Yes, today officially starts baseball season!

Yeah and so far the Cubs have not made any moves to pickup anyone good. We lost Cole Hamels as well. If we stay as is, I see the Cubs being a .500 team in 2020. We do not have the starting pitching or bullpen anymore to win consistently IMO. Lester is not an ACE anymore. That will equate to good and bad baseball all season. Our lineup remains solid (Bryant, Rizzo, Baez, Contreras) and will win us some games that we shouldn't win but even they were inconsistent last season. Ever since we won it all in 2016 going 103-58 my expectations going into 2017, 2018, and 2019 have been high. Going into 2020 I am setting them lower and say we go 81-81. Maybe David Ross will light a fire under these Cubs but I will believe it when I see it. Maddon was great but did wear out his welcome so who knows.

The Cards to me are the team to beat in the NL Central. They won the division last season and I see no reason why they won't do it again by winning 90 games or so. Brewers will probably finish 2nd again and win around 90 as well. Reds have improved and will be similar to the Cubs = .500. Pirates will be the cellar dweller.

On paper as of now the Dodgers and Yankees look so much better than everyone else.

I am surprised by the Cubs' lack of off season moves.  You have that kind of core on offense, you need to make some moves to take advantage of the window that starting to close.

Cardinals haven't done much, either.  Yes a minor trade for a pitching prospect and they've emptied out a crowded outfield a bit, and lost Ozuna.  I think they are banking on an improved season from Matt Carpenter, pitching, defense and also a few more HRs and RBI from Goldschmidt.  Still will be a challenge to score runs, unless we have a breakout year from some of the young outfielders.

Brewers could win 90+, or finish around .500.  They still need starting pitching and they lost some offense, too.

Reds will be much improved and as you say, the Pirates are at the bottom again.

Dodgers look better and the Yankees are still strong...but, it's a long season and lots can happen.  I'm predicting one of either the Dodgers or Yankees don't make it to the WS this year.

Losing Ozuna isn't good but I like your pitching better than ours. When the Cards got Goldy last offseason that was huge too with your lineup. I am not sold on our pitching at all, it scares me to be honest. Lester is not an ACE anymore and older, Darvish is inconsistent, Hendricks is inconsistent, and our bullpen is a mess. I miss having a Chapman that can close games.

The Reds do look good on paper, could be a sleeper?

So, more rules changes for this baseball season...what are your thoughts?

From the league’s official release:

Three-Batter Minimum: The Official Baseball Rules have been amended to require the starting or any relief pitcher to pitch to a minimum of three batters, including the batter then at bat (or any substitute batter), until such batters are put out or reach base, or until the offensive team is put out, unless the substitute pitcher sustains injury or illness which, in the umpire crew chief’s judgment, incapacitates him from further play as a pitcher.  The three-batter minimum will become effective in 2020 Spring Training beginning on Thursday, March 12th.

Rosters through August 31st and Postseason: Active Roster limits from Opening Day through August 31st and including Postseason games shall be increased from 25 to 26.  In addition, Clubs will be permitted to carry a maximum of 13 pitchers from Opening Day through August 31st (plus Postseason games).

September Rosters: From September 1st through the end of the Championship Season (including any tiebreaker games), all Clubs must carry 28 players on the Active Roster. In addition, Clubs will be permitted to carry a maximum of 14 pitchers during this period.

Two-Way Player Designation: Players who qualify as “Two-Way Players” may appear as pitchers during a game without counting toward a Clubs’ pitcher limitations. A player will qualify as a “Two-Way Player” only if he accrues both: (i) at least 20 Major League innings pitched; and (ii) at least 20 Major League games started (as a position player or designated hitter) with at least three plate appearances in each of those games, in either the current Championship Season or the prior Championship Season (for 2020 only, this will include 2019 as well as 2018).  The Club must designate that player as a “Two-Way Player” in advance of that game. Once a Club designates a qualified “Two-Way Player” that designation will remain in effect, and cannot change, for the remainder of that Championship Season and Postseason.

Position Players Pitching: Any player may appear as a pitcher following the 9th inning of an extra inning game, or in any game in which his team is losing or winning by more than six runs when the player enters as a pitcher.

