Players that no one is talking about...

Never understood the hate Angerer gets around here. He's typically solid, last night was no exception. Bethea has been disappointing lately, though I wouldn't expect any safety to have much luck one on one against Andre Johnson like Bethea was a couple times last night. That's on the coach, not Antoine. Walden is quietly becoming a very solid starter.

1). Angerer has had 1 good year. Other than that he has been bad.

2). Safeties should be able to be a last line of defense. Kind of important as a safety

Landry has been playing well in his return.  But a lot of people are talking about him, as the title states, this is meant to be about some of the players people are not talking about on a regular basis.

No, not true.  I think the dline, Redding, Frankin and RJF have been playing adequate but not great.  Toler (against Denver) was steady not great.  Freeman played very good against Denver but really had a mediocre game against Houston.  Plus Studebaker and Brown are mentioned on here more for their ST play than defensive play.  Also I mentioned Constanzo who, you know, is not a defensive player.

The title of the thread is players no one is talking about, no one is talking about Redding, Franklin, and RJF.  That's the point.  The only players fans are talking about on defense are Mathis and as was pointed out and is true Davis.  It doesn't mean the others aren't playing well it's just no one is talking about them. Also I was more or less using a light hearted attempt at saying the rest of the defense doesn't truly get it's due because they have played well this year but that's not my fault for making it clear I wasn't being 100% serious.

Since I didn't bring up the offense Castonzo has nothing to do with this at least my post anyways.

1) Actually he has had 1 good year, 1 great year and one injured year.  And then this year seems to be shaping up to be another good year.  But why let a few facts get in the way.

2)  Yes, I would prefer it if the safeties never allowed a TD but since I tend to live in reality, I like it when the safety is in the right spot, 95 times out of 100 and still slam into the RB or tackle the receiver before they get the first down.

1). Nope

2). I have no problem with Bethea. Just saying at times he will have to cover a wr deep

... but played a great last night.

Walden:  I've been a critic of his but the last two gasmes he has played well.  He let Tate outside of him once last night and made a desperate dive over the defender and took him down.  I haven't ever questioned his activity level only his technique.  He also was the first one to play the naked bootleg properly.

Angerer:  He's seems to be the whipping boy on this forum but the last two games he has been playing really well.  Even before his heroics on Houston's last drive he was playing better than Freeman.

Werner:  Showed some nerves when he first came into the game, settled down and played some good ball after the first few plays.

AC:  He doesn't get the press that Smith gets or even Solder but he has been playing at a pro-bowl level all season.  His ability to take on a defender one on one really helped the Colts to make some adjustments to handle the rest of the Texans front 7.

Bethea:  He gets overshadowed sometimes with the return of Landry and the, usually, top notch play of Davis but he is about as good as a FS gets.  Kind of hard to fault him for the AJ catch, he was playing him well, Johnson just saw where the ball was going a split second before Bethea... 8 times out of 10 that type of throw ends up incomplete or INT.

You should do a post like this after every game :-).  I like giving the unsung hero a pat on the back!

Also I wouldn't pay too much mind to the Bethea naysayers.  A lot of people don't understand that the FS that is doing an exceptional job isn't going to get alot of coverage.  His field awareness is just exceptional.  I wish we didn't waste him trying to replace Bob those couple of years!

AC is starting to impress me.  He is starting to show consistency. And that applies to all facets of his game including his leverage skills and footwork.

I'm not sure on it but I think Walden is starting to settle.  His reaction time is improving and looking more natural.  I've been a bit down on him too but I think moreso on the circumstance that we acquired him and not his actual talent level.

I'm not going to get to high on Werner.  As a rookie he will have inconsistency, but I did like to see potential and I saw quite a bit last night.

I think if Angerer can play consistently at this level, we will see the whole linebacking core improve.  It helps tremendously when roles are being filled and performed at a high level and even though the D-Line doesn't have very good Gap control the linebackers physical skills can mask some of that.

I will say this.  I had a post about Coby Fleener a couple of weeks back that wasn't flattering.  And I'm still not going to take it back due to to his inability to be consistent, but he is starting to take shape.  If he continues playing the receiver part of his position with that much poise I will be elated to eat crow :-).  His blocking still is below average but at the same time getting better.  All in all if he continues to prove he can be a legitimate threat in the passing game I can easily give him a pass on the blocking.

