I think first cuts are the 26th, but players are swapped seemingly daily by Grigson.

Besides injuries, I think that's how it should be. If Grigson and Pagano can look at a guy in early August and know that there's absolutely no chance he's going to make the roster, then get him out of here and bring in someone who is going to do a better job competing in camp. Whether it's talent, work ethic, mental ability to grasp the concepts, whatever, I'm assuming these bottom rung guys who are getting bounced right now just aren't worth the continued coaching and evaluation. I like that the bottom guys keep getting churned.

I'm fine with that if there are actually people out there who might be better able to compete.  The problem is that I just don't think there are likely that many people out there who have a chance.

This is how you find out, right? If you know that Greg Moore isn't your guy, why keep him around any longer? Go take a look at the next guy you might have had eyes on a few months ago. He might not be your guy either, but you can't know until you bring him in. And maybe the next guy isn't final roster material, but in October and November when you have a practice squad spot, he might be on your short list. I look at it as advance scouting.

One more thing, those guys who know they're fighting for the last 5-6 spots on the 90 man roster take notice when someone like that gets cut. I'm sure it reinforces the idea that they have to work their butts off in camp and in preseason games. And overall, that improves the quality of the competition in practice.

I question honestly if there is even practice squad material left out there unsigned.  All 32 NFL teams have 90 guys in their camp right now.

Long odds, for sure. But you get rid of a guy you're not impressed with, and you have another roster spot available. Why not use it? You might find someone you like. He might make a big play on special teams coverage (that's how Terrell Davis got noticed at first; not that there are any Terrell Davis-like guys available right now). Who knows?

Someone who knows the NFL a lot better than any of us, Gil Brandt, has said that about 10% of the players in the NFL are elite stars.  About 80% are good players, not irreplaceable.  And about 10% probably shouldn't be in the league.

There are plenty of those 80 percenters still looking for jobs once the final cuts are made.  We just don't want any of that bottom 10% on our team or PS.

Good way to put it. So if you identify one of your guys as being a part of that bottom 10%, it's time to cut him loose. No sense in waiting.

Arrrrrrrrr.

First pirate - Sayyyyyyyy how did ya get that there peg leg?

Second pirate -  Arrrrrrrrrr, twas in a sword fight, bastage cut me low.

First pirate - Arrrrrrrrrrr

Second pirate - I see you've got a fine hook on yer hand, how might ya have gotten that fine appendage.

First pirate - Yarr, twas the same.....in a sword fight, I parried too soon.

Second pirate - I also see you've got a handsome eye patch.....was that in the same fight?

First pirate - Narr, nuthin quite so brave. Not but a seagull, crapped right in me eye.

Second pirate - And it took our yer eye?

First pirate - Twas the first day I had me hook!

Awesome pirate joke, but here's an interesting/odd fact about pirates & their eye patches...

Pirates would wear an eye patch so that one eye was constantly conditioned to darkness to be able to see better under the deck in the darkness of the holds...

Confirmed by Mythbusters, I believe.

If there are plenty of good players who are free agents though it makes you wonder why those 10% even have jobs?  Coaches just keep them because they think they have potential or are they busts that where drafted too highly to get rid of yet?

Didn't we have one of them as a starting QB a couple years ago?  Or was 2011 just a bad dream I had?

Seriously though, you know that a lot of draft picks make the team no matter how bad they look.  Lots of other reasons, like salary cap, availability at that position, etc.

I get your point (or his point) ... but I gotta think there are a few tiers within that 80%, with at least a couple that while not "elite" are better than just "good" and would be pretty hard to replace; and probably a couple bottom tiers that are barely "good"... I would like to see us without any of the bottom ~30% :)

So that leaves plenty of room to churn the bottom of the roster, especially before cuts.

A combination of the two, I think. Plus a little "the devil you know" syndrome, which I think is pointless for the 90th guy on your roster.

Our defense has been getting a good amount of interceptions! It's impressive and I hope they keep that up vs other teams.

Obviously some are due to throws that Luck probably usually wouldn't make but it's still a good sign.

I hope it's a sign of our defense being better, perhaps with increased pressure on the QB as opposed to Luck not doing as well.

    • Thank you. You guys are too kind, but I truly appreciate the support.    Perhaps I am being too hard on myself… But my point still stands that anyone who makes it to the NFL, whether practice squad or starter, has achieved something prestigious that only a rare few ever achieve.    Over a million high schoolers play. Of those only 7.8 percent move on to play in college.    Over 80,000 people play in college. Only 0.4 percent make it to opening day in the NFL.    Only 2,016 players make it to NFL rosters.
    • Davis had a very good rookie season after being drafted in the 2nd round out of Ohio State (I believe).   Graded in the 70’s against both the run and pass.      But his last three years have been disappointing, as he’s graded in the mid-50’s.   The reason I’m so interested in this signing, is (A) I’m sure it was heavily influenced by the new DL coach, Partridge.   And (B) we’re paying him 2/14.  I don’t recall that kind of money ever being given to a basic backup before.   Don’t think Davis is here to push Stewart, the Colts just signed him to 3/39.  That tells me the Colts defensive staff sees him differently.   I don’t know what the plan the staff has come up with for Davis, but I’m looking forward to watching it play out.
    • What I’m reading on him the Pacers did get good value. Looks like he will need time to develop but he is in the right situation to do that. The pacers are stacking some quality young players that will prove to be more outstanding depth or assets if they choose to make a trade. Very exciting time for the team right now.
    • I’m not a religious person, but since you’re an educator I think you’re doing Gods work!   In these crazy insane times we’re all living in you’re doing one of the toughest jobs on earth.  And you’re teaching perhaps the most difficult generation to deal with.     From a distance it feels like you’re being very unfair to you.  I’m hoping in time you’ll see yourself in a completely different light.    Someone highly thought of.  A leader in the community.  A protector of young minds.   I couldn’t admire a teacher more.