Extra Player Rule: The previous “26th player rule” will be replaced with the “27th player rule” for all applicable Championship Season games prior to September 1st. The 27th player shall not count toward any pitcher roster limits described above.  Thus, a Club may designate 14 pitchers in games under circumstances where the Major League Rules would permit a 27th Active player.

Injured List Reinstatements and Option Period for Pitchers: Clubs may not reinstate pitchers or Two-Way Players from the Injured List until 15 days have elapsed from the date of the initial placement for such injury – an increase from 10 days.  In addition, the option period for pitchers will be lengthened from 10 days to 15 days.

Reduction in Challenge Time: Managers will now have up to 20 seconds to challenge a play instead of 30.

*************************************************************************

Some of these are MLB's answers to try and speed up the games.  To me, the beauty of baseball is that there is no clock.  The game can flow based upon what's happening on the field.

Now, I don't hear anyone complaining about NFL games lasting 3 hours or more.  I can't stand the last 2-3 minutes of basketball games, because of all the timeouts, fouls to stop the clock, etc.  Takes away from the flow of the game IMO.

But, if they really want to speed up baseball, then in addition to the pitch clock, they need to deal with the batters who step out of the box after EVERY PITCH to adjust their batting gloves, helmets, etc.

I would propose that if the batter didn't swing at a pitch, then there's no need for him to step out and adjust his gloves, because he didn't move his hands to swing the bat.  If a player doesn't swing at a pitch, then he CAN'T step out and adjust his gloves.  If he does once, he gets warned...a second infraction earns him an automatic strike...third infraction then he's automatically out for that at-bat.  Believe me, this would reduce game times by 15-20 minutes, at least!

But, they never blame long games on the batters...but they do blame the pitchers taking time between pitches (some are terrible at this), pitching changes, mound visits, etc.  But, mound visits, pitching changes, etc. are part of the game's strategy.  Now, a pitcher must face at least 3 batters to cut down on mid-inning pitching changes.

We'll see what happens, but I don't think these changes will shorten games by much.

The more and more the Astros try to explain about their sign stealing scandal, they look worse. It is like a liar, just telling more lies lmao . Many will agree with me, their WS Title should be vacated. They cheated like no other team has and got caught. The 2018 Red Sox are about to go through this too.

2016 - Chicago Cubs

Thank you for posting all the rules changes. I don't like the 3-batter rule. It seems to be fundamentally changing the way baseball is played in the later innings. I don't like it. Is this the end of the specialist pitchers who come in to face only one batter? I believe we will be discussing problems caused by this rule a lot this season.

I do like increasing the roster sizes for the regular season and the playoffs.

As for challenges, do you guys believe that 20 seconds is sufficient?

I agree that more should be done to have batters stay in the batter's box to save time.

I read that baseball was also considering making changes to the playoffs. Does anyone know exactly what those are?

This is sure to be an interesting baseball season. I'm looking forward to it.

They are thinking about adding 2 more teams to each league that qualify for the playoffs. Instead of 5 it would be 7 teams. I don't like that at all. It takes away how important the Regular Season is IMO. 5 teams is perfect and the way they have it now is perfect. If they want to change the Wildcard game to best out of 3 I would go along with that, other than that I would leave it alone.

I agree...7 in each league is too many.

Wild Card should be a best of 3, not a one and done...seems too "sudden death" for the two teams who earned a wild card spot to have it be just one game.

I was disappointed in the prepared statements and remarks.  They've had a month to think about how they were going to respond publicly, and no one really took ownership of it.  Closest was Verlander, who said he now wishes he has said something at the time.  Seems the pitchers for the Astros would be upset...what if they found out the Dodgers were stealing their signs?

It's a mess and it is something we'll be hearing about for a long time...too bad, since this dampens the excitement of Spring Training.  I recall being excited for the organization after they did a total tear down and rebuild.  They had and still have players I really enjoy watching...Altuve, Bregman, Springer.  Now, I can't watch them with the same perspective...much like the juiced up hitters a few years ago.

I'm coming around to the idea of making them vacate the 2017 Title.  As far as the Red Sox go, we'll have to see how much cheating they did.  I haven't read anything about them actually stealing signs using video, just that their manager was involved in the Astros thing while he coached in Houston.

Not only have the Cubs lost Hammels(although he wasn’t the same anymore after last surgery) but....

