Kubiak officially fired

Problematic, not impossible.

Schaub doesn't have any trade value, not without reworking his deal. Either way, he would have a dead hit of $10.5m in 2014, but you save $11m in cash, and you free up $17m in cap space in 2015. And you actually gain $4m in cap space in 2014. (If you want, you can designate him a post-June 1 release, and only take a $3.5m dead in in 2014, with the other $7m hitting in 2015.)

Foster has no trade value. Release him and take a $7.5m dead hit. (As a post-June 1 release, it's a $2.5m dead hit in 2014, and a $5m dead hit in 2015.) Saves $6m in cash, gives you $2m in extra cap space in 2014, and $9m in extra cap space in 2015.

Johnson might have trade value; I think you could get a 5th for him. And whether he's traded or released, his dead hit is less than $1m. Saves $11m on the 2014 cap, $16m on the 2015 cap.

If you move those three, you get a minimum of $17m in cap space in 2014 (maybe more with post-June 1 releases).

Thats why I said problematic and not impossible :P

The Texans basically have to do this though. Those players are not in future plans (or shouldnt be at least), and eat up a very large amount of their salary cap. Part of rebuilding will be clearinf out the cap space so Smith has room to aggressively move the roster as he needs to.

Let me rephrase:

Our QB's talents fit well in Kubiak's offensive system, which would actually be able to use our personnel do what our head coach would require of any OC (run the ball effectively) while actually taking advantage of our QB's talents.

Nice way to put it. I can't quibble with any of that.

I agree. No question they should part with those guys. They should also do something about Cushing's deal before this year is up.

Jonathan Joseph actually is a bigger problem capwise than Cushing. Cushing will be a 6.25 million hit, compared to J. Jo's 11.25 million. I understand corners make money, but as it stands hes the third most expensive player on the team.

Why are you telling me "GG"? Do I run the team or play on it?

He asked me if I was happy or sad over the firings, not over the season. I know, reading comprehension must be hard for you

..Which came as a result of the terrible season. Go ahead and try to pot shot your way out of this. You are firing nothing but blanks. The Texans are back to being the bottom-feeders of the division once again.

And no you don't work for the team, but you probably couldn't be any worse then who they have. You should consider applying, I'm sure there are going to be plenty of open positions by the end of the season

No Arian Foster, Daniel Manning, Brian Cushing, Daniel Owens or Matt Schaub(He wasn't elite and he clearly had a lack of confidence after he went through his pick 6 problems but a 4 game stretch after what was up to that point a pretty good career dont make you a bum) and they we were without Kubiak for a few games and they fire the head coach? This is could be very good for the Colts but this could do more harm for the Texans then good if they move on from Keenum and Schaub and whiff on a QB in the draft, Kubiak wasn't perfect and he had his faults but he got the team to be competitive, I think I would have brought in a backup veteran  Dan Orlovsky(who spent two years with the Texans) to backup Schaub who could help groom Case Keenum while providing a good backup, If they didn't like how Keenum was progressing then ya go with a QB in the draft

The problem is Keenum is regressing, not progressing. The book is out on him. He cant pick up the blitz and will run around trying to make a play downfield against it and usually take a sack deep in the backfield. Hes a decent back up, and plays for absolutely nothing money wise, but they need to move on.

He's probably not worth that amount of money, but at least he's healthy and playing.

Cushing is coming back from a serious injury, and has a $6m option bonus due in March. If he can't come back full strength, you're increasing your cap liability moving forward. You can't do anything about that option bonus once the regular season ends. Addressing it now allows them to restructure that contract to be easier to deal with in future years.

Imagine if the Colts did that after 7 starts into Lucks career after his 7 TD's and 7 ints(53.6 completion percentage is basically the same as Keenums 54) and 17 sacks taken....Not a large enough sample size, I actually believe he could keep them competitive for years to come believe it or not, He just needs to be groomed and time to grow as a QB, Keenum has some qualities that staff can work with

Luck also didnt get utterly steamrolled by the blitz literally every time it was thrown at him, and showed far more upside than Case has. He was undrafted for a reason, and its showing more and more with each game.

Luck progressed and did what rookies are supposed to do and worked through it. Case has been on Houstons roster for almost two years and is regressing. Pull the plug, move on.

