[Speculation] Welcome to Indy LeGarrette Blount?

I'm not sure why most don't get this... Even Adrian Peterson couldn't tear up a defense behind our offensive line..

Sure he could get some more yards but the RB's can't do it all themselves. Wouldn't matter who we get. I big bruiser RB like Blount would be the best though becuase our RB's get smashed every time they run the ball (not catch the ball).

There are some offensive lines out there that make these very below average running back talents look great and then there is the Colts O-line and some other teams that the line play can make a decent running back or above average back look like they are a lost cause.

Not many goods backs with NFL experience left out there.  Blount was our best shot at adding some instant, proven talent to our roster at the RB position and yet Colts fans were whining about him - "he's a thug", "he hit someone in college".  Get over it!! Put some big boy pants on.  Blount was exactly what the Colts needed.  Most available running backs with experience are pretty banged up, out of the league for a while, or don't have much in the tank.  Darrin Reaves is still available.  hahaha!!
So we have our practice squad - Zurlon Tipton and Jeff Demps.  UGH!  Belichick has outcoached Pagano again - and I loathe Belichick.

So why can't the Colts' coaching staff develop an O-line?  The Patriots tradeded their best lineman, Mankins.  It took a few weeks until the line gelled but they are now hitting on all cylinders.   I also read their O-line coach just retired. How did that staff do this? They have a rookie playing center?  What is missing from the Colts organization?

And that is the exact question that the Colts can't seem to find an answer to....

Terrible decision from the Colts not to go after him.

The Colts are in desperate need of a running back and he would have been a low risk option with a potential high reward. He would have cost almost nothing and he wouldn't have the time to become a distraction, he would only have been here until the end of the season.

When Bradshaw was healthy I felt the Colts were too one-dimensional for a deep playoff run. Now, there is absolutely no chance.

He cleared waivers. It's cheaper to sign a player after he's cleared waivers than claim him.

So what was the point of someone claiming that the player signed with whom he wanted?

The Colts could have had Blount, that fact remains. If the running back situation is dire, why would management fail to sign a good fit over money?

The question was rhetorical, I hope you realize that.

Yes, I know! haha Still wish the Colts could do something... Maybe it is coaching.

I think it might be the scheme.

Peps run blocking scheme just isn't working or it could be anything else. Not sure

This is the type of stuff that cracks me up and keeps me coming back to this forum.

1) Blount quit on his team 4 days ago.

2) Blount got caught smoking weed with Bell less than 24 hours before a game less than 4 months ago.

3) He has been on 4 teams in 5 years - something is amiss with the guy.

4) Steeler players reportedly wanted him gone before he walked off early.

5) His talent & skill set is similar to a back that the Colts already have on the roster.

6) He does not know the Colts system - how long before they could actually put him in a game?

7) They have RB's on the PS they can bring up already who know the team & system

8) Exactly how long does it take to become a distraction?  Seems with Blount - not long at all

Yeah, can't possibly imagine why the Colts did not look his way

Most on this thread dismiss all of that because he'd apparently be the missing link in our run game...

We are always interested in terrible RBs with the exception of Ahmad Bradshaw. So this makes sense. haha

I ran out of likes pgt_rob & I know Blount has returned to NE, but that post of yours is still hysterical man or should I say accurate? Same difference.

4 thumbs up for making me lmao...

[You can add Edgerrin James & Joseph Addai to the protected list of special or decent INDY backs along with Bradshaw too.]

Okay, I'll play along & I will even concede your valid point willingly bravo4460, but the question still remains does GM Grigson have the courage to start selecting linemen in the draft then?

Fans don't control that owner Jim Irsay does.

I'm not convinced that the guys on the line are the biggest issue. I think it all starts with our vanilla blocking scheme that our line isn't good enough to overcome.

So, do you think it's a teaching/instruction issue vs a manpower/lack of talent issue Shive? I'm just asking for your opinion here.

I only ask because Luck still is forced to move to often. I want a clean pocket like Brady's got usually & INDY does not have that.

That's the problem: An unstable pocket that doesn't give Luck enough time to do his damage. And now without Bradshaw on blitz pickup, it's gonna make Andrew's life hades on earth.

His talent and skill-set is similar to the backs on the Colts roster? HAHAHAHAHA! Richardson is literally one of the worst running backs in the league and Boom hasn't looked much better in his limited playing time.

