Draft Day Scenarios

Recommended Posts

1) Browns take Barkley at 1 if.... Denver acquires Cousins in FA, knowing they could grab Allen at 4

2) Browns take Josh Allen at 1 if.... Denver cannot acquire Cousins, believing Broncos may trade up ahead of 4 to take Allen

If Browns take Barkley at 1 then the Giants will trade the #2 pick to either the Jets or Broncos(most likely the Jets)

3) Jets take Rosen at #2 overall, Giants move back to #6. *My thinking in this scenario is that the Giants, although QB "future needy" is content with Eli for another year or 2, so trading back gets them a chance to grab Fitpatrick to replace Apple or a lineman such as Williams, Mcglinchey or Nelson

3a) Broncos take Rosen at #2 overall, Giants move back to #5. *My thinking in this scenario is that the Giants, although QB "future needy" is content with Eli for another year or 2, so trading back gets them a chance to grab Fitpatrick to replace Apple or a lineman such as Williams, Mcglinchey or Nelson

If Browns take Allen at 1 then the Giants will trade the #2 overall pick to either the Jets, Broncos or Niners. *My thinking here is same as above regarding the QB, however most would expect Giants, who need an RB too would take Barkley. I don't have Giants taking barkley only because I believe they will sign Hyde or Ingram in FA. The niners come into play here as they would definitely want Barkley so could make a move up to second overall if they believe the Colts could want Barkley at 3, Giants would drop to 9, miss out on Fitzpatrick but still be able to grab BPA lineman left at 9

The Colts trade pick at 3 only if Barkley and Rosen is off the board and Allen is still there or they really do not want Barkley, in which case they could swap with Browns if Browns want Barkley or Allen(Browns fearing Jets or broncos would move up in trade with Colts) or with niners if the price is right. Not sure I believe they would drop to 9 unless they believe Williams, mcGlinchey or Nelson would still be there

4) If Colts stay put and Barkley is there, Colts may take Barkley as BPA, not necessarily a huge need

5) If Colts stay put and Barkley is gone, Colts take Nelson which by their board may be BPA and is a HUGE need.

In any circumstance I do not see the Colts taking Chubb at 3 or 4 if they swapped with Browns based on Browns wanting Barkley

**Wildcard... Colts may swap with niners if barkley is still there only if the trade involved picks and potentially Armstead in the deal at which point Colts get pass rusher who niners have been soured on and BPA O-line left at 9 (this scenario I highly doubt though)

In any event should be interesting night

Also after thinking about this, I could see the Browns trading from 4 up to 2 with giants after taking Allen at 1 to get Barkley.

My thinking is IF Giants want Rosen and knowing Colts not looking for a QB, Giants trade back to 4 and could still get Rosen.

This is where it gets interesting for the Colts because if Giants think Jets or Broncos would trade with Colts to get Rosen and/or Donald then Giants may try to trade with Colts to swap 3 for 4.

Wouldn't it be cool if 1 of these 2 next scenarios happened in that event.

1) Giants trade with Colts by swapping 3 for 4, giving Colts additional draft picks and potentially Eli Apple in the deal. Apple has worn out his welcome in NY and is still on manageable contract and Indy needs CB

Or.. And I know this is super far fetched and probably would never happen, but what if...

2) Giants trade with Colts by swapping 3 for 4, giving Colts additional picks, Colts send TY to NY and Giants send Beckham to Indy. My thinking id TY still has 3 years on current deal which giants could manage, all guaranteed money has been paid and Beckham wants a NEW contract currently which the Giants may not be able to afford but the Colts surely could.

That, even though highly improbable, would be AWESOME!!

Ha!!... It's gonna be fun

Look there are plenty of QB needy teams who can jump in there and trade for the Colts pick.  Plus the Giants could also go for a trade down if they decide to keep Eli.

If the new Brown's GM is smart I don't think he messes around and grabs a QB right away.  Now if he really covets Barkley too then he could make a trade with the Colts to give up a couple mid round picks and jump up one spot from 4 to make sure he gets him.  It looks like Cleveland has Philly's 2nd round pick this year, which will be late in the 2nd round, so they could theoretically package that in with a late round pick to jump up one spot and grab Barkley.

No way that would happen.

1. Luck has questions about his health.  It's doubtful Cleveland would give up the top half of 2 drafts for a QB with possible shoulder problems.

2. All of that is predicated on Kirk Cousins signing here.  The problem is that you don't want to trade away your QB before you have Cousins inked, otherwise he could get a better offer someplace else and ruin everything.  But Cousins isn't going to ink here until Luck is traded.

3. That move would cost us 19.2 M in dead money and would severely hamper our salary cap.

4. You have to consider fan issues here.  Fans don't like to see their franchise QB traded away.  You quite simply can't take a guy like Andrew Luck and trade him away without the fans getting upset.

No thanks on Bryant.  He has been terrible this year.

Also, its unlikely all those teams will trade up 1 or 2 places with the Colts when they know we don't need a QB.  More likely to try and get a kings ransom from one for our 3rd and do it in one.