Luck led comebacks and won games in his 7 starts. Not apples to apples.

Some people are better off keeping "taunts" to themselves, because they aren't very good at putting them into words.

It'd be hilarious to find some of the posts you and Vance had when the Texans were sitting atop the division. Totally different tune now.

Yeah, it would be easier to negotiate down with Cushing as he has the injury history. I just dont know what they will do with that J Jo contract. Its a little insane. Most of it (7.5 million) is guaranteed money too.

Imagine if Keenum was 3-4 after 7 starts. Kubiak might still have his job.

Luck still cant pick up the blitz most of time,  Most of the time he didn't get steam rolled had to do with more to do with him being hard to bring down then him picking it up, Luck has not progressed as much as you think

I never said Luck progressed a lot, just that he has some and can beat the blitz, even if its just by sheer force of physicality.

Case has done neither. Hes gotten worse with each game and the blitz beats him every single time. He can launch the ball to AJ on hail mary type plays, but has shown little else.

Looking at what you claim is an option bonus. The site I looked at showed it all guaranteed. So... yeah maybe some wiggle room.

They would likely be better then that if they had all there pieces......All Im saying is for a rookie through 7 games he has not beed bad and that teams have a bad habit of moving on way to fast more often then not from a QB, I understand it, the NFL is a win now business but 7 games in he has been more productive then even Luck was...you could argue that he would be every bit as productive a 2nd year Luck through 12 games if Keenum had played from the start.....and thats with Luck being a 2nd year player.......Without Luck we would be in deep crap no question but lets not act like he has made a monumental progression from year 1 to year 2

1. case isnt a rookie

2 Keenum is 0 & 7 with a much better team around him than luck has had as a pro. The two aren't comparable at all.

Of course most of his passes go to Johnson when he is trouble, Luck was the same way.....still was prior to Waynes injury, still would be if Wayne had not went down, This forced Luck to find someone else, Keenum is a rookie not a veteran and he has been productive through 7 starts, ya see if he progresses from year 1 to year 2, if ya wanna draft a QB thats fine but ya can just start throwing QB after QB out there if they are not pefect through 7 games

Keenum is not a rookie, hes a UDFA from the 2012 class. Hes been mentored in the Houston system for over a year before he got his start.

7 starts in his career he is basically a rookie, He does't have a much better team, he has his #1 wr to throw to, He is without his starting TE, Without Foster there starting rb, That O line is not very good at all otuside LT and Center, They are without Cushing on defense and Daniel Manning

Congrats to him, he held a clipboard his first year and got alot of practice reps(or some with the 2nd team)...That compares to real live football action how?

If you want to compare him to Luck then do it properly. Theyve been in the league the same amount of time, and according to you they are in similar team situations. The results? Luck is far better and Keenum is a nice hometown story that cant adjust and continues to get worse. He just isnt a starting calibur QB and never will be.

Sounds like your grasping at straws just to win a debate......7 starts into his career had Luck been benched with WORSE numbers and CLEARLY not being able to pick up the blitz this forum would have had a complete meltdown...Keenum has 4 picks in 7 starts and 9 td's...ya see where it goes, Bad franchises are bad franchises because they more often then not look to find quick fixes and if they dont play perfect then they are discarded and the process begins again, Next thing ya know your the Cleveland Browns...4 winning seasons in the last 24 years

Cushing just signed a new deal this year. There's pretty much nothing they can do as he looks to have over 19 mill in guaranteed money starting in 2014. It's called taking it in the caboose.

Looking at what you claim is an option bonus. The site I looked at showed it all guaranteed. So... yeah maybe some wiggle room.

They report deals with "guaranteed" money when it's actually just likely to be earned.

If Spotrac is correct, Cushing received a $9m signing bonus. His 2013 base salary was $1.1m. His 2014 base salary of $2m is guaranteed for injury. (Technically, if he passes a physical before March 25, they could release him and wipe that $2m out entirely.) There's an option bonus, like you said, due 3/25/14, of $6m. He also has a roster bonus of $1.25m. So, assuming he's on the roster with no contract adjustments as of the first day of the season, he will have been guaranteed $19.35m (signing bonus + 2013 base + 2014 base + option bonus + roster bonus).