Bethea is much better when Landry is back there and healthy.  Yes he got beat by Andre Johnson!  So be it.....how many players have been beaten by AJ?

If Landry stays healthy...Davis too...we will see the secondary come together.  Here's too hoping Toler's groing gets healthy and we can get Vaughn into his backup kick return status and special teams d....Wood_fence.jpg

I am proud of this team. Everyone cant be perfect all of the time. I think we expect to much out of these guys.

Trashing these guys every chance you get over and over wont change their performance on the field. We have a great young team that is playing their guts out for the Colts. I see a lot of effort out there on the field, not one person on this team is standing around with their hands on their hips taking plays off. They are all trying to contribute to the win. We should be trying to build them up not tear them down.

I hope none of our players read this message board, I would be ashamed.

And why is everyone suddenly using 4 letter words on here lately. I have noticed it in a lot of threads.

Thanks and I agree with much of your post.

I try to call things as I see them, usually on a game by game basis.  If someone is played well I try to say it, if someone didn't I try to say that as well.  I've been called a hater of this player or that player... I don't hate anyone on the Colts, that doesn't mean I won't point out their flaws when I see them.  For example, I think Redding is the best FA aquisition in the Grigs era because he's a hard worker, he understands what Pagano wants to do on D and, from all accounts, he is excellent and showing and teaching that to the newer/younger players on the team and I don't think the importance of that type of player can be understated when switching to a new D.  But his play the last few weeks has been mediocre at best.  He's not holding his ground on the LOS like he did last year and in the first few games this season.  His play is one of the reasons, IMO, that the run defense has been pretty weak this year.

I'm going to have to pay more attention to Redding then!  But in all honesty I agree with you.  The Run defense has been a tad disappointing in comparison to the defenses first year.

    • Yeah I would expect him to benefit from the new coaching staff also. But one of those benefits might be not trying to play him at guard when he's probably not physically suited for anything but center, IMO. That's where he played in 2021, I think that's where he should stay.
    • The entire Oline was bad in 22. Maybe Pinter would be ok at guard with a new head coach and OLINE coach. I don’t think you can take much away from 22. It was just bad.
    • Next round of OTAs begin tomorrow.
    • I honestly thought he had it entering turn 2 on the final lap. He was nearly 3 car lengths ahead. So damn close. I feel for him and for you!    I grew up in a family of Andretti supporters (I was the odd one who also like Foyt), so imagine my disbelief when Michael allowed his son to take the flag only to have Sam Hornish Jr. snatch it all away at the last second…    Maybe Pato will have a Sato like Renaissance?
    • Pato has been my favorite driver for a couple of years now. I got to experience this 500 almost fully. I was at almost every practice, I had a badge to get back in the garage, and I saw the race from an entirely different perspective for it.    The 5 team has had plenty of problems since the de-facto win in St. Pete. Those problems haven’t stopped all month. His car was snappy loose all month, and even during the race. I’ve told all my racing friends that Rossi was the best McLaren and he had the best shot. I expected Pato to run around the 7-10 range Sunday. He spent the first 2/3 of the day back in the 13-16 range and I thought it was a lost cause. When he cycled up front and came alive late, I couldn’t believe it. He's such a savvy racer in this race. He reminds me of Dale Earnhardt at a SS. He just knows where to go with his car when he needs to go. It’s like he senses the air and how to navigate it perfectly.    I sat over in T4. Dead center of the turn. 5th row. By the time they entered T3 I could turn my head from the big screen across the track and see them exit.    Watching Newgarden pass Pato on the outside in T3 coming to the checkers is something I’ll never forget. It was emotionally draining for me as a fan and 2 days later it’s still like my dog ran away or something. I even accidentally turned my phone on in my hand and recorded my own reaction to it. You can see me scream “NO!” As Newgarden went outside and then immediately turn to see them coming though 3. It’s salty language so if GDs and F bombs aren’t for you, I suggest not watching. 😬     When it was over I sat down, and looked at the guy I was with and said “I haven’t been this emotionally overloaded by sports since 4th and 2” and he knew just what that meant because he was sitting next to me that night as well.    I just hope someone checked out Newgarden’s software after the race. Make sure they didn’t convince themselves of any new rules or anything. 🤔
