Tennessee Politicians Getting Involved In Manning Now

This is getting stupid. I really hope he declines this mess of a team. Do politicians have nothing better to do? Are the Titans really that desperate?

I used to work for Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslem... his family are majority owners of the Pilot/Flying J chain of truck stops, and his brother Jimmy is a 15% owner of the Steelers.

Nice family and they are Tennessee football crazy and huge donors to the Volunteers program. The old man Jim Haslem played there a long time ago.

Yeah.... it's usually kinda silly when politicians get involved in this stuff but indeed, Bud Adams is pulling out all the stops and the Haslems have legit football connections.

true, he will have a major financial impact where ever he lands

Not really. Having more or better entertainment does not generate any new wealth within a local economy. Unless you think that Peyton Manning increases tourism, it will have a neutral effect on the overall economy. It will have a negative effect on some sector of the local economy, as Peyton Manning jerseys replace something else as a destination for disposable income.

Really....More National TV games?

Higher sponsor rights fees for anything Bronco

More national media.. more playoff games

New always trumps old because you can charge more.. That's why NBA players change numbers...

Manning will have an impact..

Manning or any pro athlete does not generate any wealth. More playoff games mean more revenue for the Titans, but not more money in Tennessee. Whatever people spend on football they have less to spend on everything else. Entertainment is different from manufacturing or agriculture. Those occupations create wealth. The NFL does not. It redistributes wealth created by other activities.

But the NFL has a choice of where it distributes its wealth.

How many national TV games (not on Sunday) are in Seattle

I would suggest that Thursday and Monday night games boost the local economy more than Sundays do

Home playoff games are big for the economy...and you dont get them unless you win.

Manning meant home playoff games almost every year in Indy..

More national TV games means more national media visit

Increased interest means higher rates for all forms of electronic and print media.

Plus you can fill all the seats and up prices to sit, eat. stay overnight and park on a winning team

moreso than a losing team

I think the city officials in Denver might disgaree with you..

Most of the things you list come out of the local economy. Sure, a few network people will stay in local hotels and eat in restaurants. But almost all the spend is local. Home playoff games are good for certain business, bad for others.

Personally, I think he's going to Tennessee.

how does the governor have Peyton's cell number? are they bffs?

Haslem's family has donated in the 8-figure range to the University of Tennessee.... that would probably get you in touch with Peyton. But I'm guessing they were well acquainted from his UT days anyway.

Let the politicians do what they want. Football raises city morale and the politicians want that. It's not the main reason they want Peyton, because odds are they're fans too, so I think they want Peyton as fans, not as politicians.

As I said in another thread, what has Peyton done for Indy? Think about it...seriously without malice, but honestly. Where would Indy be without the last decade of wins with Peyton? The Superbowl, hosting the Superbowl, LOS for that matter. The local jobs, the economy, the morale.

Folks can make jokes of the TN legislation all you want, but perhaps they see the potential of all of this and would like it for the people in TN as well. Those looking at the big picture are not underestimating the impact.

    • I'm not too worried about our offense; I'm just worried about our defense. Coming in, we all knew our secondary was bottom of the barrel. Now, we are seeing our run D become bottom of the barrel, too. Our whole defense is trash. Buck is out now, and I can't imagine our D getting any better while he is out. We will have to win games by shootouts, and AR isn't that accurate for shootouts yet. PS Please let Pittman pick his game up. I need him for my fantasy teams.
    • My hopes are high but... There is such a thing as a pedigree. You know like growing up at NFL practices, becoming a HS prodigy as a Sophomore, all those college starts. Peyton was replaced for the 2nd half in his Last college game for performance haha, by Tee Martin.  And wouldn't most agree that at some point in Mannings 2nd year we understood he was a Great pick with a exceptionally high ceiling, flutter balls not withstanding?  I believe the jury was still out on Josh Allen after one full season of starting whether he was a good pick, a true "franchise" QB.  AR is so raw, I expect that is where he will be by seasons end. We will still have worry   Will AR ever be calm under pressure, be able to read defenses and get us into the right play? Throw accurately, with touch, and on time?
    • Our GM came out and said that he was sick of missing the playoffs. Last year we were 1 play away from making them. Your expectations for the team and Ballard’s are different.   Also the instant gratification angle has been said since 2019 season. Regardless of if you think the timeline should start from Ballard’s first year, or the first season after the Luck retirement, there has been enough time that has passed that makes it viable for fans to want better results than starting 0-2, giving up 500 rushing yards in 2 games, and losing to a 3rd round  back up QB who had only been in the offense for 3 weeks.
    • Well, I thought Stroud was clearly superior to AR as a pro prospect (I'm not a modern-day mobility snob), so I see no desperation in trading up to 1 to get him.   I didn't advocate trading up to 1, so I'm not blaming Ballard, but I can understand if others want to make that argument though.   I'm not going to die on a hill over the word desperation pick to describe AR.  I'll describe it as expanding tolerances for what level of college competence you expect a player to come into the NFL with...and you expand them now because you failed at finding a QB for the past 5 years.   And this stuff about high ceiling is a bit of a false reason.  Lots of kids walking the streets right now have higher ceilings....if a team took the time to teach a kid everything and take the risk he never reaches his ceiling.  The difference is that the guys picked in the top 5 should come out of college equipped with a certain mastery level of skills and plenty of experience, or its not much different than taking a great athlete, because he has a great athletic ceiling, and begin by teaching him the basics of how to throw a ball.
    • Chicago doesn't look that good to me in terms of what they can do on offense. I don't think they have what Green Bay or Houston has at RB. It's mostly just Caleb and a messed up OL. I think if there's any opportunity to get things right it will be against this opponent. I think we can and should beat this team as long as AR doesn't turn the ball over and we can get any semblance of improved run D.
