Overall 73.2 - 57 total snaps (39 Rec, 18 Rblk) - 1 penalty. (OffenseReceivingBlocking)

-- Receiving - 74.4 - 7/9 targets caught for 72 yards, ADOT 7.3, YAC/REC 4.0, 0/2 contested targets caught, No missed tackles forced.

-- Drops - 75.6

-- Fumbles - 69.5

-- Run blocking - 62.5

Buckner had his 2nd best game of the season. Run defense has been his weak point the entire season, but I guess that's more Stewart's job anyway. Paye had his best overall game of the season. Passrush had been his weak point this season - he's more of an edge-setter. Raimann bounced back with his back overall game of the season after his worst performance yet last week. Just a solid player. Josh Downs had another good game - our best overall WR this season.

Comments on grades for Offense, Defense and ST, week 8

Seeing as the cats out of the bag on week 1-3 grades (my bad), I'll keep them here and make comments on week 7.

Offense -  (week3/week2/week 1)

(55.2/74.7/53.1) - Overall Offense

  • Week 8 - Above Average. New 3rd best week for our offense after the Texans and Titans games. Minshew didn't turn the ball over as much and that upped the overall performance by the Offense.

(49.3/80.6/49.2) - Passing

  • Week 8 - Average. A lot better than week 6 and 7, but still only average. The offense stumbles, when the run game is shut down.

(65.3/70.9/68.3) - Pass blocking

  • Week 8 - Above Average. Overall a respectable Pass blocking performance.

(62.3/63.2/57.1) - Reciever routes

  • Week 8 - Average. Downs had another good game. The rest of the WRs didn't help raise the score.

(61.4/67.4/38.8) - Run game

  • Week 8 - Above Average. 2nd best game of the season only behind last weeks Browns game.

(45.4/82.9/62.3) - Run blocking

  • Week 8 - Above Average. Decent Run blocking.

Okay offensive performance this week.

Defense - (week3/week2/week 1)

(57.7/62.3/78.9) - Overall Defense

  • Week 8 - Below Average. Barely manages a Below Average grade this week. Just a meltdown by the Coverage and the Run defense.

(43.1/74.4/83.4) - Run defense

  • Week 8 - Bad. Just bad. Guess that's just the grade when you allow 3 rushing TDs. Not really a surprise.

(39.0/51.8/66.4) - Tackling

  • Week 8 - Above Average. Best Tackling of the season. Only rivaled by week 1. All other weeks have been pretty poor.

(67.4/72.5/73.3) - Passrush

  • Week 8 - Good. Best Passrush of the season. Last week halted a downward trajectory and this week we have the best Passrush of the season even if we didn't have a lot of sacks. Hope it continues to improve and ends up resulting in more sacks and turnovers.

(62.1/50.0/66.2) - Coverage

  • Week 8 - Bad. Worst of the season. I think Brown single-handedly dumped this grade this week.

Worst overall defensive performance of the season. This has to improve.

Special Teams - (week3/week2/week 1)

(54.7/69.8/78.3) - Special Teams

  • Week 8 - Good. Just a good week for the STs.

A few stand-outs, but overall pretty average. At least Minshew didn't crap the bed this game. Nelson, Kelly and Freeland all had poor Pass blocking performances. Downs had another good game - he's graded out as our best WR so far this season. Besides Ogletree's huge TD the TEs had a pretty forgetable game. I feel both Moss and JT had good games, both with a big run.

Good work. Has we ready to see the new upgraded season grades tomorrow.

Will Raimann get back in the top 10

How far will Leonard separate himself from the other LBs, was already grading out as the best, a good performance should put some distance between them.

Can Paye get back up there to a respectable rank? Ebukam has been graded pretty high al year.(hovering around top 20)

Lewis had been playing good ball, grading out in the top 30-40 range coming into this week.

Cox was already grading out in top 20. Added another solid performance. Looks like Ogletree might drop a little(been top 10 TE for a few weeks.

I’ve been noticing the past few weeks that Shaq has been having solid quiet games.  Maybe not worth his contract yet but it does lend hope to the idea he’s still trying to round back into form.

I think he's working his way back, but still no where near where he once was.  Definitely not a $20M LB.  I hope he improves.

Too bad we don't have coaching decision grades.  Not using Taylor in the second half gives Shane a D.  Not benching Brown gives Gus an F.

Thanks for putting together the long OP.

Raimann, Kelly, Downs,Moss, and Taylor seem to be our most consistent players.  Disappointing that jt can’t get his receiving and pass blocking grades up

i wish Payes grade could be based more on sacks and hurries than edge setting.

not much to say about the other defensive players.

Can someone please explain this to me?  Our overall run defense rated as BAD, yet nearly all of our defensive linemen had ABOVE AVERAGE run defense?

I think it's mainly down to a couple of really bad plays that dings the defense hard. They had 3 rushing TDs for instance.

I hate that DeFo is basically wasted on these crap D's because he's really a great player.

He never misses time and always brings his A game.

Hopefully he can last a few more years because he'll be 30 next year.

Each week PFF has some headscratching scores, but this week there are several. The pass rushing scores especially. Except for 2-3 plays, seems like Carr had all day to throw.

Carr’s time to throw was 2.29 in week 8. His average for the season is 2.57.

Only thing I can think of was he had so many receivers open, he didn't have to hold the ball.

My daughter and I were at the game. She will only watch parts of games with me and doesn't pay attention otherwise.

She was able to tell Carr was throwing it to whoever Brown was covering a lot.

Bingo, it's hard to get a pass rush when the QB is able to go with first read. Carr throwing .28 seconds faster is a significant amount. I don't think our DEs are the problem as they have graded fairly well, it's just our pass defense is so bad and passes are so quick they are working with a disadvantage.

Which is exactly why Bradley isn't blitzing.

If you are providing safety help, you can jam more to buy time for DL to get there while bringing in a delayed blitz. It is just that scheme responsibilities aren't being executed properly. Is it coaching or talent or both? That is the part we don't know.

Our DE’s are getting few hits or sacks.  That’s their primary objective.  They need to be able to set the edge which is what they are better at.  I’ve watched every game. The quarterbacks have a lot of time to pick us apart.

I mean we are 13th in the NFL for sacks, with the lowest blitz rate. The last game and a half not having much of a pass defense has really hindered our ability to rush. Personally I'm good with the current state of our DL, because by improving our pass defense I think it would do wonders for our pass rush.
