Nate Irving visiting Colts today

Recommended Posts

I understand the need for depth at ILB over 16-20 weeks during the course of a season so I can't fault Grigs for getting more reinforcements at this position, but as a INDY fan, I wanna get excited over a new defensive addition on our squad that's relatively young who gets my blood pumping. Nate Irving isn't that guy for me. He's good not game changing to me. JMO.

I think we are all looking for another Vontae Davis type of player to add to the defense. A real playmaker...but honestly outside of the flashy positions like corner and pass rusher there really aren't that many playmakers in the other positions...and if they are like a Suh...well they are very expensive. I would love an upgrade at the LB position....because its usually the qb of the defense and important in the run game and often covering those short crosses etc...so I agree with you...just think at this point with what is available...Irving is a solid signing that will allow us to be flexible in the draft because while we certainly still have need for LB in the draft...we don't HAVE to have one...opening us to be aggressive for another position if we choose to. Typically teams find their stars in the draft because of how expensive free agency typically is. If we are looking to get excited I expect that we may add someone early in the draft to help our defense. Grigson has been a little all over the place with draft and free agency in success...hopefully he has a really good draft because as we pay our big guys we will need young affordable players to sustain our growth and success.

Oh...and I think Coles probably qualifies as that splash type signing. I think we are going to expect him to really help us in the pass rush...so it isn't like we struck out in FA on the defensive side of the ball. I know Irving and Langford as well might only feel like marginal signings but they could very well play significant roles on our team next year.

He's also a much better player and not coming off of a torn ACL.

While neither are going to make a pro bowl...one isn't a total liability in coverage either. Irving isn't a world beater...but Spikes can only play the run...and even that is slipping.

Spikes gave up 134 yards in coverage last season. Irving gave up 227 in 200 fewer snaps.

How to lie with stats - impossible to get anything with yards given up in coverage without knowing how much he was in coverage, who he was covering, etc.  For example, Josh Chapman gave up zero yards in coverage, so he must be better than both those LBs...

Just like Rushing Yards given up by a DB

Honestly I don't know what goes into those numbers. I do know Spikes has been seen as a run stopper....Buffalo wanted him only in a limited role. I'm not saying Irving is great in pass protection but playing in Denver where the other team is often trailing and attempting to throw based on Denvers great run defense I'm sure means Irving got exposed more often than they would like. Especially with coverage specialist Danny Trevathan out last year. Again I don't fully know Brandon's usage in Buffalo...his tackles were WAY down from NE so that would probably suggest he was limited in his playing time and most likely used for the reason he was brought in (run stuffer specialist). Not saying he isn't a better player than Nate but given our needs and we already have Jackson and we don't have a MLB position we probably look at the more atheletic LB. Who knows...maybe Grigson sees it like Supes said...maybe its simply his other issues that keep him away...and maybe teams have it all wrong based off his passing stats but everywhere I see him as run specialist.

Ok.

I'm just happy we are looking at adding some depth at the LB position...I've not been thrilled with our production there and especially the guys behind Jackson and Freeman...whether its Spikes or Irving or someone else....I'll trust Grigs to get the right one but I think this is a good sign we are still looking to find depth for our team.

Normally, I'd say that means he has a higher price tag, but who knows anymore, with the way this offseason has gone. I think it comes down to the staff not liking Spikes.

I think it comes down to Spikes wants to start,  and we don't have a starting job for him.

Even if we're offering him a contract,  its likely at back-up money and that's not what he's looking for.

Spikes strikes me as roughly like DQwell.   Since we have one,  I'm not sure we can take the other.....

That could be it, too.

    • Oh contrare, I’d say it says more about Shane Steichen’s skill set as a coach.
    • Excerpt from an article at NFL.com …     ”… One player the Colts can lean on while Richardson gets his sea legs: running back Jonathan Taylor. After last year's hold-in and injury issues, the star running back looks back to his old self. JT bursts through the line like a Mustang on fire, leaving linebackers in his wake. On Sunday, Taylor totaled 12 carries for 103 yards and +55 rushing yards over expected, his most RYOE in a game since Week 15 of 2021. He also forced five missed tackles across 14 touches.    Shane Steichen's decision to bench the star back during the entire fourth quarter because the Colts were in pass mode belies credibility. Even if Taylor isn't a prolific pass catcher out of the backfield, sitting your best offensive weapon for an entire quarter is folly -- hopefully one Steichen doesn't repeat. If defenses are going to sit back to slow Richardson's deep attack, Taylor should gobble up chunk gains.    At this point, Taylor is the most consistent thing going for Indy. The 25-year-old back owns a game-changing gear and can shoulder a massive load. His presence and production should help settle Richardson down during the roller-coaster dips. Taylor hasn't looked fully healthy in a couple of years. He did this past Sunday. The Colts need to ride that stallion.”     The above referenced article kind of echoes my feelings on the matter.
    • Exactly I am confused with that comment by Shane unless that one drop deserved him to be benched. Again coaches know what's the best.
    • I'm not sure why the team thinks JT can't be effective in the passing game.
    • I know that you use the word only once, and I'm sure that you know what it means. But find one example of me contradicting myself please?
