Ranking the defensive players

If you had to rank the defensive guys on the team currently from top to bottom, how would you rank them from the talent level? I would also include in the rankings, a built in ladder for the experience level and the learning curve IE: T.G. Green vs a veteran player

1. Davis -hands down #1

2. Anderson-- Based from his rookie season before his knee injury

3. Walden-- most consistent IMO

4. Adams-- Slowing down??

5. Geathers--Has shown talent frequently but still has a curve

6. Green---- it gets tougher past this point to rank

7. Butler-- up and down but just enough when healthy

8. Robinson-- maybe more hopeful here than actual talent. Belong at the slot

9. Langford--going off his production more last season than this one

10. Kerr-- flashes then disappears more than I would like

11. Ridegway-- young and has shown some flashes

12.Parry-- paired with a healthy Anderson, he has produced. Without Anderson, just not as good.

13. McGill-- flashes talent but needs more consistency

14. Mathis--old and cooked

15. Jones-- wth has happened to this once sought after talent.

16. Ayers-- I probably should have him ranked higher, just haven't seen enough of him

17. E. Jackson-- speed and youth, should probably also be ranked higher, need to see more of him

18. Morrison-- young and lacking experience. Slower than I would like to see

19. DQ Jackson--getting old fast. SOlid last season

20.Melvin-- flashed talent and made several mistakes. Good depth and potential to play into a outside spot next year

21. Maggitt--too raw to know what we have

22. McNary ---dead last and by far the worst of the defense.

Obviously this is a very subjective list but one point I can make out here is that we have 1 A list player with Davis, 2-3 young up and comers that have shown enough talent to possibly make that A list, a lot of players that are just average and role players and then more than enough aged players that need replaced next season and then McNary who just is the weakest link on this team, hands down. What's your assessment of the list?

I see 13-14 keepers.
Vontae is VG.
With 4 - 5 very young guys that have really good potential.
The rest of the keepers could continue to improve and be part of a Solid Team D.

13-14 keepers may be optimistic unless your are saying some of those for depth. I can agree that we have the potential for 4-5 of them being really good potential and once we get 4-5 really good players on the field for defense at one time, that should pull the average guys up into rounding up a solid defense. If only we can find that one superstar pass rush player that teams have to game plan for like we had in the days of Freeney. Right now, I am not sure that teams have to game plan extensively for Davis, just don't look to throw at him very often is the game plan imo but nobody on the oline has to account for anyone in particular and that makes our defense look so pedestrian and the opposing offense completes throws at will too often.

1 elite pass rusher and just an average linebacker that can cover the TE over the middle would do us wonders. Monachino has to step up his game and scheme better until we get those players imo.

If we're talking Butler at slot then I'd possibly flip him with Green. Just saw a stat saying something like QB's have a rating of 34 when going his way there, but he's been solid there his whole Colts career. It's a shame Robinson's better suited there too, they're both great slot guys.

And I wouldn't necessarily drop Parry but I do think if given the chance McGill and Ayers could be considered more talented.

I like your list.  I do think McGill should be higher up though.  Walden is having a good year but I think I'd still put Adams ahead of him.  I hope there all ready to go Sunday!  Colts need a W!  Just my opinion!

Thanks. I had a tough time ranking them after the first few. You could argue that several of them should be a few up or a few down. The trouble I had was the young guys and how much time they've had vs how much they've missed time for injury. Anderson showed tremendous potential last season but we haven't been able to see him do much yet this year and now another injury. I just kinda wanted to see how others rated these guys we have as well as no list is correct because it's so subjective.

I wished I could list all of our young kids up into the top 10 and all over the vets but some are just too raw still.

1. Adams - defensive MVP almost every game

2. Davis - stud corner

3. Butler - makes plays at high level

4. Jackson - does the dirty work in the trenches, cleans up errors from others

5. Kerr - eats up blockers, disrupts pocket, plays sideline to sideline

6. Jones - eats up blockers, owns his space

7. McGill - disruptive inside rusher, upped his strength and energy output

8. Parry - goes one against 2 every play and gets blocked out of recognition.

9. Langford - steady and gets into the action on plays

10. Anderson - gets off one-on-one blocks & tackles well

11. Walden - steady and gets into the action on plays

12. Geathers - good tackler, needs to improve his coverage skills

13. Ayers - demonstrating wide range of player abilities
14. Green - using his speed to close on plays, tackling with decent form

15. Robinson - more experienced and game savvy than known

16. Mathis - pains me to have him this far down the list

17. E. Jackson - has speed, range & energy

18. Ridgeway - needs to improve his strength & leverage

19. Melvin - developing player with good size and energy

20. Maggitt - good size and energy

21. McNary -  very average

22. Morrison - straight ahead tackler

I found it very difficult to order them in this way. So very subjective. Interesting exercise.

Good points made. Yeah, I found it very difficult to do myself. I just think it is interesting to find out where everyone else sees our defense as an individual part. You see a few near the top that I don't see up there but that doesn't mean either of us is wrong. There is something that each of us look at and value more than the other but all in all, I think we are all close to agreement of the parts. We need better parts.