Who cares if the practice squad guys "know the system". They have never played any snaps for a reason, they are terrible.

How long does it take for him to become a distraction? The Pats managed to do it and he absolutely smashed the Colts last year.

Weed? Just lol. Don't we have a safety who served a four-game suspension for something 10x worse than * weed?

Give me a break and don't bother coming back to the forum if you cannot understand simple concepts.

Having a huge game against the Colts doesn't mean you are good. Trent's best game of his career was against the Colts.

I don't know if there are any answers to creating a decent run game at this moment. Past the trade deadline, anyone good has been snatched up .... Just gotta let Trent run and hope for the best I guess .....

For the love of all that is Holy.  You smashed nothing apart.  No one with an ounce of a clue would think you bettered my argument at all.

I gave you 8 solid reasons why the Colts would have any interest.  Any of those on my list by itself  would be reason enough to say no to the guy.  Add the 8 of them together collectively - is it really that hard to comprehend why they would have no interest?

But let me address your comments

The Colts already have a lumbering back.  Richardson may not be all that but Blount certainly does not bring something radically different to what they already have.

Herron - in his limited playing time has actually looked pretty good.  Not sure how you can watch the team and think otherwise.

I think you saying the practice squad guys are terrible without ever having seen them in a real game is just a touch premature.  And what is worse, and by that I mean a really dumb point, is you minimizing them knowing the system.  Blount would not be ready to play in the near future.  Your choices are two - put Blount in and tell the defense it will be a run or risk the franchise because he did not catch a check and got Luck killed.  So yes, knowing the system is kind of important.

He was the Steelers for what an entire month before he got picked up with weed while hanging with their best RB.  Apparently it does not take long.

Not sure I follow the Landry and his issue with Blount.  So having a dumba$% on the roster means adding another is not big deal?  Is that the correlation?  Some solid thinking there.

I don't think you understand that a very good o-line and scheme can make a very average RB look amazing. Take the Shanahan years in Denver. They had consistent 1000 yd rushers that nobody had ever heard of and were never relevant when they left. You plug Trent into the Pats' system and he'd be amazing. Our rushing issues have very little to do with the guy in the backfield and more to do with the guys up front.

You think Boom has looked pretty good? I've watched him average a little over three yards in garbage time in a few games. If that impresses you then you don't know what you're looking at.

I didn't say Blount was a different style than Richardson, I said he was BETTER, which he is.

Regarding the system, players get thrown into new systems all the time. I don't remember Richardson's pass protection being too bad last year when he came over in Week 3.

He was caught with weed in Pit, but as I said, the Pats kept him in check and I'm sure the Colts are more than capable of doing that.

You don't want him to sign because he was caught with weed, but you don't mind seeing Landry on the roster who was caught with something much worse. I guess you don't see the contradiction here, but I don't really expect you to.

I guess Donald Brown was running behind a different o-line than Richardson last year when he was earning triple the yards on half the carries?

Time to admit Richardson just ain't that good, bud.

166 yards/4 touchdowns. Does that sound familiar to you at all? We get it he's a poor sport, he's a ME guy, he smokes natural plants, doesn't know our system. All valid points indeed. But the sad truth is that even while having all those negatives, he is still way better than any other option we currently have on our team. What's it matter if you know the system if you just plain suck at football. We are begging for failure by moving forward with Trent AND we let the Pats go and get another weapon that they've already proven can wreck us come playoff time. I can't wait to see the moment when Irsay has had enough with this staff.

Yeah, can't possibly imagine why the Colts did not look his way

Hmmm, lets look at those inane reasons:

1) Blount quit on his team 4 days ago. - He left at the last play of the game when Ben Roethlisberger was going to take a knee.  The Steelers hadn't used Blount the whole game.  They handed the ball to Bell 33 times and the handed it to Blount ZERO times.  It was an obvious snub by the Steelers and Blount knew it.  I'd be mad too.  The Steelers didn't include him in their scheme and so they didn't need him on the last play when Roethlisberger was going to take a knee.  Yeah, it was bad protocol but understandable.  I think the Steelers suck for excluding him the whole night.