Zobrist is most likely done.

Castellanos is a Red now.

Bryant may be getting traded for who knows.

Kimbrel is a huge question mark.

Lester is a huge question mark.

Its going to get interesting.

Also been reading that there was a lot of friction the last couple years between the front office and Madden, which lead to his dismissal. Madden said they stopped letting him do things “his way” in 2017.....Theo said they noticed complacency setting in and players no longer putting forth their best effort, which carried out onto the field. Interesting, as much as I used to like Madden, I’m siding with Theo on this one, the World Series hangover lasted too long and it was evident the last couple seasons for sure. Hope Ross can get them back after it before it’s too late for this core.

It is hard telling what trades we will make but to me we do need an ACE Pitcher. Contreras may be a great trading piece for that, a lot of teams would love have to have a very good catcher, he is borderline great. They are hard to come by. No way am I trading Bryant, Rizzo, or Baez. That is just me.

Yeah it’s hard to say. There was a lot of Contreras trade talk that fizzled out, now I’m hearing a lot of Bryant And a prospect  (Wich is insulting I think)for Arenado talk. Both players are unhappy with their organizations, Bryant due to losing his service time grievance and Arenado not happy with direction of the Rockies. Don’t get me wrong, big fan of Bryant and would hate to see him go, but he was not the same last season either, I’m sure injuries played a part but he just didn’t seem as focused, IDK. I also think trading Contreras would be a horrible idea, one of the top 3 catchers in the league that runners fear stealing on IMO, but I know the team has needs to. Sucks.

I'm trying to be optimistic on the Cardinals chance of making the post season in 2020.  It's tough though.  Losing Ozuna stinks.   They haven't really added much.  The Cardinals have been resilient in the past, so I have hope for 2020.

I expect the division to be even tougher than 2019.

My guess at this point:

Cubs - 91-71

Reds - 86-76

Cardinals - 85-77

Brewers - 80-82

Pirates - 71-91

Well the Sports writers mostly are picking the Cards followed closely by the Reds. Picking the Cubs in fourth in some articles. Guess what we never know what we truly have till Allstar break and neither does anyone else. But you could be pleasantly surprised. I'm glad in a sense Ozuna isn't there although I like him. Im ready to see younger players getting the shot. I know O'Neal can duplicate Ozuna if not exeed him. Carlson could be even better power from both sides . Brad Miller gives them a left handed power hitter off the bench. Martinez seems healthy for first time in two years. Im excited to see what kind of lineup they have. Lane Thomas is no slouch either. If Bader doesn't produce they have plenty to replace him with.

Well, my Cardinals have been very stagnant, too.  They were ready to play Ozuna around $16 million per to re-sign, but he goes to Atlanta.  Then they say they don't want to spend money on a left handed bat.  What about that 16 or so million you were ready to spend?  Geez...just raise the price of a Bud at the game by 50 cents and you'll make 16 million in a month!

Part of that is Carlson , he's most definitely the real deal and switch hitter to boot. If he doesn't start the season up north he will be there before the years out. Regardless who they go with the Outfield D will be better for it both with Ozuna and Martinez being gone. I also like the signing of Brad Miller for left handed bench bat with power. I also like the balance in the pitching , wont be RH dominate we have plenty of LH talent to go with.

Been really busy , will be here more when games start. Just trying to get things caught up around the house and so on. Good to see you too . The Cubs really need a good starting pitcher and also a good middle reliever unless they have those out of the Farm system. I think they would be ignorant to trade Contreras . That's a no no , catchers like that don't grow on trees.

I am a diehard Cubs fan, and who picked the Cards to win the NL Central last season, that's right - me. I am picking them again. Cubs had a nice little mini-run between 2015-2018 winning the most games in the league and winning our WS in 2016 but those days are over.

In that 4 year stretch we won more than anyone:

2015 - 97-65, Lost in NLCS

2016 - 103-58, (Division Champs) Won WS

2017 - 92-70, (Division Champs) Lost in NLCS

2018 - 95-68, Lost in WildCard game

-Time flies!

We have our work cut out for us now to get back to being a contender.

By the way, glad to see you here again my brother.

I agree 100%. Problem is they may need trade a great player to get an ACE. We have 4 great/very good players = Bryant, Rizzo, Baez, and Contreras. I don't want to trade any of them but 1 of them will have to go IMO to get an ACE.

