Regarding our 'No Coast' offense (from Pagano)

Here's an article from ESPN's Paul Kuharsky....  he talks to Pagano about our 2013 offense and how much will be West Coast and how much will be our vertical attack from last season....

To me it reads like we're trying for the best of all worlds.   We're going to be doing some of everything.

I think this may have benn posted a few days ago.

It is pretty much what Pagano said with the defense i.e. nothing. He is certainly not giving his hand away.

That said I do believe we are trying to bring a high degree of versatility to both sides of the ball.

We know there will be an emphasis on the running game and keeping safeties honest and out of the box will be a big component of making that work. If there is a threat of deep balls it makes the field bigger for both the passing game and running game, and a bigger field means more space.

Conceptually I really like where we seem to be going.

We have a hybrid defense, why not have a hybrid offense?

All offenses are hybrids. The West Coast Offense wasnt a 250 page book of plays and principles that someone copied off for Pep. Its more like a concept or the order of operations we will base going about our business on.

Its like when you see a movie that says based on a true story. They take the main points - and build the "most entertaining" story possible using the characters involved.

This is our offense. The players will dictate what we will do. If you dont have WRs that can get deep or a QB that can get it to them then you will be limited to the short pass. If you dont have the RB to carry or touch the ball 20-25 times a game you have to adjust.

Some comments make it seem backwards. Like for example. Pep will not all of a sudden make D Carter start trying to catch balls out of the backfield just because thats what the offense says to do. Unless D Carter has the skill set for that & just never was asked to do it - D Carter will be used for whatever skill set he brings into training camp. Pep will sign a RB with the skill set necessary to expand the offense. Thats one way players get cut. If your skill set isnt the direction the offense is moving - see ya.

honestly i think we need to stick with the same offense we ran last year maybe throw in a couple things that pep likes to use. we avg i think it was 25 pts a game, while our poor defense gave up an avg of 20 points a game i think it was. honestly we would have finished 12-4 if it were not for that defensive break down at the end of the game against Jax in the first game at home. if it aint broke, dont fix it.   and i think with our new aquisitions we should be better atleast on paper we look better, guess it will come down to the chemistry of these newly aquired players.

Not all offenses are hybrids. All playbooks probably have a few Hail Mary plays, that does not mean they are not a dink-and-dunk offense. Some offenses are very set in there ways and obvious, but are still successful because of excellent execution.

To call our offense last year a hybrid/versatile does not make proper use of either term. We were very much vertical and aggresive in our philosophy, and whilst we included more conservative plays that does not detract from the overall governing philisophy.

Obviously the nature of any offense is to maximize skillsets and create mismatches, but truly versatile offense is a very rare thing in this league because few players can do it all.

One thing that stood out to me was this quote "We’re still going to take our shots down the field. How many that is a game and what we’re going to ask as far as the offensive line provided time, I can’t tell you. The game will dictate that."

I love this quote times a million. Shows we are not going to just go in with a set gameplan and stick to it. Shows we are going to either a) attack the opposing teams defensive weakness or b) stick to what is working at the given time. Both are a good way to succeed as an offense.

I agree - i didnt mean hybrid as how the term is used as in our defense & I should have said "hybrid". Because all I meant was that no offense uses plays and principles 100% specific to any one certain system for exactly the reason you said. No team has the perfect personel to do that. Mixing pieces of other offenses to change pace is my understanding when I hear coaches use the word "wrinkle".

Are there any teams that DON'T try to attack the opponents weaknesses or stick with what's working?

Good coach speak by Pagano.

I've seen plenty of teams try and stick to what their offensive strength is despite it not working.

I think there is too much ado being made about the change in coordinator.  And it all seems like speculation.  People are guessing that Luck won't do well in the offense, people are guessing that it will be a WCO, people are guessing that we won't see deep throws.  The funny thing is people continue with this speculation even after Pagano puts it to rest like he did in the interview.  I have no concerns about our offense other than the offensive line.

Didn't Pep himself say they were going to take a little bit of Arians offense, Stanfords offense. San Fransico's offense, Dont be surprised if we take a little from New Englands offense (with the addition of Donald Thomas) and Houstons offenseSteelers offense, Titans offense...Heck even Clemson and Lindenwoods offense, I dont expect Pep will put limitations on his offensive strategy if his players can learn it, The more diverse the more difficult to pin point