2) Blount got caught smoking weed with Bell less than 24 hours before a game less than 4 months ago. - Give me a freaking break.  If you want to exclude every NFL player who smoked dope, you would get rid of about 1/2 the league.  Based on your logic, you would hire any of these guys who smoked dope: Ricky Williams, Josh Gordon, Adrian Peterson, Von Miller, Aldon Smith, etc, etc, etc.  Ask any player and they'll tell you about 1/2 the players smoke dope.  Btw, Mikel Leshoure, who was also mentioned as a possibility has also be arrested for marijuana possession - twice.  You know how many times Blount has been arrested?  Once.  There are many players in the NFL with multiple arrests.  You need to come on down from your ivory tower and live in the real world.  Stuff like this happens, it's not the end of the world

3) He has been on 4 teams in 5 years - something is amiss with the guy. - If you knew anything about him, you would know he never played for the Titans.  He made the initial 53-man roster but then was waived to make room for some linebackers that Tennessee needed.  He was picked up off waivers by Tampa Bay, which was the first team he actually played for.  Blount was traded to NE for a Jeff Demps (who is now on our practice squad (ironic?) and a 7th round pick).  After playing with the Patriots in 2013 and getting the exact same yardage and touchdowns as Stevan Ridley, Blount was a free agent.  Since they already had Ridley and Shane Vareen, they went cheap and wouldn't spend a lot of money on Blount.  As a free agent, he signed with the Steeler who offered him 2 years and $3.85 million.  He set NFL and team records with both TB and NE.

4) Steeler players reportedly wanted him gone before he walked off early. - And some wanted him there.  Not everybody gets along 100% with every player.  That was an ignorant statement of why we shouldn't have signed him.  "I know him, I know he's not a selfish guy, he's a team guy," said safety Mike Mitchell.

5) His talent & skill set is similar to a back that the Colts already have on the roster. - Nonsense!!  TRich sucks.  He hasn't performed since we signed him - that's why we went and got Bradshaw.

6) He does not know the Colts system - how long before they could actually put him in a game? - RBs pick up the game quickly.  Having played for TB, NE, and Pittsburgh, he would have been able to get in pretty quickly.

7) They have RB's on the PS they can bring up already who know the team & system - Yeah, RBs with ZERO NFL experience.  Blount has been thoroughly tested.  He's been a starter and he's been a back-up.  He's played in playoff games.  He is seasoned.

8) Exactly how long does it take to become a distraction?  Seems with Blount - not long at all - That is pure speculation!

If you watched the playoffs last year, you saw Blount roll over the Colts.  Blount was exactly what the Colts needed.  Too bad Grigson, Pagano, or Irsay were too stupid or too slow to see it.  That's why the Colts will be watching the Super Bowl from the comfort of their own couches again this year.

Great post. Blount's "baggage" is over played I think. He was great in NE last year and ran like a bull. No team is made up of 53 saints. This was a calculated risk that was worth it given our RB situation. But perhaps Grig is a little gun shy given how things have turned out with Trent ...

Inane?  Those reasons are all red flags.  They individually would give a team pause for siging the guy but collectively, is it really that hard to see why the Colts and most other teams would pass on him?

1) Your reasoning on this point is laughable - basically granting him license to act as a petulant child.  So the Steelers suck for not using him when what they were doing and who they were doing it with worked unbelieably well.  We are clearly of a different generation.

2) Dear God.  I am not making a value statement on dope smokers or not letting those who have gotten caught not play in the league.  I am simply saying that he put his team in a bad position by doing this with Bell in the hours before a game.  He clearly lacked judgement and had influence over a key player - another giant red flag.

3)  Where the hell do you think I don't know about the guy.  He has traveled all around the league in a short period of time - that is not up for debate.  I am not sure how all the justiifcation of his stints in other places you have presented alters anything from the simple fact that he can't stay anywhere for any length of time.  That may be from his talent level or the distraction he causes but either way - you know what it is - a red flag.

4) There is nothing in my argument that can be remotelyt considered ignorant.  Nothing.  You can disagree but telling me it is ignorant simply ain't true.  The fact is some players wanted him off the team.  I fully grasp the concept that not everyone will all get along but to the point where there were those who wanted him gone - that is a giant red flag.

5) I am not even close to making the case that TRich is nothing but a disappointment. But the Colts already have a big lumbering back on the roster and what Blount would bring is not all that different.

6) Other than his obvious knuckleheadedness, this point is the most glaring to me.  Picking up the system is one thing when you have camp to do it.  How long would it take for him to understand the offense and get the checks that Luck has to be able to use?  At some point it the investment is not justified.

