56. Hughes (3-tech) - Kerr (3-tech)

57. Hughes (1-tech) - Kerr (3-tech)

Notes:

Seems like Hughes is viewed as pretty much a pure NT. Though I assume by playing him at 1-tech so much they think he has much more upside as a pass rusher than Chapman; which they should, because Hughes is a much better player.

They really like Kerr as a pass rusher and I wouldn't be surprised to see him start this year.

Chapman is viewed as a lane-clogger and not much else.

I still can't believe we let Redding go.  WOW! He got killed against the run.

Chapman would be a great lane clogger if he demanded double teams. He is double teamed 50+% of the time, and holds up very well.

The hate on him here reminds of what J Hughes got during the one successful season he was allowed to play here. Totally misguided, IMO.

Kerr's future looks bright......to me at least. Showed some quickness, but got shoved back worse than Redding. Have to see what he can make of himself.

Was it significantly different against New England?

I'm certain it was. The reps played by defensive linemen in the Pats games are way different. Chapman played a lot more against the Pats, for instance. There were even plays where we had five down linemen.

How do you think the alignments would've changed if Art Jones was playing?  Personally, I'm surprised taht someone like Chapman would ever be asked to play anything other than 0 tech, so he shouldn't see the field that much.

Redding would have played significantly less snaps and Jones would probably mostly play 5-tech, 2-tech, and 1-tech.

I think terminology can get confusing.  I think of Hughes as the guy who typically plays the "nose" when the alignment does not call for a 0 tech.   When a 0 tech is called for, then Chap is in...unless he's gassed.

you guys are the experts so I bow to you. All I know is- something didn't work...

Of course, once our OLine works better, maybe our DLine won't have to as much

Redding was one of our best linemen (11th best pass rusher in the league and 17th best overall) and a huge Veteran presence and leader.

I'm not sure what tape you watched on Chapman. I don't hate him at all and I hope he takes the next step in becoming great. I just think Kerr is a little better at shedding blocks.

I expect Kerr to get more snaps. He did great in his limited time playing, plus he can play anywhere on the line.

I was watching a little bit of the Pats game and Chapman played a lot more snaps. Him and Arthur Jones were very ineffective.

What stood out to me in that game is Chapman got blocked 1v1 by their back up center and taken completely out of the game.

however we played last year was not good, I hope we find better players or system next year, last years defense was not effective, don't really want to watch it again, once was enough, whoever played any tech was bad

Well, the route that management looks to be going is that the starters on last years' DL didn't work so well, so lets give their backups a try.

We need a big upgrade from Chapman. I said this in another thread and a couple of people were defending his play. I have not seen anything from Chapman that gives me confidence that he's the run stopper/space eater we need up front.

I've seen glimpses but he's been inconsistent. I've seen him hold his ground at times and flog the hole. Then I've seen him tossed like a rag doll 1v1. So don't know if it was the player or if he was ran down or dinged up. Hard to judge against NE when as a whole we sucked bad in all phases.

Dustin - is there any worth in doing the same analysis on both Patriot games?

I'd be interested in knowing if they used the same game plan against us in both games.  If so, shame on our coaching for their preparation.  If not, what did they do to take advantage of the mismatches?

IMHO, those are the only games where our D totally was dominated with a run game.  We were actually not bad against the other teams.

May take me a couple of days, but ill do both Patriots games. Ill add in some more info as well such as down and distance, result, etc...

I think it would be interesting to know.  I may be in the minority.  I have the shortcuts but I have a hard time re-watching those games.

the inconsistency is probably due to conditioning.  Last year was his first year as a full time NFL starter.  I think if he works on improving his conditioning he could be a very good NT with better athleticism than I'd have expected after watching him at Alabama.

I'm all for him improving his conditioning, but either way, he played too many snaps last year. He had 4 games with 30+ snaps, and 3 games with 40+ snaps. Correlation does not equal causation, but it might be more than a coincidence that we lost 6 of those 7 games (Denver, Philly, Pit, NE, Dallas, NE; the win was against Cleveland, and he played 31 snaps).

He could probably stand to lose a few kilograms, too.
