I appreciate all the information but the color coding and dark black or light black isn’t necessary for me.  I don’t pay attention to the scores from three games ago.  The strength of competition is going to change every week.  I’m focused on the current games score and the year to date ranking.

I'm not going to be posting any grades save maybe just a few on stand-out players.

I'll try to rank grades as follows:

  • Elite 90+
  • Great 80-89
  • Good 70-79
  • Above Average 65-69
  • Average 56-64
  • Below Average 50-55
  • Bad <50

For reference the baseline grade is 60.0 - the average. To make it easier for me I've made some PFF-grade intervals for each of the above categories (see above). Fewer grades under average because once you get into that area under "Below average" there's not much point in grading it - it's just not good enough.

Stand-out performances week 6:

These are premium grades. I'll post links to where they can be found. If you find these PFF grades as interesting as me I highly recommend you subscribe.

  • Josh Downs - Overall 84.0. Receiving 82.7. Drops 73.4 and Fumbles 68.0 (What I generally combine to "Hands"). ADOT 15.8 - second highest score for him this season (LAC game #1). YAC/REC 13.4 - his highest this season by far! No contested catches. 2 missed tackles forced after catch. No penalties. 50 total snaps (28 Pass, 22 Rblk). (OffenseReceiving)
  • Rodney Thomas II - Overall 82.6. Run defense 61.9. Tackling 71.6 - No missed tackles. Coverage 79.9 - Gave up 1/3 for 6 yards. 1 INT and 1 Pass breakup. No penalties. 75 total snaps (33 Rdef, 42 Cov). (Defense)
  • Julian Blackmon - Overall 91.4. Run defense 77.4. Tackling 81.4 - No missed tackles. 3 Stops. Coverage 90.3 - Gave up 2/3 for 12 yards. 1 INT and 1 Pass breakup. No penalties. 75 total snaps (33 Rdef, 42 Cov). (Defense)
  • Tyquan Lewis - Overall 79.3. Run defense 71.0. Tackling 72.4 - No missed tackles. 2 Stops. Passrush 72.5 - 1 Hit and 2 Hurries. No penalties. 38 total snaps (17 Rdef, 21 Prsh). (Defense)

Downs had a great game and Thomas and Blackmon both great too. Tyquan Lewis has a string of 3 good games in a row now.

Comments on grades for Offense, Defense and ST, week 7

Seeing as the cats out of the bag on week 1-3 grades (my bad), I'll keep them here and make comments on week 7.

Offense -  (week3/week2/week 1)

(55.2/74.7/53.1) - Overall Offense

  • week 7 - Above Average. 3rd best week for our offense after the Texans and Titans games.

(49.3/80.6/49.2) - Passing

  • week 7 - Bad. New worst game for Passing of the season.

(65.3/70.9/68.3) - Pass blocking

  • week 7 - Above Average. Overall a decent Pass blocking game carried by the interior Oline - the Tackles had some trouble.

(62.3/63.2/57.1) - Reciever routes

  • week 7 - Good. Downs had a great game and Pierce had his best game of the season so far!

(61.4/67.4/38.8) - Run game

  • week 7 - Good. Actually our best game for our RBs, carried by JT

(45.4/82.9/62.3) - Run blocking

  • week 7 - Good. 3rd best Run blocking game of the season behind the Texans and Titans games.

Good offensive performance only let down by Minshew.

Defense - (week3/week2/week 1)

(57.7/62.3/78.9) - Overall Defense

  • week 7 - Good. Defense had an over all good game, but had it tough a few short-field drives.

(43.1/74.4/83.4) - Run defense

  • week 7 - Above Average. The Browns had 150 yards on 33 attempts, but take away the early 69 yard run and we held them to 81 yards on 32 attempts.

(39.0/51.8/66.4) - Tackling

  • week 7 - Average. Continues to be a 'meh' area for our defense.

(67.4/72.5/73.3) - Passrush

  • week 7 - Average. A step up from last week. Hopefully this means a turnaround and we'll see better passrush going forward.

(62.1/50.0/66.2) - Coverage

  • week 7 - Above Average. Best coverage of the season carried mainly by Blackmon and Thomas while Baker was busy running around like a headless chicken.

A good week for the defense despite giving up 39 points. Their offense was held to 333 total yards, 69 of which came on that one early run.

Special Teams - (week3/week2/week 1)

(54.7/69.8/78.3) - Special Teams

  • week 7 - Above Average. No Agnew to bust a long return.

Pretty poor performance from our interior Dline. Lewis has had a few good weeks back to back - hope he keeps it up. Speed and Leonard had good weeks. Frankling whiffed coverage. Moore carried the overall CB performance. Baker crapped the bed even if you look past the questionable penalties. Safeties had their best day as a unit by leaps and bounds.

I appreciate all the information but the color coding and dark black or light black isn’t necessary for me.  I don’t pay attention to the scores from three games ago.  The strength of competition is going to change every week.  I’m focused on the current games score and the year to date ranking.

I like to be able to look back throughout the season and see the growth or decline.

I did just post an easier to read format for current up-to-date season grades.

Perhaps @Solid84will post some of the weekly info?

It would seem that our LBers and DBs can't cover very well.

Despite a lot of hate Shaq is grading out as our best LBer.

Think our young guys were getting ready to turn the corner. Sucks about Brents, haven't heard what the deal is yet.

Jones finally got a position rank this week for first time. It's not high, but something to build on.

Hopefully Speed can come take over Baker's spot...

Blackmon is having one heck of a year.

Definitely a big jump this week, first four weeks he was grading in bottom 50

Been in top 30 since and up to #11. Almost got the bold and italicized.

I think Franklin is overrated at the moment at least. He makes a lot of tackles, but he also misses a lot and his coverage is pretty weak.

I'm personally not too big a fan myself.

Tackling machine, but not much else.

I think he plays reckless.

And I'm pretty sure he will be holding out next year.

With AR out, the performances of Blackmon, Brents, Downs, and Ogletree this year have been the best part of the season for me. Good to see Lewis back, I remember he looked like Aaron Donald in that game before his knee injury last year.

Can't forget Kelly, been #1 Center for all but week 1(#8).

The rest of the OL as well.

Raimann -#14

Smith - #13

Nelson - #17

Fries - #22

Lewis is playing good ball, and it's good too, because we need it.

Really enjoy this segment of the weekly PFF grades.

Solid format all the way around.

And when we say that Darrell Baker is the worst CB in the league, it's not hyperbole.  He's 115 out of 115.  :(

Yeah, it's been an ugly season

Baker - 44.8(87/92), 32.6(97/98),  32.6(104/105), 32.6(108/109), 32.6(108/109), 32.1(112/112), 30.1(115/115)

Never been better than 6th worst(week 1)

4 weeks of being 2nd worst(3 of which he was benched)

2 weeks of being the worst

Came back from being benched and somehow got even worse....

Ryan Kelly continues to prove me wrong. And I’m glad for it. Hope it continues

Yep.  According to PFf this is easily his best year ever so far.  That’s about as surprising a Colts development that I’ve seen since the ole Luck retirement.

Brents and Blackmon have actually been our best tacklers this season according to PFF. Nice to have that security in the secondary. I'd like for Cross to get a chance instead of Thomas. Thomas had a great game against the Browns, but besides that game he's been subpar all season.

I’m disappointed Cross hasn’t been able to earn playing time.  If he showed out in practice that he’s ready I’m sure he would be out there.  He obviously isn’t so I don’t want him out there until he is.  It looks like he could be a miss unfortunately.

He could be, but he was only 20 when he was drafted last year I believe? He still has time to improve, but at some point he needs actual in game reps.
