likely to miss the Colts’ season opener against the Houston Texans on September 11. The reports state that the team is concerned with the rate with which Manning is healing, and that Manning will be re-evaluated by several specialists to determine the cause of the problem. One possibility, put forth by Mortensen, is that scar tissue has encased the nerves and is preventing their regeneration.

As originally reported by 1070 the Fan host JMV on Twitter, Peyton Manning is not recovering from neck surgery as quickly as expected and is now likely to undergo a second surgery which could well end his season.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that Peyton will be evaluated by doctors, but that currently no second surgery 'is planned'.

Possibly out 5 weeks with sore back

Stampede Blue

chatter began Sunday Night when our friend John Michael Vincent at 1070 The Fan radio in Indianapolis tweeted this:

Been told by multi sources that QB P Manning needs a 2nd neck procedure. Will remain out indefinitely.Called #colts and waiting on response.

The news spread widely over Twitter. To my knowledge, JMV has not been contacted back by the Colts. A few hours after JMV broke this news,

Peter King and Chris Mortensen got quotes and news from the Colts and Bill Polian, essentially saying Manning was being evaluated by several doctors and that no new procedure has yet been scheduled.

Then, Mortensen tweeted this:

As when Colts signed Kerry Collins for $4 million, team did not believe PM would be ready for opener. Barring miracle, that's more evident

[uPDATE]: From CBS Sports' Mike Freeman:

The NFL was set on fire when an Indianapolis radio station reported quarterback Peyton Manning will need an

additional surgery on his neck.

Well, that isn't true. Yet.

Emphasis on yet.

ESPN reported Manning is seeing additional specialists due to the slow healing of his neck. That is accurate.

After speaking to a source on the

Colts the team didn't believe Manning would get another surgery. There was, however, a serious concern that Manning was not only going to miss season the opener but the potential was for Manning to miss four or five games. Or more.

[uPDATE 2]:Jason LaConfora of NFL Network:

The odds of Manning making full recovery in a week seem bleak, even though he's been an Iron Man since entering the NFL.

[uPDATE 3]: More from Peter King:

Peyton "When It Rains It Pours'' Manning has a sore back too. More in MMQB.

So much for a good, restful sleep.

Its not looking good for the opener, thats for sure.. If he misses against Houston, he will probably miss the Browns game. Hopefully he can be out there for the Steelers game. Although, thats a nasty defense to play coming of an injury.. I guess we have to wait and see..

Why are we worried? We have the Best GM (or had) in the NFL (by far), in Bill Polian. Do you really think he would build an entire franchise on the back of one player? If Manning goes down, we'll be just fine. We also have a fantastic Head Coach. Just look at Jim's record over the past 2 years.

Stop worrying.

Article on NFL.com indicates Polian hasn't heard anything to substantiate the rumors of need for second surgery. Let's hope that is the case and Manning can get healthy soon.

Did u read these Irsay Tweets I also posted that started Friday, Quite Ominous and foreboding and then this news on Peyton

My link

The ESPN article I linked in OP also said -- However, the sources said that no new procedure on Manning's neck is scheduled at this time.

& Yes Polian hasnt heard about need for 2nd procdure, HOWEVER I noted that was inaccurate statement by others buit Polian did , I norted supposedly say that

Peter King and Chris Mortensen got quotes and news from the Colts and Bill Polian, essentially saying Manning was being evaluated by several doctors and that no new procedure has yet been scheduled.

Before this Manning stuff broke Irsay said Polian would address the media today about tressel, so a Polian conference was already scheduled but the Manning info will steal the show now. Personally I still believe Peyton will be under center Sunday, and will continue to believe it till I turn the game on and he's not there.

I don't want to be that guy that gets everyones hopes up without solid facts but this Manning stuff started on friday 2 days before JMV1070 repeated last night on twitter and blew it up, thats another reason I think it is all taken out proportion. Again this is just my a long time fans opinion y'all believe what you choose too.

This doesn't sound good at all. With our front office's history of not fully divulging accurate injury information & misrepresenting time frames, it wouldn't surprise me if it ends up that 18 is out for the year.

The fact that Polian felt it necessary to throw in the word "honestly" when stating that he hadn't heard anything about Manning needing a second procedure, leads me to believe that the Colts know more than what they are letting on about this situation. If you are already being forthright, then you don't need to use the word "honestly" to qualify your statement.

Call me a chicken little Colts fan, but I don't feel good about this situation at all. Take the tweets by Irsay, the signing of Collins, the full back FA pickup over the weekend, and all signs indicate a "Manningless" colts team for an indefinite timeline. So long as our defense can step it up and remain healthy, I think we can compete. Our bye week isn't until week 11. Should Peyton require additional surgery, I think we are a 5-5 club at best heading into the bye. In this hypothetical, Manning comes back after the bye and gets warmed up at home against Carolina and then onto Foxborough the next week. I think we finish with 10, possibly 11 wins and get into playoffs with wildcard spot and then play at home for the superbowl for the most satisfying season in this colts' fans life. Here's to hopes and dreams!

From the Indianapolis Star:

The Indianapolis Colts will address the status of quarterback Peyton Manning by noon today, according to a team spokesman.

Also this yet another Ominous Irsay tweet was in the article

Jim Irsay weighed in on the status of Manning early this morning without lifting any of the uncertainty.

“There is nothing2say on Peyton’s status except we move cautiously n deliberately on projecting, beyond day2day,his healing process n recovery."

so does that mean its now not a day to day thing but a more chronic situation meaning needing more time for recovery
