There are some things we just don't forget. Dumb is as dumb does.

Definitely dumb, but if being dumb were a crime then most of the people would be arrested.

Carrying a firearm on a flight is a crime no matter what your personal feeling are.

Being dumb is no excuse for breaking the law.

And you think Williams should be apologized to?

That could be said about most crimes.    It is still a crime

it's possible, without knowing the whole story, but I have been ready to be scanned at places and realized I still had my weapon on me.  When it becomes as much a part of getting dressed as putting on socks an shoes, it happens.

Yup. And it's not illegal to take a gun on a flight, it just has to be in checked baggage, he had it in his carry on with no ammunition.  Some sites, unless you read closely, make it seem like this is ok as long as you do not have any ammunition, which in the revised article linked above, he had no ammunition.  And there is also this from the most thorough article I have found

Quote

If you are traveling through New York and/or New Jersey airports you may want to consider shipping your firearm(s) and ammunition to your destination, as even travelers in full compliance with federal law have been arrested or threatened with arrest.

So dumb yes, a crime, yes, a serious crime.  No, he shouldn't get any more than probation and a fine.

So what you call 'places' include boarding a flight?  It is your responsibility to know what the law is concerning you carrying a firearm no matter where you go. Carrying a firearm is not the same as putting your socks and shoes on.

I carry but I am also aware of where and when I can carry. If I am going to another state I find out what the laws are in that state. Even in my home state there are places I can't carry so it's an owners responsibility to know the laws.

I am not saying you are dumb and didn't mean to insult you in any way.

I just had a problem with your comment about carrying a firearm is like putting your socks and shoes on. IMO when you carry it comes with the responsibility of knowing the laws no matter where you are at or where you are going.

When you filled out your permit to carry you signed a statement that you would follow the laws.

Not knowing those laws is no excuse for breaking the laws.

I don't think Williams was posing a danger but he will have to go through the system just like anyone else. He will certainly not get an apology nor should he.

whats sad is that if he'd followed the official policy and procedures, its perfectly legal and allowed to take firearms on board commercial airliners.

No it is not.  It just has to be in a checked bag.

"You may transport unloaded firearms in a locked hard-sided container as checked baggage only. Declare the firearm and/or ammunition to the airline when checking your bag at the ticket counter. The container must completely secure the firearm from being accessed. Locked cases that can be easily opened are not permitted. Be aware that the container the firearm was in when purchased may not adequately secure the firearm when it is transported in checked baggage."

It's pretty simple. When you don't follow the law, you broke the law. The wording of my comment didn't include the law, just the breaking of the law. The second he didn't check it in, he broke the law.

It was his responsibility to know the law no matter when or where he is carrying.

Do they mean check in  as in 'before you go through security'

or did he some how get through security with that gun in his carry on?

If it's the second, I have questions for security

yes. you have to legally check your firearm in with your respective airline, they fill out a form, you lock it, take the key and the form with you thru security.   Some airlines will actually allow handguns in locked containers WITHOUT any ammo present to be carried on the plane, there is a special form for that and often they have an employee escort it thru security with you. But that's very state and airline dependent. But I have done it, as recently as 2013. But things likely have changed in those 7 years since I last flew with such.  There is also a LEO weapon policy as well.

If he failed to check it out the counter and went thru security with it, then yes, he broke the law.
