Who is your MOP (Most Overrated Player) in the League?

ArmchairQB

This may be an old topic but just wanted to get everyone’s thoughts on who they see as being grossly overrated and more a product of some hype machine by the media or the NFL?

I’ve been thinking this already but this evening confirmed for me Jalen Hurts is grossly overrated IMHO.

And we used the #4 pick in the draft to emulate Hurts and that model.  We'll see how that turns out.

Jalen Hurts lost Steichen, a bigger loss we are realizing. Ballard did a double dip into the Eagles' OC  department, so far has been good. The difference between Reich's and Steichen's first year - world apart in difference between having Andrew Luck and Gardner Minshew. Finished 10-6 in Reich's first year with Luck. If Steichen finishes 11-6, he would already be on a great track and we don't have to worry about losing him to another team as an OC since he is also the HC. I like the arrangement long term.

Justin Herbert. 4 seasons now and highest paid QB in the league, never has won a playoff game. He is a good QB, but many say he is great. That defines overrated when most say a player is great and he isn't. Andrew Luck had 3 playoff wins in his 1st 3 seasons and won 11 games in those years with no run game and an average head coach. He was great.

I'm gonna disagree with ya there chief, but I respect and understand your position.

I just view Herbert with having a similar situation that Manning had in his first years: the wrong coach. The Jags had no business winning that playoff game last year, and Staley with his "genius defensive mind" somehow couldn't stop them once in the second half after picking off Lawrence 4 times.

I chose Lawrence as the most overrated because when it comes to big games he craters. He had many chances against the Ravens to score, and made mistake after mistake. As the #1 overall, the expectations are much higher.

I will admit, Staley was a bad coach but great QB's can overcome bad coaching to at least be relevant every season. Peyton didn't win a playoff game until season 5 but he also had a 13-3 season where we won the division in season 2 so we had an idea that Peyton was great. Herbert is a lovable guy so almost everyone makes excuses for him. You have to remember good and great are pretty big differences. I think Herbert is good but when a lot of people say he is great, they have nothing to base it on.

If the Jags choke and Lawrence doesn't deliver a Division Title this season, then you have a point. If the Jags win their last 3 games and win the division, I would say in 3 seasons Lawrence has been pretty successful with a back-to-back Division Title and he has a playoff win. In his 1st season he had perhaps one of the worst NFL coaches of all-time. He was worse than Staley.

I just don't see Lawrence doing the things that a #1 overall pick in his 3rd season should be doing. He's still not making his reads correctly which is odd. There were several times that he had his WRs in favorable matchups and he just didn't see it.

I agree to a point. I get where you are going with it as well because he went #1. When you compare him to Andrew Luck and Joe Burrow, he hasn't cut the mustard. So, I get it.

And I should state, I don't hate the kid or think he's bad. I think he's a good to great QB who is still figuring things out.

But I do think he's been overhyped way too much, quite similar to Luck in that regard.

He'll have a long (and for us: annoying) career in the league and will win a lot of games. If he gets the Jags to the promised land at some point, I can't lie I'd be happy for the Jacksonville fans.

I think Lawrence is good, not great. Same for Herbert who got drafted 6th. Josh Allen is better than both IMO and he plays reckless sometimes. If I had to choose between Lawrence, Herbert, or Allen, I would take Allen.

Great topic!

I was going to start a topic about his only facial expression throughout the game:grumpy2:

It’s hard to act cool when it’s cold…like  his offense:grumpy2: and losing your grip on a return trip to the SB:lombardi:…turnovers suck, huh?

I choose Jalen as the MOP!

This is fun:rock:

Don't see a ton of charger games but Herbert is a Top 5 QB. No QB will have much success in playoffs with the Chargers.....there are reasons Eli refused to go there.

There are numerous over rated players but Kelce, to me doesn't wow me on the eye test, and neither does his pretend girlfriend. :funny:  He's a big man that can move and can catch the football like some other TEs. It doesn't take much to find a open spot in the zone or in the flats. He's good but I think there are numerous other TEs that can also put up big stats if they played with MaHolmes and Reid.

I would say Herbert is Top 10. Top 5 is another way of over rating him. I am not a Herbert hater but nobody blames him for anything and they just say he is great. I can list 5 QBs that are better than Herbert easily:

Mahomes, Burrow, Allen, Jackson, Purdy, Hurts. That is 6. Herbert is like Dak Prescott Imo, good but not great. He puts up great numbers at times but against the very good or great teams, he usually puts up average numbers and the Chargers lose. Just like the Cowboys on the road, they can't beat anyone good and Dak folds.

Burrow cannot be loving the success his backup is having.  Making him look like a system QB.  Jackson is dynamic but I think he gets a lot of undeserved hype because he is so exciting to watch.  His actual QB skills are just meh.  Lamar is one ACL away from being pedestrian.

Burrow came within 3 points of winning a SB, and he beat mahomes in KC in an AFC Championship. Jackson has won an MVP and has his team with the #1 seed in the AFC this season. Herbert is not better than either. It is not even debatable. Browning has had 1 great game at Jacks, 1 good game vs Indy, and 1 great Qtr last week. Minshew has accomplished more than Browning.

Your not taking account of the team/organization he plays for. The Football Gods don't like the Chargers.. Why do you think Eli didn't go there? Same reason Elway refused coming to the colts.