What I was mistaken about is the due date of the option bonus. The 2014 league year begins March 11. The option bonus is due March 25. So technically, it falls in the 2014 league year, and can be renegotiated anytime before March 25. (In Manning's case, the option bonus was due in early March 2012, which was technically still a part of the 2011 league year; since the final regular season game had already been played, the bonus could not be renegotiated. I think the rest of the league has learned a valuable lesson, something that Polian and Condon might have overlooked at the time.)

I still think they should rework that option bonus. If they want to keep him and he passes a physical, they should make that bonus guaranteed salary, rather than paying it as an option bonus. That way they have future flexibility, should he prove not to be 100%.

still a much better team than luck has. Gragham is a pretty darn good te. Ben Tate could start for most teams in the league. His d is ranked higher right now than the colts d at any point throughout lucks career

    • We’ll see if it remains average this year.  I think it’s possible, but unlikely.   Put another way,  if the Colts defense is average in 2024 I will be very, Very, VERY disappointed.
    • I agree with you that he is not trying to build an average defense. It is just a plain fact that after 8 yeas of drafting and free agency, he has managed to do it.
    • Kind of an extreme example, but Jim Irsay specifically praising Bryce Young last year could qualify. In general though, if a team is trying to throw off the scent by floating positive information about other players, that seems harmless. It's different if a team is trashing a player to try to get him to drop into their range, and I don't think that's something that actually happens. If it did, I think that would be highly inappropriate, and I think a good reporter would look back and recognize that their source was using them, and think twice about trusting that source again.     So I think this is way more common than what McGinn did. And I don't think people ignore it, unless it's something they don't want to hear. Most sports reports include some version of 'I've been told...' without naming or directly quoting a source. A lot of those are just fact-based, black/white reports, but that often happens with more opinion-based or viewpoint-based reporting as well.     I don't know if anyone necessarily likes those reports, but I do think we consume them, and are generally influenced by them. Yeah, the substantiated/analytical stuff is way more valuable than a report discussion a potential character issue, but if it has a legitimate foundation -- AD Mitchell does have diabetes, it can be difficult for someone with that condition to control their mood and energy levels -- then I think it should be considered. Ultimately, I know the quality of information I have access to is nowhere near what the teams are getting, so I don't worry too much about it.      Yeah, I fully agree. Ballard faced the media when the Okereke story came out, and it was obvious the team had done their homework. He was firm when asked about Ogletree coming back. The Colts are thorough. Doesn't mean nothing can go wrong once they draft the guy, but I'm confident they've checked all their boxes.    And definitely, I think Ballard 100% meant everything he said, and I have no problem with him saying it. But, I think there's a difference between McGinn's report, and the narrative that came later. I think the report was based on anonymous insights, and the narrative was based on sensational headlines. And I'd say Ballard's comments apply more to the narrative than to the report.
    • Yes. Just like you might want to try to make a player drop to you, you might want to bump up the stock of another player so he gets taken ahead of you and this drops another player you actually like to your team.  This to me looks even worse. This provides even further layers of anonymity and even more questions about the veracity of the report. With what McGinn is doing at least we know where(generally) this is coming from and what the potential pitfalls might be(conflict of interest). If he generalizes it to "People are saying"... this could be anyone... it could be a scout... it could be an exec... it could be an actual coach of the player(this might actually be valuable)... or it could be a water boy the player didn't give an autograph to... In a certain way it makes it easier to ignore, but it feels worse to me because of lack of specificity about the reliability of the source.  There is a lot of appetite for more and more information about the players. I'm not so sure there is a ton of appetite for anonymous reports about character failings specifically. In fact, I think those are some of my least favorite pieces of content around the draft. I think there is TONS of good(and some bad) substantiated, analytical, narrative content for fans to consume without going into the gutter of dirt that a lot of those anonymous reports are dealing with. Unless it is factually substantiated(example, player X is being charged with Y crime, i.e. there's actual case... it's all fair game to explore that...)    Someone pointed out that it was Ballard that went to Marcus Peters' house and spent a couple of days with him and his family to give the OK to the Chiefs to draft him. Ballard is not a stranger to having to clear a prospect's character for his team so they'd be able to draft him. IMO he seems very confident in his read on Mitchell. I don't think he'd go to that length to defend his player the day he drafts him if he didn't really think the things he said. And I really think he feels strongly about this. I guess we will see in due time if he was right.
