Matt Miller: Source "expects WR to be high on Colts wish list in 1st round"

I'm posting the same thing I posted in the other thread about this rumor:

It says "A high-placed scouting source told me this week they expect wide receiver to be high on the team's wish list in the first round of the 2020 draft."

-"high-placed scouting source" might mean anything really and it doesn't say that that scouting source is with the Colts. A ton of the "sources tell me" stories about the draft are suspicions other teams have about their competitors. For example, lets say the source is a scout for another team and he sees the same Colts scouts and execs  at games featuring highly ranked receivers... and he makes a note of that and sends it up the chain.

-if it's coming from a Colts scout I can guarantee you this is a personal opinion of his rather than some formed intention by the Colts FO. I doubt Ballard is even meeting with most of his scouts right now while the season is going on. They still don't have all the information, they don't have the list of players declaring for the draft, they don't have any measurements or athletic testing, they haven't met and interviewed any of the prospects, none of the draft events have taken place. The Colts scouting department at this point of the season probably doesn't even have the rudiments of a draft board and most importantly, I seriously doubt the scouts have any idea what Ballard's thoughts are right now about the draft because... you know why? Probably because Ballard doesn't have any firm opinions formed yet, precisely because he doesn't have anywhere close to the full information.

So yeah... take that article with a pinch of salt.

I think there will be SEVERAL positions on the Colts 1st round wish list.

It will be interesting to see which positions are targeted in draft and which in FA.

Are there any WRs that have value around #15-ish?  I was thinking Balkard would look at DT, but we do have thatcearly #2 as well.

This draft/FA i’d like to see DT, WR, QB, OL, TE, EDGE, CB, RB.

Not in that order, and to varying urgency.  Seems like alot, but i like the bones of this team.

EDIT: How the heck did i forget kicker?  Add that to the list. The current guy may be the answer, but i wanna see competition at K at camp.

QB WR DT DE.  You don’t have to twist my arm to me to believe that the Colts will probably take one of those in round one.

I doubt they take a running back they have four good ones on the roster.

Your point is valid as far as taking the article with a grain a salt.

I will just say, I believe Ballard has scouting reports on players anticipated to come out next year and beyond. At least I would like to think any good GM does.

Scouting is a year long job. It doesn't just start at the declaration deadline.

Agreed, however it wouldn't surprise me if Ballard took one later.

It would for me because it’s not a need and it would mean one of the four that they have would have to go.

Agreed.  RB groups are turned every year.  Mack has contract coming, a good reason to add insurance.  Hines is not a #1, Wilkens may or may not be, and williams may or may not be here.  I can see Ballard adding a guy later of he likes him and feels he dropped.  I expect Mack to get paid, but Ballard may have other plans.

I dont see it as a need, rather it just seems to happen regularly.

I would consider taking Lamb in the first round. He gets open, he catches the ball and he sure knows how to run with it after the catch. But we really need to go dt and db early, grab a receiver later.

The only way i would take a WR in the 1st is if its a Watkins type gamechanger that has all the skills PLUS size.

The Colts have enough other needs they don’t need to worry about the running back position in this draft unless someone is so good you have to take them.  Beyond that they can bring back the four they had this year plus a couple of other camp bodies and be fine.

QB, end, DT, Safety, kicker, WR, tightend, oline depth and maybe a CB are what are needed in this draft.

I'm on record as preferring to take a WR in either the 2nd or 3rd round.   Not just this year,  but any given year.

But this might just be one of those "exception to the rule years."   A year where the talent is so exceptional that we take a WR in the first.    Especially if we think a QB can be ours with our Skins pick at the top of the 2nd round.

If we end up with a QB in the first,  then I'd expect a WR in the 2nd round with one of our two picks this year.

I’m ok with that.
I’m just saying it wouldnt surprise me if Ballard tried to improve on Wilkens and / or Williams.  I just have a feeling.