Early prediction = Dodgers win WS over Yankees 4-3 in a thriller. Not calling it a conspiracy theory, but after the Red Sox just gave them Betts for a Ham sandwich and how everyone thinks the Dodgers got cheated out of a WS, I can see this going down. Yankees make it to the WS because they got cheated by the Astros and Red Sox too. 2 huge markets as well.

That seems like a good prediction.   Dodgers have further separated themselves from the resy in the NL.

I'll stick with my central predictions:

Cubs - 91-71

Reds - 86-76

Cardinals - 85-77

Brewers - 80-82

Pirates - 71-91

The Mets are a bit of a mess. We had hired Beltran as manager but he was forced to resign, as he was involved in the sign-stealing scandal. The fans also want the team sold but man who was going to buy the team backed out of the deal. Let's see how the season goes.

All the best to you and the family.

Yes I don't know how losing Beltran will effect them . Time will tell and yes I agree not fair to fans if they don't make a real effort to put a winner on the field. We shall see how it goes .

Not been much going on as far as I see . Puig still out there as far as I know.

Everyone is talking about the Astros and the Commissioner's lack of punishment.  Still some good players available and I'm sure teams will need to add due to spring training injuries.

    • I’d like Crossby!   I really like Mitchell, but I just don’t see more youth being a good thing for our CB room. Even if the Sneed thing is made up I still think we should go for a vet.    I hope we can get Cooper in the 2nd. I’d prefer a WR (or Bowers) at 15, but right now I think we’re looking at DE.    Powers-Johnson looks greats, but of all the things we could do I think OL is probably the least likely at 15.    Lots of needs. Safety is probably the biggest, but I don’t think any of them are worth the 15th overall.
    • @Solid84   Still holding out hope we trade our R1P15 to LV for Maxx Crosby give them draft capital to move up for their QB.    If we sit at P15, draft CB Quinyon Mitchell.  Latest report seen was the Colts haven't even talked trade for Sneed.  False news, who knows, time will tell?    If Mitchell is gone before P15 then see a trade back and draft WLB Edgerrin Cooper or OL Jackson Powers-Johnson.
    • I like it overall, but I don't think there's a snowballs chance in hell we're drafting Kinchens after his atrocious Combine. With a RAS of 2.27 he's not even a blip on Ballard's radar lol.
    • Sorry late to the party line chat on Page 57 of 94   Skyy Moore, deleted that draft class and notes but Moore seemed to have some potential but wasn't sold on him.  Viewed Moore as an average receiver not much more.  I wouldn't trade for him.   If you were looking to trade for any WR, I would suggest targeting the Packer's Dontayvion Wicks.    As for some of these other comments that I have read up and not going to ready through 30 pages.  Colts spent 200M on most of their own (top NFL) players,    Recent news I saw is that the Colts haven't had any communication talks about trading for Sneed.  How true that is or not to be seen.  Seems the Colts have done a lot spending 200M on their own and doubt we have much cap space left to sign a big-name player like Sneed.  Still haven't seen latest cap space figures since our latest signing.     The Colts build through the draft and those expectations will not change this season.  Again, our organization was lucky enough to sign some of our best positional players.  Sadly, not everyone can get resigned and do expect Blackmon to move on.  Latest rumor is Blackmon signs with the Bills.
    • The problem is Ballard drafts traitsy raw guys more often than not, so by the time AR is ready we likely won't know if the guys he drafted are IT. That issue then gets compounded by Ballard not using FA to bring in guys who work NOW. THEN if the guys he drafts miss, we'll be waiting another 2-4 years on the next batch... see the problem?   That's fair I guess, but Armstead and Huff were signed for ~$17m/year.   Huff was the 2nd most efficient pass rusher IN THE LEAGUE in 2023 behind only Micah Parson - that's better than Myles Garrett, TJ Watt, Nick Bosa you name 'em. For $17m that's worth taking a shot at, because even if he only produces at a good level he'd still likely be a Jonathan Greenard who signed for $19m. IF he works out though he'd be the bargain of the decade.   Armstead has already played with Buckner and he would be a big upgrade over Grover Stewart for $4m more per year than what we signed Grover for.
