One thing I have noticed over the Grigson years is whoever comes up with the contracts for the Colts is solid at his job.  We never have much dead cap space and that is big.  It seemed like even though there were bad signings we were never on the hook for BIG figures if they were cut.

Why do I keep hearing an $80M figure? Does this number here include the draft?

I think it may have to do with the estimates for what the cap will be increased to, as the 2018 cap isnt set in stone yet as far as I can recall. Even these numbers are only estimates until that info is announced.

We also already signed AV, which cost 3.6M against the cap, so maybe people were just rounding up 77M to 80M?

Only other things I can think it could be are misconceptions about how much rollover we actually had, or maybe people looking at our top 51 number??

That's the trade off.  The FAs were not top of the line and could not demand the type of contract that creates dead cap space (usually guaranteed money).  That's why players like Trent Cole, Andre Johnsons, etc were signed and players like Mo Wilkerson and Dontari Poe were not, not to mention that FAs like Wilkerson and Poe never played much better after their contracts than the guys we did sign.

Build through the draft.  Don't sign someone else's cast off for big money.

Because these numbers don't take into account the projected increase which will be announced this week. Plus we had a tad over 77 million before resigning AV.

Im pretty sure it does take into account that estimated increase. The 2017 cap was 167M and if you click the link on the OP,  they have the base cap listed as 178M, which is what the cap is projected to increase to.

That being said, its only an estimate, and there have been recent reports that it could be even higher than projected.
