His situation was risky, but what they gave up was low risk. That’s why I said medium risk. And he was still an elite talent which is why I said high reward. I’d even argue they got more production out of him than they would have drafting a 5th round receiver.

Possibly, but the 5th rounder would still be on the team now, and into the future. Gordon is gone. At crunch time.  Pats get no compensation either.

That's impossible since the trade was 2019 5th rounder for Gordon.

Sorry....

 

But being smart or stupid has nothing to do with addiction.    Literally, absolutely nothing.

 

Doesnt mattet if it’s alcohol, drugs or tobacco...  plenty of smart people have gotten hooked and plenty of stupid people have never touched the stuff. 

 

It’s a very complex issue...   if it were that easy, then curing people would be easy.   And yet it’s incredibly difficult.

Gordon likely has very little money.   He wasn’t a first round draft pick, and after all these years he’s never had a big payday.   He kept getting suspended.   

 

His financial future is not promising right now.

I always feel for guys like this. It's a double edge sword playing sports, the dangle of the big paycheck keeps them clean, but the access to everything and the money causes them to fall. I have no idea what demons are in him to cause him to fail so many times, but with the NFL and possible wealth in his past there's noting left for him but self destruction. I feel for him, this isn't a case where he thought he was untitled, he really does have problems..

I don't have any pity for him at all.   He had the best treatments and help given to and available for him.   He chose to throw it all away.   I understand addiction can be tough, but we all have to do what we have to do.   I'm a recovering alcoholic myself.   Haven't had a drop in 2 years.   It's not easy, but I don't have even have the millions of reasons to do it that Gordon has.   I used to smoke pot, but gave it up many years ago for my job.

5th round picks often dont make the roster or ever contribute much of anything

 

it was a risk for sure, but not a very big one

many become a JAG, or even  fall out of the league.  But the trick to team success is finding a gem in later rounds. Not all 5th (or later) picks are wastes.  Here's a few that were more than a JAG and worth it-

of course he would, thats why it was a risk.  he is one of the most aggressive GMs in the league when it comes to trades, i doubt he is losing much sleep over this pick though

Considering where most of Belichick's 5th round picks end up, this was a worthwhile gamble on New England's part. 

Football aside, I just hope the guy gets well.