7) PS guys with zero experience?  That does not mean that they cannot play.  Everyone has zero experience at some point.  And the fact that they know what their role would be in audible situation at this point makes them more valuable than someone off the street.  Blount is seasoned - in other teams systems.

Not sure where you get the idea that I don't watch the games because I am familiar with what Blount did to Indy last year.  You say Blount is exactly what was needed - I simply & strongly disagree.  He is a midling talent with a penchant for being a dumba#$.  He has, and here is that phrase again, all kinds of red flags.

You want him - fine.  All I have done is present a case as to why a team would pass on him.  Not that hard to figure why he was deemed not worth it by Indy.

Once again, you seem to have a lot of opinions and zero facts.  Try to back up your claims with facts.

1. He left on the last play with just a few seconds left when Ben Roethlisberger was going to take a knee.  He left knowing the Steelers were going to win but they excluded him the whole night.  This is much different than Dez Bryant walking off the field with 1:21 left and the Cowboys losing to the Packers.  This is much different than Randy Moss walking off the field instead of sticking around for the on-sides kick as the Vikings were losing to the Redskins.  This is much different than Bill Belichick walking off the field before the end of the Super Bowl as the Patriots lost to the Giants, thus ending the perfect season.  Those guys left the game with losing teams on the field.  Blount left knowing the Steelers would win.  The game was over.  Roethlisberger was taking a knee.  And Blount did it one time.  ONCE!  He didn't have a history of this.  He did not have a history of being a "petulant child".  Blount was known as a team player.  Too bad his team, the Steelers, turned their back on HIM.  Based on your criteria, you wouldn't hire Dez Bryant either or any number of other top-notch players.  It's up to a good coach to make the team cohesive and keep players in-line.  Are you saying Pagano couldn't of handled him?  Then that's a sad statement of Pagano's abilities.

2. Who said it was Blount who bought the weed?  Bell was the only one arrested during that  - not Blount.  Blount was detained but never arrested.  And I doubt that was Bell's first time ever smoking weed.  Like I said, almost half of the league smokes dope.  Get over it!  If you exclude players because of weed, you won't have enough for a team.

3. It's a business.  Players get traded for other players and draft picks (a la TRich) and players go where the money is as free agents.  There are no red flags here.

4. Once again, name one person who WANTED him gone prior to Monday night.  There were reports but there was no a single player who said they wanted him gone prior to Monday night.  In fact, even afterwards, many players said they considered him a friend.  Mike Mitchell didn't want him gone.  Pouncey never said he wanted him gone, he said it may be a blessing in disguise (meaning he thinks it's a loss but it may be for the best).  Nobody said anything before the Monday night issue.  In fact, Le'Veon Bell got into a fight with another teammate in training camp and Blount tried to break it up.  So Bell's a selfish child and should be waived too?  Your arguments are ignorant.

5. TRich is may be a big, lumbering back, but he's ineffective.  Blount is an effective runner - he was in TB, NE, and Pittsburgh.

6.  The argument that he has to learn the system is IGNORANT.  He's a running back.  He's handed the ball and he runs.  He knew the system in TB, NE, and Pittsburgh.  It's not like Indy is doing something unique that is unlike any of those systems.  He can quickly learn the system.  Let's look some facts.  Here is some history of RBs moving to a new team midseason and playing the week they were traded:

Eric Dickerson - traded from Los Angeles Rams to the Colts midseason in 1987.  Dickerson was playing the same week he was traded and he was just as effective as the week before.  His numbers did not change from prior to the trade to after the trade even though it was midseason.  He had no camp to learn the Indy system - he was plugged right in.

Hersel Walker  - traded from the Cowboys to the Vikings in 1989.  He played the same week he was traded and in fact, his numbers were even better the week he was traded than the week before he was traded.  Running backs are handed the ball and they find the hole, or they are told to block for the QB, or they are the check down receiver.  Pretty simple stuff.

To say they he would have to learn a whole new system is senseless.  He's not a wide receiver who has a set route to run.  Your argument holds no water.

7.  Another ignorant statement.  You want a player with NFL experience over one with no playing experience.  Once again, simple stuff.

Not a single thing you have said is a red flag.  The Colts need a good running back and we let our best shot at one get away to those a-wipe Patriots.