@ColtsFan1981 Wow, firstly there was a lot of thought and consideration gone into those posts and so thanks for the effort, interesting reading.  Not picking holes in your post, just a few things to mention:

I really don't see any way we trade Luck.  I for one would be devastated, but the logistics of trading that contract (even to the Browns) is a huge issue.

I can't see any way that both Barkley and Chubb are still on the table at #5 and #6.  Even with QB needy teams, those guys appears too hot to pass if you get to #3 and #4.  That can change though.

I think you are underselling Brissett at a trade for #78.  I would be looking for a high second round pick I think.  He has his faults but is only just finishing his 2nd year as a pro.

The one thing I am fully on board with is Robinson from the Jags.  Him and TY could be deadly with Luck back.

Tell me what you think of this scenario...what parts work, what parts don’t, and what would you do different...

1. Trade Andrew Luck to the Cleveland Browns for picks 1, 4, 33, 35 in 2018; and 1st and 2nd round picks in 2019.

We just won't get that much for Luck given how much time he has missed in 2015-2017.  We do'nt even know if he'll come back in 2018 healthy.  The prospect of it isn't dismal, but even if he does come back, we don't know how effective he will be.  No team would give up that kind of collateral on a hunch without knowing his medical status.

And I thought I spent too much time on these boards.....wow!! All that is missing is a power point presentation. Some of you guys should ask for a sit down with Irsay because its clear Ballard has no clue what is going on passing on these opportunities.

If the Colts re-sign Mewhort and snag a guard in FA, I could see them drafting Connor Williams to play RT as a rookie, especially with Anthony's contract expiring at the end of next season. They could eventually move Connor over to LT if needed, but Nelson is also a beast. I would love to have either one of them.

#1, 2 and 3 will be Donald, Rosen and Allen in any order, which ,means we trade down. I can see us trading down to 4 with the browns in exchange for their #3 so it would allow them to take Barkley and get one of the three. I can also see us trading down with the Jets or Redskins, Bronco's and pick up another high #2 pick and maybe next years #1. We have too many needs to stay at 3 if the QB's are in swing. Besides, we could trade down with the Jets, get their #2 and #4 this year and maybe a #2 next year and get Chubb. That high #2 with our own #2 means 2 more impact players.

Personally I think the draft will go much different than anticipated.  The Browns new GM is familiar with Alex Smith, and rumors are he might be on another team next year.  He goes to Cleveland who need experience over yet another rookie.  This then allows them to trade back with someone like the Jets or whoever that wants someone specific and worry about the Giants or another team moving up for them.  This then makes our pick far less valuable unless another team gets spooked and might want to safely grab the 3rd QB (assuming Giants draft a QB).  I am a believer the Broncos will not budge and the Jets might be the only team willing to make a jump.  I hope I am wrong though and we have the ability to move back a little.

Don't forget about the Bills.  Smith is also being mentioned as a target for them and they have two first rd. picks this year back to back like 21& 22 or something like that.  I think Smith will have more than one suitor.

I can see the Browns keeping their 1st pick and taking Barkley, cause they know we don't need a qb. So with only 2 teams between their first 2 picks and one not taking a qb, they can still get one of the top qb prospects in this draft. And if they are a little bit unsure if they would get their desired qb at 4, cause we could trade down with the jets or broncos, they offer us the 33 ovrl pick and a 3rd or 4th rounder to swap picks with us.

The Browns would have 2 high quality starters and we 2 more high picks.

I don't disagree but the Browns have two first round picks as well that are way more appealing.  Also, the have Dorsey at GM who is very familiar with Smith.  I will say though there will be a lot of interest imo.  QB's might be available this year and some are decent talents as well.

    • Yeah, Ebukam almost looks clumsy next to Latu. He's just so fluid.
    • Did Hou actually get that much better? This really does remain to be seen. I am of the opinion that the signing of Diggs is a signing that has been made about 2 years too late. He won't be bad, but he isn't a top 10 WR in the NFL anymore. I wouldn't put him as any more dangerous that Pittman, so WR's are a push. We have the better RB, Mixon is great and all, but he is not JT. We have the better Oline, and it isn't even close. TE's are a push, we have a lot of upside, but until it is realised im very "meh" on our TEs. QB - I would argue that Stroud is probably more likely to regress to the mean in year 2 vs improve. That rookie season of his was a bit silly, and they had an easier schedule last season too. If he really does build on last year and get even better, then our entire discourse here is probably irrelevant as we will have another Mahomes level QB on our hands to deal with in the AFC and within the AFC South no less. So unless Richardson is also a Mahomes level talent in that scenario, we are done for anyways. To me, our success in this coming season comes down to 2 groups on this entire team. 1. The QB (because... duh) 2. Our DBs. If we even get average play from the DBs, I think this team has the ability to win the whole damned thing (supposing Richardson stays healthy and is what we all hope he is). I would also argue that Houston are paper thin. If they lose a OL starter, Mixon or even one of their starting WRs.... they have a very big drop off. And injuries happen in the NFL. Just sayin...
    • If he wasn’t fast enough or athletic enough anymore for linebacker, then he’s not going to be able to cut it at Safety where speed , quickness, athleticism are even more important.    Wish it wasn’t so….
    • could he be another bob sanders at that position?
    • Man I love me some Maniac, but it won't happen, and he's too slow after his surgeries.
