How about some props to griff!

If Whalen takes one "to the house", I'll be shocked. With that said, I still like him as a PR. He has sure hands and he comes up to make the play on the ball instead of misjudging it and letting it bounce for another 20 or 30 yds.. If Griff called a fair catch every time I'd be satisfied. It seems if there's any kind of a runback, the refs throw a flag anyway, resulting in -10 punt return.

I'm far too lazy to do the research, but I wonder what the % is for penalties, league wide, on punts that were returned?

Griff is quickly becoming one of my favorite colts. The guy is so underrated and isn't the most athletic or physically gifted players but the guy just does what he's asked to do and doesn't complain and cAtches darn near everything thrown in his direction. Last but not least his name is freaking griff. I mean come on!

I cAnnot remember the colts having really good return guy since maybe when Terrence Wilkins first began playing for us. It seems like griff is just one block or one guy from breaking a long return. I think he's gonna bring one to the house in the next 4 games book it!

He's great in PR, seems like every time he breaks a big one its always called back.

he's absolutely nothing special in return game.. his best feature is reliability, he has sure hands and makes good judgments (when to fair-catch/take a knee in the endzone or run with it)..

he lacks in speed and agility to break off big returns, as is evident by his potential big returns negated by colts blockers holding/illegal blocking the coverage players..

I like him as a team guy.  He is doing all the things that teams need done out of their subs.  When he is called into service on offense, makes an impact. Does the right things on special teams, fair catches when he should, attempts the return when he should, when he decides to bring it out of the endzone on Kick offs he KNOWS he can at least get to the 20 and then some.  Was their on the onside kick like it was planned all along.

He is what I like to say a glue guy.

Agree. Maybe he has reached his ceiling with God given talent, but nobody will outwork Griff or put forth effort to get an extra yard. "Intangibles" are high, just plays football the way its supposed to be played, my favorite type of player

how is his lack of speed "evident" by blockers "holding/illegal blocking" or have anything to do with?

In this day and age, especially with kickoffs it's almost pointless to invest in a big time return man.

Just having a guy who can reliably catch the ball will do the trick.

Also want to point out Griff's big catch on the onside kick.  Perfectly executed with the Jack Doyle block followed by Whalen coming down with it.

because that's the only way he can break through the kick/punt coverage..

IMO, I don`t think that's the only way. I good executed block could spring about any return specialist at the NFL level. Whalen doesn't need it to be illegal to make a nice return. I have yelled at the TV "why does he run backwards" sometimes haha but he`s still learning

Don't get me wrong, i like the guy and think he does an ok job, but lets be honest, he's not a great returner, he's just serviceable..

And I was just going by the evidence, since all of his big returns get called back by penalties..

I watched the game again today, Whalen had some nice returns? Had a nice 29 yard KO return with no penalty. I`d be interested to see what the Colts average starting field position is compared to years past? He`s no Devin Hester but he`s better than just serviceable

I will go on record as saying that as long as he can stay healthy he will be the future Wes Welker for the Colts.

I beleive he is going to be very involved in this offense in the next year or two (likely as soon as wayne retires). He doesnt have a great speed or to tall but his cuts are extremely sharp, hes smart, knows how to get open and above all his work ethic remind you of someone?