You like Phillip Rivers??

I think you say he's a HOF'er...... How many super bowls and Championship games he won and he also had talented rosters.

What about Dan Fouts?? Even with a great offensive mind coach like Coryell and the best weapons in the league how did he do come playoff time??? And they even had Drew Breese foe a while.

As you perfectly know there's more to football than talent, X's & O's and when it comes down to it, the Chargers will fail.

Herbert is a very good passer but he can't buck the 'trend' of 4 to 5 Decades of the Chargers chargin, as their fans sadly describe them.

Don't take my word OR 50 years of history, go and listen to their podcast/fans. Or just replay the second half of the playoff game last year against the Jags and what Bosa said.

Burrow is big time and no QB in the league is going to make him look like a system QB. College champion and NFL super bowl with a organization that was pathetic for decades. He may be the best of the elite few(Maholmes, Allen, Herbert). I like Jackson but if I need a QB to pass me to victory late in the game I would take the above 4 QBs over Jackson.

Rivers had a long great career. He never won a SB, but he won several playoff games (beat Peyton in the playoffs). He also made an AFC title game. Fouts just like Rivers IMO. Fouts actually made 2 AFC title games. I think you like many are missing my point about Herbert. When it comes to Herbert, give me 1 thing that stands out? Name 1 big game he has won in the playoffs? You can't. One could say he has great talent but so do many QBs.

See I hate these kinds of threads because now it looks like I hate Herbert. I  don't, I think he is a top 10 QB but many think the guy can do wrong. Dak gets blamed for everything and he and Herbert are on the same level.

Deshaun Watson, HUGE contract and a lot of hype but has never lead his squad to anything of significance.

Lol he is the most HATED player in the league.  Almost no one likes him and if you go on reddit you can find a ton of threads talking about how bad he was this year

Hes not over rated if no one likes him or thinks hes good.  Only the biggest Browns homers in the world are still supporting him

I'm not a fan boy of Herbert.... But I do see a very talented passer. But my point is, which  some don't understand is the Chargers are not a team to succeed and win big games with on a consistent basis....and its been happening for the most part for decades.

As far as Dak is concerned I think he's pretty good too but since Jerry Jones stopped sharing all his revenue with other owners, he's not so popular with the league and their playoff success has been limited despite very talented teams on both sides of the ball. Romo was good too and I'm not sure he ever won a playoff game, not many if he did.

Unfortunately, like I said in a above post, its more than talent, Xs & Os and I think that's so sad for sports.

One great thing about Peyton, he bucked the trend of habitual losing by the colts and along with polian turned the colts into the winningest team in a Decade. A few more Super Bowls should have happened but still he did what other hot shot QBs didn't and won't.

When it comes to QBs, I am not a hater of any of them. I just analyze how they play, what they have accomplished and rank him. Do I root for guys like Levis, Stroud, or Lawrence for example, NO, they are in our division, but it doesn't mean I hate them. If they play good or great, I will say so, if they play bad in a game, I will say so. If Minshew lays an egg, I will say so, when he plays good I at least acknowledge it though.

When it comes to Herbert. He has great talent, puts up great numbers at times, but as any fan would want, they want to see wins. You can have a QB that throws for 5000 yards and 40 TDs but what good does it do if you can't even make the playoffs? Vikings fans constantly complain about Kirk because he has only won 1 big game in his entire career (Saints in the 2019 playoffs). He puts up Star Wars numbers at times.

All that matters is, if you win or lose. I have been saying that in my 9 years here. The game thread posts prove me right. If we lose, we get bashed or people are disappointed, when we win, everyone is happy.

I didn’t say Herbert was better.  Only that the longer Browning has success the worse it reflects on how much is Burrow and how much is the team around him.  Also,  Cam Newton won an MVP too.  I don’t think Lamar is bad,  but I think he gets a lot of underserved hype because he is so dynamic.  Him winning an MVP does nothing to hurt that argument.

Also whoever argued Burrow is great partially because of his CFB Championship that’s a non-starter.

Anyway I already said Hurts is my MOP.  Not Burrow or Jackson.

The difference between Burrow and Browning will be seen in Playoffs, which is why every team needs a great franchise QB. To move on closer to Super Bowl and if everything goes fine, win it all.

If Browning does any of that, he'll become next Brock Purdy but until then Bengals with Browning is exactly same as Bengals with Andy Dalton.

They both will need a Joe Burrow!

Just like how Colts need a franchise QB, or Vikings or any team for that matter.

Yep. As well as Minshew has played, I don't give us much of a chance of making the SB or winning it all. Minshew is good enough to get us to the playoffs (make things exciting) but normally to win it all, you need a franchise QB. = Mahomes, Burrow, Allen, Hurts, Jackson, and you almost have to say Purdy is one at this point. Purdy still has a small size to judge on, but he looks like a franchise QB to me the way he has played this season.

Unless you have a generational defense you need elite qb play in the playoffs.

Our defense is good but not great. We give up too many long plays. Assuming we make the playoffs, our Achilles Heel will be our Secondary. Minshew could win a SB if he had a defense like the 2000 Ravens because Dilfer did. He would even have a chance with the 2002 Bucs - Brad Johnson was average.
