That old Colts era was pretty special. Look at the Hall of Famers , Championships, and even Championship losses that were historic. As you pointed out ,all in the era of other dominant teams.

My hero was Unitas, but I really respect and like Manning. Very tough choice. Luck is a great kid. I hope his career is closer to Unitas and Manning , than Bert Jones, although Bert was no slouch.

Yeah the old Baltimore team had tons of Great players like Unitas, Parker, Mackey, Gino, Berry, Bert, etc.. and Indianapolis has had Peyton, Marvin, Freeney, Mathis, Reggie, Bob, and now Andrew etc.. Fans in here should really appreciate how spoiled we have been. Ok we aren't the Patriots .

I guess other than that Tiger Irsay era , we have been blessed with some pretty good football since around 1957. I started following closely in 1960 , so I "missed" 2 glory years.

Yes, it is (the great) Albert Bentley - one of the most underrated running backs in Colt's history.

They never used him like they should have. When they got Dickerson he hardly got the ball anymore. He was a good player though. Played on the first Miami title team, the one that Tom Osborne went for 2 to win .

I just watched the story of the 1987 Colts and the combo of Dickerson and Bentley was deadly! We won the AFC East that season. That was a solid team.

Tiger did have three good years in 75,76, and 77 when we won AFC East Championships, but mostly not so good football.

The Colts won in 58 and 59, lost NFL Championship game in 64, got ripped off to GB on crappy FG call in  65, went 11-1-2 and didn't make playoffs in 67, went 13-1 in 68 winning NFL Championship then losing Super Bowl 3, won Super Bowl 5 in 1970, and lost in AFC Championship game in 71 to Miami. Pretty good run.

The Patriots have really only been good since 2001. Their history from 1960 to 2001 is pretty bleak. The Colts history is much richer in Hall of Famers historically. 

The old Baltimore Colts have had a much better record historically against the Patriots than in Indy. That being said, the Patriots have been a thorn in the side of the current Baltimore team, the Ravens also.

I still remember watching that game when I was around 16 years old. The TV was not getting great reception (could be there was fog at the game also) and that kick looked wide to me.  As I remember the announcers never questioned whether it was really good. Later on the news they started showing replays as to whether or not it was good. Pretty sure they extended the goal posts the following year.

We had two black and white tvs by the late sixties. All games were at 2pm. My sister watched NBC and the Jets downstairs, while I watched my Colts on CBS upstairs.

 

I still say that's why the Colts were allowed to move. After the 1970 merger, games except in Baltimore started at 1pm. Baltimore Blue Laws kept Sunday games at 2pm because tailgaters took all the church parking lots.  NFL grew tired of 1pm games, plus Baltimore's 2pm exception.

It was a brutal loss. I think that was also the Matte wrist band game as Unitas and Cuozzo were injured.

I blamed Irsay totally for a long time, but looking back on it, our politicians should have built a stadium going back to when Rosenbloom was there. The 2PM Blue laws were *ic and backward for the times. The 70's and 80's weren't a good economic time for Baltimore, and the politicians are as bad now, as they were back then.

Yeah for sure was the wrist band game.. And Colts knocked Star out on the first play from scrimmage. Pack fumbled and Shinnick ran it back for a TD. Starr tried to make the tackle and never played another down in that game.
