Arians New Offensive Coordinator?

Underachieving? Do you watch Steeler games or just happened to catch the ones where Big Ben was playing on one foot or running for his life behind that porous offensive line they've had for years there?

Yeah I posted later in the thread that my Steeler buddy said he was a good coordinator working with an awful O-line.

We'll see how he does here. I think we could have done better but i might be wrong.

I remember Arians having alot of really questionable play calling in the redzone.

The guy is known as a great QB developer. So that part is good if Luck is going to be the future.

Why? Can't wrap your head around the thought that someone might consider Caldwell a good coach? He has been involved in innovative, explosive, and succesful offenses his entire career, and he used to work with Tomlin (both Dungy proteges). It actually makes perfect sense, and I hope he gets the job.

lol...I can "wrap my head around" many things.....It was the irony that got me. Plus, I would believe that he could impress in a lesser role than Head Coach. I am sure I am not alone in that view.

I like it.

1. Arians was Peyton's first QB coach, he's familiar with the scene and what a QB needs. Peyton and Big Ben love the guy, I'll take those 2 endorsements.

2. Who better to judge an OC then the guy responsible for stopping that offense? Pagano knows a good OC because he faced them as a DC.

3. I liked the aggressiveness of the Pitt Off the last few years. So we now have an aggressive O and aggressive D? How long have we been waiting for something other than a dive on 3rd and 1 or a blitz every now and then?

Who else would you rather have? If you trust Pagano, trust his choice. He knows a heckuva lot more about an OC than any of us. I like the direction we are going.

Let's face it, we're now spoiled.....everybody rebuilds. I remember just making the playoffs being a goal.... And we never used to. Now its how many years in a row we made the playoffs? Unfortunately we have to deal with a rebuild but I like the direction with #1 and up and coming coach. Well be ok.

And with the rumour about Butch Davis, can one conclude that the 2003 Clevelend Browns had "the best coaching staff in the league"? I'm feeling a bit quesy about all this.

That was the last time I remember the stinkin Browns having a good team. Didn't they make the playoffs that year? Coaching surely had something to do with that. Didn't Derek Anderson throw for huge numbers that year. I could be wrong but if Arians can make Derek freaking Andeson look good I'll take him as OC.

You're correct that he was the last guy who got the 'stinkin Browns' into the playoffs. But he was gone before the great Anderson/Quinn controversy.

Whatever QB played that year Arians must have coached him up alot. Was that Couch that year? That must've been like his only good year.

Gotta say it... I LOVE IT! Although Pittsburgh seemed to have an unexciting offense.. they have consistently ranked in the top 10 or so in total offense. I want a tougher team. Pags will bring it to the D, I'm hoping Arians brings it to the O. With or without Manning we simply weren't a 'tough" team to play against. The culture is changing...

I didn't think they did anything possitive, but I had to go back and look.

2001 7-9 w/Davis as HC, Arians as OC, and Pagano as secondary coach

2002 9-7 same. One and done in playoffs

2003 5-11 same

2004 4-12 Davis fired after 3-7 start. Arians already gone to the Steelers in a lower position, suggesting that he had already been fired.

Anderson wasn't on the team for any of it. As I said earlier, Couch was - and that's not a good sign regarding peoples enthusiasm for them guiding Luck. Couch was an equally high pick, and a massive dissapointment.

Ok but this guy got Tim Couch to the playoffs. C'mon man. You can't give him all of the blame for Couch. Timmy Couch just sucked plain and simple. After Couch, Arians did develop Big Ben, so he made up for his failure in Cleveland already. Peyton & Ben > Couch. And in 2004 after Arians left they got worse according to what you just posted.

Cleveland's defense got TIm Couch in the playoffs. That's important to remember here since two of the guys we are looking at here are defensive coaches. That Browns team was very much offensively challenged.

I agree with you I think the fact Arians has developed Big Ben and Peyton Manning out weighs that he couldn't make Tim Couch into a great QB.

Welcome to the board Donkeyboy! And good job coming in and making a relevant point that I have not seen. Pagano has faced the Steelers O two times a year for the last couple years. He definitely has as good read on it as anyone.

Also, people need to remember this is a new team, new set of players different talent etc.. I don't think what he does here will be a mirror image of what he did in Pittsburgh

I wouldn't say Arians is aggressive, as much as i would say that he's just plain stupid. The guy has to be the worst redzone play caller in the league. He is way too in love with the empty set, and isn't willing make any adjustments to his system when faced with adversity. He retired from the Steelers because he was about to be FIRED. Ben wanted him to stay in PIttsburgh because he coddled him for 3 years, letting him do whatever he wants.

And for those using the O-line as the excuse why Pittsburgh's offense is unimpressive, I say that's still on Arians for trying to turn a team full of run blocking specialists into a pass-happy, "Colts-lite" offense. Max Starks, Will Colon, Trae Essex and (the Samoan guard who's name leaves me at the moment) are all big-bodied maulers who are meant to be used as run blockers. Rather than play to the team's natural strength, Arian's tried to convert the Steelers to his system. This is my biggest knock on him, and why I am extremely disturbed by this hire. I hope he proves me wrong, but I'm not banking on it.

So what he is a pass first guy, all the great offense are pass first, saint, packers, pats etc... The steelers had to modernize at some point , billieck used to be defensive minded back in the day now they focus on offense u have to change in this league to stay relavent
