Just saw that Mayock has him as his #3 CB ahead of Trufant, seems like this kinda came out of no where, as i havent seen him ranked anywhere near the top CBs, i guess he had a good pro day?

heres some info on him http://www.nfl.com/draft/2013/profiles/d.j.-hayden?id=2539237

i wouldnt take him in the first cause of his late rise but possibly take a look at him in the 3rd, altho i like Banks Amerson and Mathieu ahead of him

thoughts?

This is why:

"Life threatening injury his senior season, return back to football will be a long and trying journey."

i still dont get why that would make him the #3 CB, in fact, for me that would put him much lower, is he that good of a talent or am i missing something? i know he missed last season but from not a top 10 to #3 out of no where?

I don't know much about him to be honest. But that injury turns me off immediately.

i agree with that, and no matter what the mocks say, i still like banks alot, he was the #2 consensus CB for so long then he dropped out of nowhere after the combine, i still like him alot

From the outside looking in,  it does seem like the guy has risen too far too fast....

One of the hazards of scouting....   easy to fall in love with a new flavor that shows well late...

Poe last year from his combine...    Ansah and Jordan and even Mingo this year, mostly from the combine plus great raw tools.

And now,   Hayden.    I've read that many think there could be up to 8 corners taken in the 2nd round....   I suspect Hayden will now make them 9 corners...   he's got a decent shot....

That is a scary injury. Could be some serious physiological issue's to get past with that type of injury.

I dunno, he doesn't sound like a mental giant. He was quoted as saying "just don't ruin my abs" before they cut him open.

I can tell you about this kid. He is the best corner in this draft, if not for his freak injury he would be in the number one spot. He didn’t miss his senior season he only missed the last couple of games, but prior to this nobody wanted to throw on his side. He cover guys without safety help and with something like 400 pass attempts against this defense only 41 were thrown to his side, and only 11 were caught. And from that he also had 4 pics with 2 returned for touchdowns and both were over 75 yards. I say all of this to let you know 4 months ago this kid was in a lot of pain he worked back to be able to run a 4.33 40 yard dash and you want to question his mental toughness. Whatever team picks him up will have the best corner in the NFL....

I like all the corners that they have in the top 5, but if you look at the tapes closely you will see the difference in the top three. Dee Milliner can’t backpedal and that is a must at the next level. Rhodes will get a flag thrown on him every snap, he has a had full of shirt on every play on his highlight tape. And the boy from Washington I like a lot, he is always a step behind and then he knocks the ball away after it has been caught. That won’t work at the next level. Check it out for yourself.

He has been cleared by the NFL Dr. He is good to go.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'll say this. After watching different clips of Hayden he seems to have very adequate cover skills, pretty good instincts and awareness, but I question his willingness to come up and support the run. Different plays against different teams it seemed like he would always find a way to not be in the play when the run came to his side. As far as pass coverage is concerned I will say that he does seem more than capable to play solid press man coverage. He reminds me of a mix between Champ Bailey and Xavier Rhodes in some ways. Although I did not see enough evidence to confirm his willingness to tackle.

Todd McShay has him going to us at #24 in his ESPN insider mock draft 5.0.

I was like WHAT!? I don't know much about players until right before the draft and I have just now seen this kids name popping up in the last week or so.

He has 1st round talent in my opinion (he can press, tackle and has the loose hips and speed to be left alone on an island I think)I doubt he goes in the first, just to many D Linemen, Linebackers and a couple other Corners will likely go ahead of him plus a Safety or maybe 3

If he fell to the 3rd that would be amazing but like others have said he won't so I don't see any way we get him

i say if theres no one promising at 24, trade into the second for someone with 2, 2s and grab hayden and a guard, possibly warford or jones

Mcshay is literally the only guy that high on him nobody else has him in the 1st.

    • I really want to win. It doesn't matter to me who the GM is. If Ballard, AR, and Steichen succeed and make us a playoff contender every year, I'll be fine with it and be happy to root for this team. I'm just sick of the losing and missing the playoffs. I trust Ballard in the draft, I trust Steichen as a QB guru. It's time for us to win, and if it's Ballard that does so, we won't have to do a complete rebuild, and that would be the biggest positive and best-case scenario that could happen.
    • Am I the only one who really hopes AR and Steichen end up being a success story and this hypothetical Ballard firing doesn’t happen?
    • You were picking better than me most weeks, just had unfortunate luck once or twice, I definitely earned that last spot. My average was pretty bad week after week.
    • You are missing out a rather LARGE piece of the puzzle in your factoring here. We had last season's win numbers with GARDNER FREAKING MINSHEW at QB practically the whole season. Love the guy and what he did for us last season, but he isn't exactly a world beater at the QB position. AR brings such a different dynamic to this offense and teamm, Shane is going to be chomping at the bit to get started this season. The sample size we saw from AR last season was small, but it was definitely encouraging - especially considering we were all expecting him to be much more raw and inaccuarte. He basically red-shirted last year, learning the NFL game and in Steichen's ear the whole time, while learning the playbook inside out.  Our team has fundamentally stayed the same as last season, which damn near won the AFC South with Gardner at QB for the love of god. Now we add AR to that mix, as well as some very interesting additions in Mitchell and Latu who could have very meaningful impacts. The fact that we are so under the radar is almost laughable - AFC South isnt going to know what hit it.
    • Great points!  I would assume the Irsay’s would conduct the interviews. If Steichen is given more control he would as well or the new GM could decide his fate like Ballard did with Pagano. Several ways it can go and we are a few years away from it even happening so who really knows. I’m hoping none of it matters and the team becomes a true contender and this discussion is merely killing time.
